Safiri watches quietly as her mother's companion settles in with them, wriggling his lengthy body as he makes himself comfortable against her black marked legs, green eyes watching the polecat curiously. Marembo was not unfamiliar to her, but she could never quite form an opinion on the creature, unable to decide whether she enjoyed the little animal or felt indifferent; he was something she couldn't place a finger on, the way she couldn't place a finger on her feelings towards her busy father either. Tembovu certainly cared and loved her, but she could not figure out how she felt, petite heart yearning to remember the last time she had spent more than a fleeting moment with him. It seems that he never had enough time to love her, to give the paternal affection she so readily craved, greedy and eager to get attention from the Elephant King. At some point, she may request her mother seeks out the King so she can spend more than just a moment with him; maybe he can teach her some words from his home, as her young mind has yet to take in more than just the simple things.

Her mother's story begins, telling tales of towering ivory buildings where the whole world could be seen from the top, enticing the princess as she weaves a wonderful image of the world she once lived in. Safiri is thrilled to listen, ears perked and weight pushed forward as she takes in all that she can, a dry sponge finally soaking up droplets of blessed water. She speaks of war, of a divide between species, of impossibilities and unicorns without magic, leaving the lamb in absolute awe. There were a million questions, but none would come out quite yet, glittering green still focused on her mother's face as she swallows thickly and finally offers something.

"You had buildings? Were they really so big that you could see above mountains and down upon rivers and sunsets? Are there buildings like that here? Why did you make equines do your work? Did they want to help? Or did they do something bad, so you were punishing them? Why were you fighting against the pegasi? What had you done, or what did they do, to wage war? And why was there no magic? Is there magic here? Do I have magic?" They're flooding out of her, pink splashed lips letting loose a flurry as her mind whirls to understand, curious to know. And the war? It confuses her the most, for why must they fight? Safiri has never seen a pegasus, nor an equine, but she imagines they're all very similar, and that there is no reason to discriminate. But children to not understand the affairs of adults, do not understand the complexity carried in relationships between adults, and the matters that they tend to. It escapes her mind, and she's left with a head full of a million questions, hoping her mother could answer at least one of the hundreds.
