What happened to her to make her fear the world? It is a question that he ponders as he watches her, fearful until she recognizes him. She is still afraid of him, he is sure - something about the way she holds herself, forever ready to take flight, tells him so. Her voice, though, is calmer than when they had first met, and he is even blessed with a small smile. Something inside him warms, stretches, unfurls, and he swallows hard. She disagrees with her analysis of her beauty, and he wants to correct her, to tell her that of all the beauties he has seen - and that number is quite high, to be honest - that she alone stands out. But he remains silent, chooses not to argue. "I am indeed quite well, thank you, my lady." His tones are warm, gentle, and he observes the quirk of her head with kind eyes. Her mane and forelock blend together, tumbling in waves down her side, and again he forces himself to breathe. Stunning. He skims through his memory, remembers her departure with the warrior-fae Romani, remembers watching her go with an odd pressure in his chest, an unknown feeling in his heart. She had gone to... the Foothills, yes, that was it. "I trust that the Windtossed Foothills are treating you well?" It is a simple question, and he wants to hear a positive answer, despite the small voice in his mind that wants to coax her to stay with him, to allow him to protect her from the world, from her fears, however many there are. He had never felt this desire before, though he would normally be protective of a maiden in need - still, he would not want to take her with him once he had delivered her to safety. So why was this fae different? Was it her petite frame, the fragility that she exuded like the sweetest of perfumes? Or perhaps it was her shy, fearful demeanor, a persona that he felt would not be so easily cured as it might be to hand her off to someone else to care for. Perhaps it was that she seemed to need someone, to need more than what a herd could provide her, even as small a herd as that of the Foothills. He does not know, but he wanted to find out. |
