| Foolish; it was all foolish, and I could not but laugh bitterly to myself, exchanging glances with my brothers as we made our way through the scorched earth, the rank stench of burnt terrain stinging our nostrils, the smoke pricking tears into the corner of our eyes. All of this destruction, all of this death, for one god's temper tantrum. I found it amusing, in a dry, ashy way, that stained my tongue and stuck to the top of my mouth. Power was intoxicating, I knew, and the Sun was drunk on it, teetering on his perch of the sky, and now, rolling across the Earth, threatening to burn all in his path. It was all so foolish. The Edge looked like it may have been beautiful, once, but now the smoke hung over it in a sheet so dense that the land beneath it was scarcely visible. I stepped lightly around the fallen trees, soot smearing and disappearing into my hide, small scratches appearing under the angry touch of broken branches and brittle thorns. Beneath the pungent stench of dying embers, faint traces of life were detectable - scents of sweat, of fear, of life. Hoofprints, cloven, unicorn. Mirage told me of this place, where unicorns lived alone and others were unwelcome; I wondered how the Lord of this place might react to our trespass. Not that I was afraid. My siblings stood around me; it would take more than a few foolish unicorns to shake my confidence, or curiosity. At last they appeared before us, the line of angry unicorns throwing insults at the Sun - foolish, foolish creatures, why do you jab at the wounded beast? Why? Mirage and I were of the Moon, and our brothers too, but we had no desire to leap into the fray against a divine power without any consideration of the consequences? A snort leaves my nostrils at their childish behavior. The Lord of Sun was an impressive creature, winged and horned and dripping with fire; as we drew to a halt, I dipped my skull in some respect. Yes, I thought him a fool for his outburst of childish rage, but he was nevertheless a king of the sky. As I lifted my eyes, Mirage spoke, her strong voice ringing through the group with power and authority. It never fails to impress me, how much my little sister has grown, how strong she is now. Gaze was thrown to my brothers, knowing they shared my feelings of protectiveness for my baby sister. I let my alto voice join Mirage's calm tones, mine glittering with a lower strength than her natural grace, addressing the assembled unicorns rather than the vengeful god. "Calm yourselves," I direct, voice echoing with a quiet force, eyes glinting with fire. "Your crying falls on deaf ears; your insults are pointless. The Sun has already burnt your home; do not help him find it in his heart to make ashes of you, too." Foolish creatures, impulsive and thoughtless, young and arrogant. I feel nothing for them, except the desire to avoid more death. |
