World's Edge Protector. It felt nice to say it. Roll it around in his mind, let it rest like a medal over his shoulders. He belonged now, a lion in his pride. Ink's thoughts described him well, whether he knew of them or not. Golden body gleamed under the light of Birdsong, dark chocolate legs moving his body towards the south west. Two toned plume swayed naturally in the small breeze that moved past him, reminding him that despite the warmth the breeze was relatively cool. Greenery reached up from the grasp of the earth, unfurling their leaves and straining towards the buttery sunlight. Brushing temptingly over his ankles, bidding him to dip his crown to indulge in their sweet taste. But no, he couldn't be bothered with that now. Something different called him. Something that could never be achieved where he stood rooted on the ground. Baby blue irises closed, taking in the wind that blew towards him. Long pillars drove him forth from a slow, leisurely walk into a ground eating canter. Chocolate and cream wings rose from his sides, extending and lifting. Aching for the skies that beckoned from above. The wind filled his wings, lifting them up as he caught the draft beneath him.

There was something so impossibly precious in flying. Being the only species that could achieve this, it was special. Orbs clashed with the sky around him, perfectly matched in color. Kaj seemed to have been made directly from the elements he loved the most. Gold from the rays of sunshine, blue from the skies above him, white from the clouds he dove through. Earth that crawled up his legs, reminding him that sometime he would have to land. As long as he wanted to stay in the sky, he could not. And this force tilted his wings, turning nearly vertical as he banked down back towards the ground. Where he was now he didn't know, but didn't mind. The stars would always guide him home, and in daylight the sun would do so as well. Glittering water winked up at him from below and a smile stretched his serene face. Angling himself for the river that cut through the land. Slowing his descent to land in a spray of white. Miraculously only his legs taking the brunt of the damage, should you call it that. Cascading droplet, reminiscent of rain, came down around him. Peppering his wings and mane, letting the feathers glisten in the afternoon sun. Sighing with content and wandering from the shallow body, casting his gaze around for any others that had come to enjoy the beautiful day presented to them.

the open-hearted make such a mess of themselves.</style>

A gentle spring breeze carried th kind-hearted shaman from her homeland. Her body was painted, a brilliant pure white interlaced with her mother's chocolate brown. While Kaj may have been a blend of his favorite elements, Onni was a perfect blend of her father and mother in appearance. You might ask the mare if her personality was a mix of both of her parents, but she had never properly met Zodiac; Kri rarely spoke of the stallion. As for her mother, Onni was very different in personality from the hothead of the Throat. Patient, kind, forgiving - a light aura radiated from the mare, bestowing even those who did not necessarily deserve a sweet smile with one to carry in their mind.

Like the soft airs upon which she floats, the mare who had faced her fair share of tragedy and challenges ruled her own life with a calm, serene outlook and treated everyone she met with care. The healer had long since turned from her training received from the stallion she came to view as her father, Voltaic the Samurai. Formerly hardened muscles were slackened to reveal a more lithe frame. Onni was more thin than she had been in her peak of strength, but she was hardly the elegant creature many admired. Average of height and build, kind-hearted Onni was far from statuesque. Any beauty that could be claimed by the mare was not, her modesty reigning supreme, especialy when she turned contemplation toward herself.

Certainly, Onni was not worthy of praise like the gleaming golden body of the pegasus below, drawing her light blue eyes to rest on his figure even from the distance between them. The glimmer of the spring rolling across the meadow, along with the reflected sun on the coat of this stranger, invited the painted mare to tilt her wings back toward the earth and join in a quick round of conversation and a sip to quench the thirst in her throat. Gentle circles bring her ever closer toward the ground, a slow descent likely noticed by the stallion at the bank of the small river. When her hooves finally meet with lush green fields, her face is already turned toward Kaj, a smile decorating her lips in welcome, even if she has no right to extend it. They were not standing within the Dragon's Throat, but on the turf of the Wilds.

"Hello," her voice - the ring of a small bell. A trill announces the small bird resting easy on her wing, nestled between the mass of blond hair and chocolate feathers. "I am Onni, Shaman of the Dragon's Throat." A quick walk brings her toward the side of the stallion, minding a few paces to keep from making him uncomfortable by her approach.

