A warm breath rolls over the small colt sending a shiver down his spine, and he leans into the gentle touch. He hadn’t realized how cold he was. It slows his rolling fears. It is hard to be scared when you were warm and with the ones you loved. Yet, his eyes still looked out into the world, and still saw the dark unknown shapes which might also now leap out at him. The pale colt still did not uncurl from this small ball of baby fluff, not even raising his head but his sea blue eyes, crossed with white, look back up to the gold.
Why? The colt’s frown deepened. Why could he not sleep? He thought he hadn’t understood how, but then watching Mama…it seemed like he did it right. So why couldn’t he sleep? It was a simple question, with an obvious answer, but in the mind of child still so young it came out garbled. So it was the colt opened his mouth, but only a whimper came out.
He squirms again, shifting his small body in its still lanky leg wrapped ball. He feels the need to reply, to name it, to find an answer. His mind wanders off, tying together strings that didn’t really go together but that made sense to him. Got him some kind of answer…The pale head tucks close, looking from his Da’s steady gaze. “Bur-“ He shifts again, trying to call it what they had. “Bu-“But the words wouldn’t come, and he drops his gaze in defeat. “F-fire.” He finally wobbles out. Perhaps he’d taken an around about logic to get there, but wasn’t too far from the truth he was still blind to. Children are not born knowing what nightmares are.
