Even this far south, winter still maintained a nagging hold. It had set in fast and early this year, and Aryel was beginning to wonder if that was normal for this land. She had already seen the Threshold, and had briefly crossed Thistle Meadow to take shelter from a heavy snow, and now found herself in a desert-like region, although last time she checked, deserts didn't have a nip in the air.

She stood at the shore of a large lake, sipping the cool water. At least it wasn't frozen solid. And the plant life was still green here as well, although she wasn't sure what to make of the strange trees and squat, spine-covered plants.

Aryel had noticed the signs of equine habitation as her instinct to be in a group began to kick in. Being a nomad was all well and good, but there was safety in numbers. The pegasus mare was ready to join a herd, so long as she could still explore the rest of Helovia.

A cool breeze moved gently underneath the brutes wings. Flying over the throat was his favorite thing to do. Flapping his large Pegasus wings, he let a shrill out as he flew towards the sand mounds. Closing his eyes for a moment and glided around the sky enjoying his flight. Then out of nowhere he swooped down a full speed he raced towards the dunes, then gently glided close the ground. His moment was almost perfect, but then he spotted something. “A mare?” he thought. “A Pegasus mare?” The thought raced through his mind. The brute was stunned by her, as she looked so graceful exploring the grounds. Circling around her he watched as she quietly looked around. Not paying attention to his surroundings, he turned his head just as he was about to crash into a big sand mound. Letting out a shriek he crashed into the mound, rolling down the hill and landing on his side. He was shocked. He had never in all of his life lost control of his flying. Especially because of another Pegasus. “What was I thinking?” He thought. “I never look at other mares, or pegs.. Why, did I look at her?” The question raced through his thoughts as he just laid in place, not knowing if he should move or wait.

A distant call caused Aryel to look up curiously, ears swiveling to catch the sound again. She sniffed the air, but the wind was taking Levi's scent away from her. Must be my imagination. She returned to her drink just a something swooped in the corner of her eye. Now she was sure there was something coming closer. Her head whipped around just as something collided with a nearby sand dune.

Aryel stood uncertainly for a moment, waiting for the dust to settle. Was she facing a friend or foe? The sand clouds dissipated to reveal a silver-colored pegasus laying on his side with a startled expression that matched her. She blinked, then began giggling, a mirthful noise that evolved into full-fledged laughter as she ambled over to the stallion. "Do Helovian pegasi always land on their sides?" she asked, unable to keep the grin off her muzzle. There was nothing malicious in her voice or expression, simply amusement.

For a moment, the stallion thought he was hearing voices in his head. He didn’t see Aryel because his wings covered his eyes. After she started to laugh and make her somewhat funny comment he whipped his wings to his sides. Quickly, he got up shaking the sand that covered his wings and body. Giving a brief sigh, he looked at her giving her a glare “That wasn’t funny.” He said with his ears pinned back and a grumpy look on his muzzle. “No, obviously I made a mistake.. I never land on my side. I have actually never crashed before… except for today.” Her smirk made him want to smile. He started to smirk a bit, but kept himself together. Then of course, there was an awkward silence. He looked into her shimmering eyes and he started to burst out laughing. Making a high shrill noise, he reared up throwing his head up and down. He knew he was being friendly, but he couldn’t help it, it was just… funny. After, he finished laughing he gave her a quick smile and then quickly stopped, coughed and said like nothing had happened “Who are you anyway. I have never seen you here before.” The brute enjoyed her company as he waited for her reply.

"Was to." snickered Aryel, trying desperately to get her mirth under control. She managed to stop laughing as he grumpily replied. "Don't feel bad about it. Everyone makes mistakes." She watched a wry grin tug at his lips before he got it under control.

A moment of quiet, and then both of them burst out laughing again, the tension lifting. She moved her head a few inches to the side to make sure his hooves didn't strike her as he reared, and kept laughing until they were both out of breath. She tilted her head as he harrumphed and asked what she was doing here. "I'm a newcomer to Helovia, actually." she said, flicking her tail. "I've been on the road for a while, and I actually came hoping to join up with the herd here. Are you with them?"

“Well, yes, but I keep my distance. I usually just do my own thing without anyone to bother me. Everyone is with everyone so I just stay apart because I am different than them.” He says calmly. The real reason he said he was “different” than them is because he just doesn't personally like most of them. He is just too full of himself to realize that they are good natured and are accepting.