Wandering thoughts are a daily happening for the stallion. It is now that he succumbs to them, letting eyes wander over the dips and flows of the land he stands on. Flight of birds as they hop from branch to branch amuses his mind for a brief moment before it travels again. Always traveling, always seeking something to keep his mind busy. Perhaps it is this wandering of his attention that drove him to do what no other had done- leave his homeland. It had never happened before, where he had once lived. Nor was it of the norm to seek magic. That was a job for females, the wickedly strong that only relied on their protectors when their energy ran low. The large statues beside them were ever changing in personality, but you never abandoned the herd or your mage. Kaj however had done just that.

Liquid had cooled on his legs, dropping his temperature by a few degrees. The sun was ever worried for him it seemed, for the drops dried at a miraculous pace while he stood there on the bank. Bubbling laughter of the creek echoing behind him as he stretched his wings, relishing in the slight stretch around his shoulders where they connected. Blowing out through his nostrils softly, hoping for something to keep him there. It truly was a beautiful place, flourishing with the life that Birdsong brought. But it could not talk to him, keep his daydreaming mind at bay. Kaj needed a task, a job, a conversation. Anything really.

Air shifting overhead was heard and the stallion lifted his crown towards the heavens. Figure of a mare was easily spotted in comparison to the backdrop of cotton candy clouds and bright azure skies. Slowly circling downwards much like Kaj had done earlier, though she landed with a grace he had not desired in his splash in the creek. A bird rested happily upon one winged appendage. Delicate colors swept over the canvas of her body, painting it with gentle care. Everything about her seemed soft, sweet. Innocent white coat only tainted by the soft chocolate spots that lay across her in patches. Though Kaj would not venture to call it 'tainted', as it blended so well with the rest of her. Kind smile stretched her face, and it reminded Kaj of the warmth of the sun. Cozy, calm. Ever present, but never too overbearing.

She need not fear him, but her sweet smile welcomed him whether he were dangerous or not. Perhaps it was a good thing, but it could also be a bad thing. Similar to Tor, Kaj felt the same protective urge over the smaller doll. The thought of someone taking advantage of her kindness, which his mind told him could happen, infuriated him. Protective instincts never truly left him. He'd grown up like that after all. But he returned her smile with one of his own, face just as welcoming. Voice broke the silence that stood between them as he turned to fully face her, as was respectful. Chiming voice said a greeting, dictating her name and title. Onni stood a pace or two away, close enough to be friendly but giving him space that showed they were still acquaintances. As he had in all of his previous encounters, the golden lion dipped his head low to the ground, baby blues still on her face as he bent one knee. Raising back up after this, smile turning a bit playful. "Hello to you as well, Miss Onni." Deep voice shaking his chest, fitting of his stature as it hit the lower registry. "I am Kaj, Protector of the World's Edge. How does this fine morning suit you, my lady?" Honest curiosity painting his tone, ears pricked solely on her. Attention focused on Onni alone. Some found it rather unnerving at times, saying it was an intense sort of consciousness. Kaj simply could not help his nature. Onni interested him, and he would devote all of his thoughts to her because of it.

the open-hearted make such a mess of themselves.</style>

Calm, steady, like the wind which curled over Onni's body gently to remind that Birdsong still had a hint of winter's refreshing chill. Under the glimmer of the sun, the wind was welcomed much the same as Kaj had just been. The painted mare standing easily a few feet from his side, light eyes of the sky watching him with a shy curiosity. The deep crimson of Lyhty's eyes follow his movements as well, the little songbird hopping easily along her wing and shoulder. Occasionally, the small black beak reaches up to preen her blonde mane, seeking comfort as the healer's attention has shifted to this stranger. The pair did not have the luxury of words, but Lyhty knew his bonded was often blindly trusting of those she did not know. Never had Onni found herself in a situation where she was within the reach of harm, but the small songbird still worried for the sweet mare.

Naive, trusting. Was there any reason for her not to be as such?

