Little green shoots could be seen popping up around the landscape. The wrath of the sun god stretched far and even here the snow was fighting a hard battle. Like piercing blades, the rays of the sun struck the cold ground of the Steppe, the cold making for a hasty retreat. The diminishing snow began to part between cloven hooves that held up the tiny body of a hardy warrior, whose inky perception disagreed greatly with the Sun God's antics. An unusual vein, brimming blood red, travelled up the great obsidian horn adding a little life to a weapon that had cleaved its way through flesh great many a time. Grey fur, dappled in places, ruffled against a soft wind.

Seiren stopped walking and looked out over the view before her. The unicorn snorted at the bare blank vision of it, she was hoping to find someone... Or something. Her days of travelling round alone could be lonely ones and the little arab longed for a little company. Even her enemies would be welcome on this day, such was the way of her frosty heart. Seiren preferred to play with her prey before striking them out of their misery. However, not all had made an enemy of her. Some had even earned the respect of her, something Seiren rarely felt due to her interest in the macabre way in life.

Her goddess, the moon, felt so far away.

Coldness penetrated his flimsy summer hide, into his bones. He shivered profusely, huddled with the little bronze on a patch of slick grass. Sad snowflakes flitted down from grey skies, landing in small clumps along his smooth hide. The colt huffed with effort as he forced his frozen limbs to engage in movement. He brought them forward slowly, with minimal pain, and his bronze clambered up his neck, slender face peeking between the dark-tipped ears. He was growing steadily, now dwarfing most common dragons; his adult size would surely be massive, as any royal had right to be.

The thin trickle of snow had halted long before they reached the quicksilver mare, and from a distance, the little dun's heart almost stopped. He wanted to cry out, to sing, to do something, but as he approached the dapple grey, his throat thickened with disappointment. A mare. And the sky still leered overhead, mocking.

She boasted a deadly horn - straight as a pin, with a vein of red (not cobalt) engraved through its length. The mare stood little taller than him, but her bearing was impressive, proud; like any unicorn may have right to be. Jackal wanted to shrink back and run away, but he could not find the strength in his half-thawed muscles. Meekly, the yearling approached the unicorn, slate eyes watching her weapon warily. It had a bloodred ring around it. Stay away, it told him, be afraid, but the fool he was drew closer.

Seiren watched with interest as the yearling approached, he was red in colouring (different from her brother) with little white snowflakes. A dragon sat upon his neck, two reptilian eyes peered between auburn ears. It was a rare sight to see and Seiren turned her full attention on him. Her gaze quickly deduced that he was nervous around her, his half grown body moving against what seemed a better judgement. Taking a quick liking to the boy, the shady mare took advantage of the young soul "what a handsome boy you are! I'm Seiren, what's your name?" She smooth talked to him, her voice sweet like a song birds. Her body moved like a seductress as her hooves glided forwards, ornate arabian features on full show.

Obsidian eyes watched him carefully, her cruel mind already working the strings. The snow whipped up and she shook her head in joy at its cold bite, much more satisfying than the torment of heat. Her slow, inviting walk took her round Jackal and back to where she started. Gaining a full view of his handsome features, gaze slipping to the bronze on his neck. The grey wondered what it was like, being bonded to a dragon. Her mind troubled over how the ties would work, was it like friendship? She stopped herself from snorting at the absurd notion, if it could breathe fire and rip you to shreds wouldn't he or she be more like a bodyguard?

Seiren gave up on the pointless argument with herself and faced Jackal and Dei once more. She wondered how he'd respond. A colt so fresh in the world, an innocent prey for a bored predator.

The pretty grey unicorn watched him (and Dei) intently, a predatory spark in her eyes. He finished the gap between them, pausing at a respectful distance, ignoring the uneasiness in his stomach when she began to speak. Seiren seemed benign enough, and the colt could not help but smile amicably. "I'm Jackal, and this is Dei," he said, remembering the last time someone spoke like that to him - it was Enheduanna, the similarly beautiful, but strange filly. They both made him wary. He had not yet come of age, and would not know what these things meant.

Jackal shrugged internally.

His hooves shifted, the mushy snow freezing his frogs. She smelled of distant mist, like some mystical place where unicorns went. Although he was no stranger to these creatures (being half unicorn himself), the colt thought of the horned as a completely magical race, for they commonly were blessed with abilities, which made him shiver uncomfortably, for magic made him wary; but was the bond between dragon and equine then, if not magical? He pondered, his other pair of jade eyes watching the mare intently. Perhaps there was kinship between two magical things, one he could not hope to understand.

"Do you live on the ...Edge?" he asked quietly, slate eyes glittering prettily as they reflected the melting snow. Someone had once taught him the names of herdlands once, and Jackal had tried to commit them to memory. The World's Edge was strictly for unicorns, the Windtossed Foothills was his home, and the Dragon's Throat was for pegasi. He had been there once, and saw the Sun God, a magnificent being composed of fire and bravado. Jack wished he was more like him, and not the meek, stupid, haunted foal that he was.

Wicked. How else could you describe her? Like a hawk eyes a mouse, Seiren eyed Jackal. He seemed delightfully sad, the poor little thing. He'd just happened to run into a lioness on this day, one who sharpened her claws daily. She listened to him introduce himself, "I'm Jackal, and this is Dei." What sweetly sounded names they were given, anticipation rattled up every bone. It had been so long since she'd taken advantage of a poor soul. It was beneath her, but why not.

Her inspection wasn't as intense now as she stood and watched him shuffle in her presence. The black depths of her eyes met those of Dei, dragons were mythical. Her mother had told her stories about dragons. But the ones in those stories always seemed to sound larger and much more ferocious. This one looked like its reptilian brother, a lizard. She shrugged, such thoughts never troubled her for so long. Some say unicorns were mythical, Seiren cared little on the matter. Her horn was her weapon, not something to marvel at.

Vocals sounded out once more, the colt was quiet but she admired his observational skills. Seiren spoke through her laughter, "very good. I'm a warrior of the Edge... Are you sick boy? A strapping colt like you should be full of the joys of life! Ahh, but then life is not always so kind..." Her voice trailed off. The sentence had double meaning, almost all of Seiren's sentences had double meanings. Maybe it was a warning. The mare didn't think, she ensnared her victim and covered them with a poisonous intent.
