The white stones… shivered. The small pale gold’s face brightens to see them dance, his small tuff of a tail wiggling. Higher. Higher.
A flash of gold in the night and loose dirt scatters in his sight. The babe squeals, letting fear rush into him, his heart leaping awake and blue eyes shutting out the fright. Long lanky limbs scatter and kick away. He cowers, but not necessarily from the fears lurking outside. Within he feels his heart accelerate, beating faster – faster. Like it did last time. Faster. Like it did last time. FASTER. His own terror of the coming worsened his fate. FASTER. Pounding in his ears. FAST-
’Galahad’ The moment suspends. He knows that voice. Nose, so new to the strange scents of this new world, finds one it knows. Fast The babe, cradled in his feeble tuck, forces one eye open to the world, and it sees gold. Slower. The still new eyes adjust to the light, even in the night they beat back against the starlight and air. But there is gold. There is Da. But Da hadn't stopped it last time either. Fast. The child whimpers, letting his head fall low. In relief or guilt he can’t tell, but a weight still presses him.
Words, still so strange lull out to him, and though tense and worried they may sound to some, to the small colt, they were as soothing as a caress on his neck. Though answering was harder than it sounded. “N-no…” Stuttering from newness and the still lingering fear. “No sleep.” The young colt looked to the larger stallion, to his Da, and even his new face could not hide the lines of weariness and the already too heavy weight of his small world. Already so tired of being scared.