Certainly, Onni had plenty of lessons to teach her that life was not always a blue summer sky. There had been plenty of thunderstorms shaking the core of her home, separating her from her mother, tearing rifts between her beloved mentor and she, and shadows chasing her to a new home. In this new home, the shaman had found light beside the darkness. Her spirit had chosen the light, not surprisingly, though some may doubt the pureness of the former warrior in training. If any were in doubt, it was not this golden stallion offering her an unexpected bow. Quite taken aback, the mare's light eyes widened before settling back in a calm expression. A deep bow of her neck is offered to this stranger as well, resulting in a displeased squawk from Lyhty, who was nearly dislodged from her shoulder from the movement. The peel of a golden laugh break's Onni's lips, looking over her shoulder with a patient smile.

"Apologies, my friend," she whispers to the bird before turning her attention back to their company, who introduces himself after lifting with a smile. Smiles were much more familiar to Onni in contrast to reverence. Though she had been the healer in the Throat practically since she arrived in this land so many months ago, there had been few who treated her as one worthy of such respect. Being a creature of a modest soul, perhaps it was just as well. Onni did not know how to handle being fawned over; her mother certainly had never treated her in such a way. A gruff upbringing, but not one lost of love.

At his question, the tobiano begins to look around the meadow, taking in the beauty of Birdsong, the blooming flowers and the gentle green of grass. "A beautiful morning always treats you well. It reminds me I have not left my home in far too long," she says sheepishly, looking at the glimmering water to escape meeting the gaze of Kaj. The reality was that the shaman had become little more than a hermit, living solely within the red expanse of the desert and rarely leaving it. The outside of the desert was just as beautiful as her crimson home. She was glad to have ventured out this morning. "How are your fellow warriors of the Edge, Kaj? Have they recovered well from the invasion?" A pale face turns to one of burnished gold, looking at him intently. She did not recognize his face from the battle in the forest, so perhaps he would be surprised by her mention of war. Still, the healer could not help but wonder how her former patients were doing. Were they well? Had they recovered from their wounds completely?

Soft azure orbs meet his and Kaj smiles just a little more at the similarity that rests in such a focal point of their makeup. It reflects her spirit well, if her words are anything for basis. Kaj knows he should not judge her so quickly, and leaves his mind open to the best of his abilities. Misunderstandings can easily rupture a forming friendship, and he refuses to make that mistake with the pretty doe. Again gaze is drawn to the bird that rests upon her slim shoulder, dark beak playing with strands of cream. Small, dark eyes flicker between them, and Kaj takes a moment to appreciate the creature. He has never thought of asking for a companion himself, but the idea is quite intriguing. Someone to share your mind with, wholly. Who will understand you always. Onni surely is never alone with her companion, and he is respectfully envious of her for that.

Mind was snagged on the prospect of a companion, and Kaj fell prey to the wanderings of his mind once again. As a colt he had always been told that he would never be allowed the miracle of magic, nor the comfort of a bonded. Simply because he had been born male, he would be doomed to never experience the thrill of an immortal gift. At first, with an impressionable mind and malleable demeanor, he had accepted this. At that age, every word spoken was truth. Elders were wise and, to him, could never lie. Perhaps this was what had driven Kaj to always be honest, becoming a rather horrendous liar in the process. Speaking the truth was honorable to him. However as he grew from a gangly, awkward colt into the massive stallion he was now, he started to doubt their words. Protector and Mage. Symbiotic. relationship between man and woman, regardless of relationships or feelings. Was life truly so divided? Kaj had always been entranced by the magic the dolls held, wondered how it would feel to wield something so divine and powerful. After the death of his precious baby sister, he had been unable to believe that as a Protector he could do nothing to help her. The Mage he was assigned to had refused to heal her, as she was the only one he could ask. Protectors could not ask for favors from any Mage but their own. Distraught he had left, mourning for the brilliant life that had been snuffed out by the seemingly inborn arrogance of the magic wielders. It had given him an even deeper level of understanding of why he was a gentleman. Kaj had always treated women with respect, but after his little sister had died with such a loving and accepting look on her face he had been unable to speak ill of them unless they honestly deserved it. All along he had been shaped into the person he was, standing beside the chocolate painted beauty on that day.

