Well, duh, it’s hatching, she wanted to say to herself. Just because an egg is broken doesn’t mean it’s wrecked. Besides, Akeli really doesn’t know much about eggs at all. She settles back, trying to contain herself. But then the girls, who she can know assume are sisters, begin talking about dragons. “Your mom has a dragon?” Her golden eyes are wide, and she turns them back to the egg, hoping that this was a dragon too, because she had never seen a dragon before.
But the first girl still stands frozen, and as the sparkling shards fall from the prize, the hybrid girl tips her head to the side, nostrils flared as she tried to take in the scent. It smells like a lightening strike, and though she had never seen anything exactly like it, it certainly didn’t look like what she had always imagined a dragon to be. She doesn’t notice how the girl’s spirit was suddenly shared, soul bound to another’s, heart ebbing and flowing to capture the companion’s beat. It was something beautiful and perfect, but Akeli can’t possibly fathom the true magnitude of the experience. Perhaps some day she will know the same joy, the same love and kinship as this, but for now she smiles and looks at the new bonded. “It’s cute, in a weird kinda way. Maybe you could try to keep it warm? It’s chilly out here, plus it’s all wet.” She takes a small step back, giving the new baby thing some space for its first few breaths.
She nudges the equine girl with her wing, hoping the other girl is sharing in the excitement. “This is so exciting!” She trills, too happy for her new friend to feel even the smallest amount of jealousy.