The handsome brute looks at her. She had a kind look about her. She seemed naive, but in a good way. She was so innocent, something that he could never say about a horse. Trying to be nice he catches her gaze giving her a smile. He knew what he needed to do even though he dreaded the words that rolled out of his mouth. “Do you want me to show you to the herd? I mean I could, if you wanted me to, but only to get there because I just stay around by myself and just do whatever I feel like. It doesn't matter to me if you want to stay here and explore of go, but either way I probably won’t stay long.” He said with regret. He really did want to stay with her, but not with the herd. If she chose to stay with him, he guessed that maybe he would show her around and maybe help her if she needed it.

"Ah, so you're the loner type, eh?" asked Aryel, swishing her tail. For a horse that she could tell was trying to come off as cold and aloof, he wasn't doing a very good job. But he seemed to be a good sort deep down, not truly bad at all. Maybe a little arrogant, but perhaps he just needed to lighten up.

She smiled again as he asked her if she wanted him to show her to the herd, but there was something in his posture and tone that made her wonder if he really just was acting aloof or was genuinely unsocial. "I won't make you deal with the herd if you don't want to." she said. "You could just point me in their direction if you want."

(ARGH. I have no muse right now, sorry for the shortness and general crappiness. If you can't think of any good replies, I'll try to rewrite this later.)

(It's ok haha. Here I will give you a hard desicion. I'll try to make it interesting)

"I guess you could say I'm the "loner" type." He said sort of sly. "Really, it's up to you." He said with a flick of his ears. "I am usually always around here, so if you wanted to meet the herd I could fly with you there and you can do what you want from there."

The sun beat down on his pelt like a sauna. The calming, warm rays soothed his skin. Now that it was winter the air was getting cooler, so a little heat felt good. The gentle breeze blew through his fur and made a slight shimmer in his eyes. He knew that she was a gentle natured mare, but of course he had a hard time trusting any horse, even if they were extremely kind, especially if they were new. No one knew where they could have come from. He knew she was different, but just like all the other he knew she would just make friends of the herd and go off with them. He was to selfish to have friends. He hated when horses try to mess with him only because he loves to tease back and it usually ends bad… for them.
Turning his head toward hers, he looks at her. “Look, I don’t have a lot of time. I’m not the “generous” type so you better hurry.” He knew she would want to go to the herd, so he just turned and slowly took a step not facing her. If she stayed here maybe he would be nice and show her around, but probably not. He didn’t like new comers they were always so helpless and to nice.

"I'd like that, actually, if you could escort me to a herd official." said Aryel with a toss of her head. She studied the stallion again, trying to see through his mask of indifference. She had always been the kind of horse to try and break through someone's shell.

She couldn't understand why this horse felt he had to put up a wall. He didn't have reason to be insecure about his looks. She couldn't see any scars on him that would have marked some traumatic occurred in the past. The more she talked to him, the more she found him equal parts annoying and intriguing.

She privately decided that if she was to run into him again, she would try and get him to open up a little. "I won't take up any more of your time, so perhaps we should go ahead and start looking for the rest of the Throat herd." The words seemed snappish, and yet they were spoken with no ill intent. She walked past the male, glancing over her shoulder. "Shall we walk and talk?" She blinked, stopping as she thought of something. "Huh. I just realized I haven't even told you my name. I'm Aryel, pleased to meet you. How about you? Got a name?"

The brute snorted with shame. He really didn’t want to go, but whatever there was nothing better to do. Walking beside her, he kept his head high as they traveled across the cool sands. She was talking to him, but he wasn’t really listening. He was just worrying about the herd, not her. When she asked if they could walk and talk kind of louder than he had expected, he gave her a look. “Well, then.” He said more jokingly.

As she said her name, it quite fitted her. Aryel. It was a very pretty name. The stallion looked forward for a while, not saying a word. But, finally he stopped ignoring her and started to talk. “Yeah, yeah, pleased to meet you to.” He said more annoyed. “I’m Levi.” He said proudly and arrogantly.

Levi walked beside her for a while. He never really “walked” to the Dragon’s Throat herd, he mainly just flew. It was much easier that way. Why didn’t they fly? The question raced through his mind a bit. The mare seemed to be excited about what he was talking about. It was nothing that special. He was just talking about his name and stuff that didn’t really matter. Finally after a long time he said “We’re half way there, Aryel.” In a tired tone.

(Sorry for the six-day wait!)

Aryel resisted the urge to roll her eyes as the male proudly announced himself. He seemed to be a decent sort, but she was beginning to hope that the entire herd wasn't like that. Being proud of yourself was fine and dandy, but he was just aloof. How could someone live like that? It certainly must make it difficult to find friends in a herd.

"Levi." she said. "I like that name." The rest of the trip passed in a comfortable silence. Comfortable at least for her, as she was mostly just paying attention to the scenery, memorizing various landmarks and areas she knew would be good for food, water, or shelter. She figured dust storms could roll up in a place that this and had no desire to be caught up in one.

