(i'll write this story down, but you'll never guess the final twist)
Their jaunt home, through quiet forests and sprawling meadows is peaceful and warm. They are followed by birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves as they are tangled by the wind. He is quiet, moving steadfastly through the path with the lightest of steps, sometimes glancing back to his sandy companion and offering her a reassuring smile while Dei wheels gracefully overhead, assuring the path for the King of Thieves and his charge. When they arrive, it is several hours before evening, and the sky hangs big and blue overhead. The grass begins to get taller and lusher, robust under the gentle sunlight and nourishing spring rains. Formerly wide and well-trod, the path they follow narrows considerably from the Threshold, reduced to a mere deer-trail when it reaches the Foothills' heart.

The dun pauses as the distant roar of a cascade is heard, mighty and steadfast high above their heads. He swivels a slender ear towards her, nostrils flaring as they inhale the sweet, grassy scent. With little more than a flick of his auburn tail, Jackal whirls to face the wide-eyed mare, a rather proud grin on his face. "This is my home," he says, waiting for a bird to finish its springtime song. "And it may be yours as well, if you wish." From high below, Dei spirals toward the appaloosa in a streak of gilded wind, landing on his back with a flourish of jade eyes and great wings. Tilting his head lightly, he observes Owl, her reflection bright and glassy in the pane of his eyes.
