Pity for the rabbit and relief came at the ending of a life. One soul departs and another would descend; he knew that eventually all returned to the heavens and earth. Grasping the now limp body between flattened premolars and lips, Midas stifled a recoil of renewed disgust that darkened his features and twisted a normally calm face into one of utter revulsion. Tangy copper licked along pink tongue, the musky flavor of earthy pelt was unappealing. Tightening his hold, limbs flexed and cantered body forward through the trees; back to the egg. Dropping it eagerly, Midas checked on the unhatched creature –than came back to lay a thin covering of snow over the still soft rabbit. Intent was to keep other predators at bay, while preserving raw meat with below freezing moisture. Turning in another direction he continued to hunt by heading toward the many hidden streams within the forest. Frogs, fish and lizards loved streams—though few would be out and about in this cold weather. Perhaps he would find a fish or two, or a dormant winter frog buried in loose mud. Upon approach, hooves scrapped at soft soil with hopes of digging one up. Little mounds of upturned soil and piled crawdad nests scattered the area. Even a large crawdad would be worth the effort. He could use a pointed stick to pry one out. |