Shaking memories from his mind, all caused by a small bird, he focused again on Onni. Smiling when she seemed quite surprised to see him bow to her, returning it in her own way. Squalling came from the creature on her shoulder as he objected to this sudden movement, and Kaj let out a deep chuckle. Eyes full of mirth, showing he did not mean to insult the pair by his laughter. It seemed even the beauty was amused by this sudden outburst of noise, as laughter bubbled from her lips as well; whispering quietly to the bird before turning back to him. Kaj watched this transpire with apparent curiosity, intrigued by the understanding they shared. They moved as if they were magnets, shifting about to accommodate each other without truly realizing it. Revolving around each other like the planets around the sun, so completely comfortable that there was little to no friction between their personalities. Observing them was a past time he could easily become fascinated with. He would have to remember this later, so that in the privacy of his own thoughts he could ponder over the nature of a bonded and their companion. If he was so entertained by the idea, perhaps he should look into getting one himself.

Her gaze follows the contours of the land at his question, taking in the environment much like he had upon his arrival. Sunlight washes over the land, and in turn casts itself over their shoulders. Warming them like a gentle breath upon a beloved’s cheek. Kaj revels in it, finding the change in climate much more inviting when compared to his misted home beside the sea. Nevertheless he would never wish to leave, as his heartbeat already feels like the beating of the waves he hears endlessly. It has taken its hold on him, and he knew that it was already in his veins. Humming softly when Onni speaks, chuckling a little at the tone she uses. ”Then I am glad that today you have, or I would never have met you,” he says, though he does not realize the intimacy of his words. He is simply glad to have found her company. ”Although I admit to having spent quite a lot of time in my home as well.” Reluctant to leave so soon, enjoying the newfound sense of belonging at last. Or perhaps the correct phrase would be ‘again’. Though he severely doubted he would feel as though he belonged should he return to his homeland.

Gentle tone brings him to think of his fellow soldiers, though he has only grown close with Aaron who had met him when he’d first been accepted. ”I am still getting to know my brothers, but I am confident when I say that despite recent events they remain strong and well.” Oh yes, he’d heard about Mirage, Solstice, Kiara. It pained him, stirred a beginning of dislike towards the ones who had taken them. Though he had never met them, those of the Edge spoke highly of them. News of the invasion, however has passed his ears. Quite thoroughly, he finds. ”I am unaware of this invasion, I’m afraid. Though I can say that I have not encountered any wounded.” Unable to feel embarrassed, nor ashamed at admitting his own lack of knowledge. He is not overly prideful, and believes that those who can admit they are wrong or mislead are much stronger than those who continue to lie about the topic. Head tilts in curiosity and he peers down at her a little. ”I do believe we are allies? The Throat, yes? You are very kind for worrying over my kin, Miss Onni, especially after such a time.” Finding himself rather touched on behalf of his siblings, amazed that Onni would still be so concerned after a few seasons had passed. Wounds would have healed in their natural way long before this day. ”However I will definitely pass on to them your concern, should you wish?” Perhaps a certain person? If they were allies then she surely had to know a few of his kinsmen.

 onni.</style>
the open-hearted make such a mess of themselves.</style>

Fleeting was the shadow that crept across Kaj's face. Onni had seen in flicker across, just as she had turned her attention back toward him from Lyhty. It was not surprising for anyone to hold demons in their mind, past memories which snag your conscious thought and twist your face into ugly expressions. If not for surpassing optimism, Onni might appear the same. She remembered on the shores of the Endless Blue, meeting a stranger and revealing her own fresh wounds. Sparrow, that was the buttermilk stallion's name, who she had shared strange questions with. This was a habit of Onni's, obviously, to ask such pointed and direct questions that were likely out of place in small talk.

While the once solitary mare had come a very long way in her ability to interact with others, there were still times, much like now, that her awkward conversation strategies made her novice apparent. She was not a socialite, did not understand the ways of subtlety, was blind to hidden meanings often in conversation, and appeared absent of what lines of familiarity were proper when talking with others. Kaj was little more than a stranger, yet Onni spoke to him with warm tones that, while perhaps shy in their delivery, were not suggestive that she viewed him as anything short of a friend. Indeed, she assumed his company well enough to ask him of the other World's Edge soldiers, though the mare had no idea about his past or if he had become acquainted with them. Delving into serious topics while avoiding light hearted banter was just a unique trait to the soft-spoken mare from the land of the Sun, one that she had carried for most of her life.