Her ears went up again as Levi announced that they were getting close to the herd lands. "Good. Perhaps we should fly the rest of the way." She had been enjoying giving her wings a rest, but it would be faster in the air. She broke into a gallop, unfurling her midnight-blue wings as she did so. Three powerful strokes sent up puffs of sand and succeeded in getting her airborne. She circled until Levi was in the air as well, then banked, legs still moving as if she was galloping in midair. From this vantage point, she realized, it would also be easier to find the herd.

(It's ok lol its no problem)

Looking towards Aryel's face, he smiled at her slightly and said "Thank you, I like your name to." He said somewhat nice. "Your name fits you." Walking around the sands was his favorite things to do, other than flying around them at night. That was his absolute favorite.

As she asked him if they could fly together, he was happy she did ask. He was getting tired and he really loved flying more than anything. "Yes, we can fly." He said briefly. As she was already up in the sky, he could tell she was eager also to fly. Smirking at her, he ran as fast as he could down the sands, then opening his large wings, they lifted him up into a perfect glide. He circled around her and whined loud.

He loved the scenery as well. Looking towards her he said “I bet I could beat you there.” He looked at her and without any warning he took off into the distance.

A smirk cut Aryel's features as Levi boasted he could outfly her. "Not likely, featherhead." she challenged with a laugh. "But I'll take you up on it. Ready...setgo!!" With that, she gave a powerful downstroke and surged upwards, instinctively feeling for the ripples of air currents on her primary feathers. A warm updraft might help, or a gust. Jetstreams were way too high up. She began flapping faster, muscles working under her silver-blue coat. She wondered if Levi's strength was speed or endurance. She herself was fast, but only for short bursts.

She was gaining on Levi, but slowly. Whooping aloud with the euphoria of flight, at the moment Aryel didn't care if she won or lost. She had a new friend, and soon a new home. Life was good.

He quickly heard the swish of her wings riplling through the winds close behind him. Turning his head around he saw the smirk on her face. He could tell she was gonna be fast. His strength was more in stamina, but he could keep his full speed for a while. Today he didn't feel like going to fast, but to just keep up with Aryel and then try to blow by her in the end.

His large silvery blue wings flapped gently through the breeze. Aryel by now past him. He wasn't far off her tail, but he knew she could probably win if she wanted to. Seeing below him that Kri had called a meeting, he looked at her saying "We are here, Aryel. That pegasus mare standing before all of our herd is Kri. Kri is our wonderful leader. She will help you with anything you could possibly need."

Slowly he fluttered down harshly cascading down to the ground he landed perfectly. A cloud of breath trailed out of his nostrils. His mane didn't cover his eyes, but they shone bright towards Kri. He was going to introduce her to the herd. He knew this meeting was mandatory so he stayed to listen.

Aryel grinned as she looked over her shoulder, noting Levi had fallen behind. Still, he didn't appear to be lagging very much, and Aryel wasn't about to forsake her lead. It briefly crossed her mind that he might be conserving his strength for a final burst of speed, but being the mare she was, she didn't dwell on it. She could win this, easy.

When Levi drew her attention to the ground. she looked down. Several pegasi had gathered, all looking towards a single mare. So that's Kri?, she thought. She couldn't see much from this height, but from the way the other pegasi were paying strict attention left no doubt she was a capable leader. Unfortunately, this distraction served to slow her slightly, allowing Levi to take the lead, touching the ground gently. "Hey!" whinnied Aryel, folding her wings slightly and diving, hitting the ground in a run. She trotted to a stop, then rejoined Levi. "Hmph. Seems I was mistaken." she said, looking away, but she couldn't keep the grin off her face. "That was fun." she said, looking back at Levi. "You and I will have to meet up again sometime."

Levi smirked at her and said "Yeah, it was fun, but I think you could have beat me if you tried." He said chuckling. Smiling at her quickly turned to a frown. Giving her one last look, he slowly turned around and started to walk away. He promised he would take her here and then she would have to learn for herself. Then he heard the ringing sound of her voice as she said she wanted to meet up again with him. Her saying was clear. She thought of him as a friend. The way she said it he could just tell.

His eyes started to glow as he said "Sure." Then he thought of something they could do. "You know, I haven't showed you the best part about the Dragon's Throat have I?" He smiled at her and then said "Meet me back at the duns later tonight if you would like to meet up again." With that he turned around and in a flash he was out of sight.

(If you want to keep them a little longer just so he can show her the rest of helovia then thats fine, but yes I agree this thread is coming to an end so after this one either you or me could make a new thread. It can be a whole new subject if you would like and we can stay here or go to a different region we are welcome in. So it doesn't matter to me haha.)
