Cantering and trotting alongside daddy and Duir, the autumn forest seems to go on forever. While the Basin seemed big, and she had yet to explore anything at all like all of it, the vastness of the world beyond was as overwhelming as it was interesting, and with each stretch of the road they passed, the more and more Gwyn believed she wanted to see.

So, when her father’s nose touches her upon the shoulder and bids her to stop, she does so quite reluctantly, at least until she hears the same voices that made him pause to begin with. Her own ears lift forward and her tiny nub of a horn glints in the dim light of the dreary Sun making its way through the boughs of the trees as she lifts her head, too. She cannot see them, but soon enough, she is following her daddy with eager steps, blissfully unaware of danger, and anticipating only friendship, or fun.

What she finds is a stallion with a rich, golden yellow coat, with creamy hair, and dark markings; he, too, has a deer friend, but he doesn’t have plants in his antlers, like Duir does, and is instead smoky, and mysterious. She wonders if that means the stallion is, too, but doesn’t think about it long, because the woman with him is so pretty.

She makes Gwyn think of sunrise, which is one of her favorite times of the day, and becomes the immediate focus for the filly, who barely hears her father introduce her.

“Hello,” she sweetly says. Smiling belatedly and looking around at the strangers with deep nods of greeting, she’s otherwise silent, mostly wondering what sort of stories these tall strangers know about her family.

but you cry like a sheep