Perhaps because she knows no better, Onni holds no suspsicion of Kaj's words. The mare only smiles, glad to have made the acquaintance of this larger golden male as well on this day. Any other possible constructs of the words were absent of her mind, no ulterior motives needed. "Home holds many comforts. I think it is only natural to wish to stay in its warm embrace," the shaman nods with her words in response to the statement that he too enjoyed remaining in the land he called home. What a strange coincidence that two such homebodies would stumble upon each other on their adventures. Some might say the hands of fate had crossed their paths, but Onni would find this foolish. She had met a deity of this land, and thought he would likely have no interest in which mortal met which.

The serious topic of soldiers, stealth, and war comes about, shattering reverie, but leaving the painted mare no less pleased to be in the company of this new stallion. Her eyes keep locked upon Kaj's, even as he voice becomes more somber to match the heavier topic. Onni had heard of the ambushes taking the head of the Edge and others captives, her mother's own form of vengeance bringing some of the Basin to reside within the borders of the Throat. She had little interest in politics, however, and chose to remain quiet, though she felt that holding prisoners of your enemy was a dangerous game in itself. She nods, unable to offer him little else, despite being pleased that he is becoming closer with his fellow warriors. A warm enough bond, it seems, to call them brothers. A happy glint rests in her eyes, but she keeps quiet.

Kaj had no personal knowledge of the invasion, and for some reason, this makes the healer happy. His beautiful golden figure did not seem fit for battle, regardless of his title as a soldier. He looked more like a peaceful character, though she was certain he had earned the rank of a warrior in his home through skill. It was odd, to invision his chocolate brown hooves dealing damage to another. It was more odd, she supposed, to imagine a healer being a skilled fighter. The world was strange. "So you are relatively new to this land," she states, rather firmly, but not judgmentally. It was refreshing to think that others found refuge in Helovia still. It was a land graced by tentative peace, despite the occasional invasions that rocked the land and stole away her mentor. Her eyes close momentarily, thinking of Voltaic's body crumpled and broken on the red sand.

Something were better left untouched in your memory.

"I am glad to hear they are well," she says, opening her eyes with a smile again. It would be better not to worry this stallion with things that were trapped in the past. There was no way to fix it. His next words intrigue her, and the shaman takes a curious light on her pale face as she listens. Lyhty, sensing her interest, scoots vaguely closer toward the golden stallion, chirping quietly. She pauses for thought, her face slightly distant before her focus returns. "Our homes are tied by alliances, but I am not one to care for such things," her voice is soft yet serious, the healer speaking as she might to a pupil. "The true duty of one with the ability to heal is to aid those who need it, regardless of imaginary lines drawn by society. I would not deny my gift to any who ask."

Genuine light on her face, Onni is happy to speak of her gift given by the God of the Sun. "I worry for my patients, maybe like a parent for their child." It seems contemplative, her words and the look that casts over her face. His offer is kind; she cannot deny his pure intentions. However, a flush of shyness crawls up in her chest, and she might blush beneath the white of her coat. Looking back toward the glittering stream, the mare lets out a breath. "You should not trouble others with my concerns. I am pleased to have improved their lives. That is happiness enough, but thank you for your kind offer, Kaj."

Memories hold him for a surprising amount of time, though it does not seem that way once he has resurfaced in the conversation. Kaj allows himself a small smile, eyes briefly closing. Mourning was a natural process, but he had his time and he knew that his sister was in an infinitely better place. She had gone to the side of the Gods with a smile and loving words directed towards him, and though he wished he could have saved her he knew it wasn’t to be. Dwelling on it was not natural for him, but he supposed he wasn’t perfect. As he returned bright azure gaze to the painted lady before him, he wished he was better with words. Wished he was a socialite of some sort; that he didn’t speak so much with actions. Onni probably deserved a better conversational partner, but Kaj wasn’t one to change for other people. He simply wished that he wasn’t so quiet at times, for Onni truly did strike him as interesting and he honestly wanted to get to know her better. Whether he could or not with his rather stunted abilities in conversation was yet to be seen, but hopefully he wouldn’t bore her to tears on one of her rare days away from her home. That would truly be a shame, though the thought of him being so boring made him smile in faint traces of amusement.

Naïve souls flock together, it seems. Though neither of them realizes it. Her smile brings one forth on his own face, and he hums softly as he contemplates her words. Taking a few moments to roll them around in his mind, formulate a reply before at last he speaks. The process is longer than most, who speak before a thought can ever cross their mind. "I must agree with you, Miss Onni. I shall never understand the wanderers, though I bless their travels." Thinking of Tor and hoping her the best of trails, a soft look on his visage. She had been pleasant company, though he would admit to knowing very little about her. Nevertheless he wouldn’t judge her for being an outcast, and would never place judgment upon any of the gypsies of Helovia. He simply loved his herd too much, adored the feeling of belonging and welcoming he felt when he stepped into its borders. Whether someone knew you by name or not they greeted you with respect, friendliness depending on their personality. Simply because you had their scent, you were a brother and they would have your back. Kaj thrived on that, and though he wasn’t one to leave his home often he was glad he had on that afternoon. Onni was pleasant company, and they were very alike in their thoughts from what he had gathered.

Although he wouldn’t recommend their current topic. It saddened him that people would stoop so low as to remove a soul from their dear home simply for the sake of politics. Was that the reality of war? Kaj wasn’t easy to anger, but he was severely disappointed and found them to be below him if they resorted to such dirty means. But it also helped them, gave them an advantage in wars and invasions. It was always a difficult decision to make, and Kaj was grateful that he didn’t have to make those decisions. Onni’s gaze doesn’t leave his and he is grateful for the fact that somebody isn’t unnerved by the way he happens to stare at them when he speaks. If he doesn’t his mind wanders and to him that was disrespectful whether he could help it or not. Though calling it staring made it sound unnatural and almost creepy. Kaj held in a chuckle.

Again she speaks and he isn’t bothered by her pointing out that he is new to Helovia. It was the truth after all. ”Yes I am. But I am hoping to remain here for the rest of my days,” he admits, smiling almost shyly. Many judged him, finding him strange for wanting such a quaint life. Females in his old herd were drawn to the hungry, the power seekers. Those who could give them thrill and adventure. Kaj preferred a mellow existence. A family, a task that he could work at every day and return from tired but happy to embrace his children and mate. Cheesy, he called himself in his mind. Though he is taken from his thoughts as Onni’s blues are hidden from him for a few moments. When they open she is smiling, but he knows something has touched her mind that has brought her a small dose of sadness. He doesn’t pry, but concern is in his gaze when he looks at her. After all Kaj is a good listener, though he wouldn’t dare ask her what crossed her mind. Onni hadn’t asked him when he’d been thinking of his sister, and it was only fair to return the gesture by keeping out of her private thoughts. He wasn’t in the position to ask her, having just met her.

Curiosity shines on her face but the movement of her bird draws him for a moment and he smiles as it came closer towards him. Peering at him much like its bonded. Aureate stallion listened closely to her words and nodded along to show he completely agreed, unable to stop the motion that showed he was both listening and taking in what she was saying. Although amusement shone on his face at her tone, it was rather like a teacher or an elder, informing those beneath them of the ways of the world. ”I am sorry if I have offended you, I was merely curious if I was correct. Alliances do not rule my actions, and I agree with you on your points,” he assured, not wanting her to believe that he was asking under the pretense that he wouldn’t accept her should she be of a different herd. It was simple curiosity, though he learned quite a bit from her passionate words. Head tilts and a bright, interested look takes over. ”You are a healer, then?” Kaj may hold the position of soldier, but he secretly desired to take on a craft of some sort in the Edge. He was better at creativity, and was interested in his fellow member Lace for holding the position he did.

Onni seemed almost sheepish, perhaps shy. Kaj wasn’t very good at determining emotions. ”Then you take great pride in your gifts, and for that I still find you a rather impressive individual,” he said firmly, but he is smiling to assure her that she cannot escape him complimenting her. He doesn’t do it to woo her, like many other stallions. If she had the bravery to go to the Veins and face a God in order to help people over the land, and then cared for them long after their injury was healed then he thought she was incredible for remaining so compassionate and respected her for it. Crown bowed down a little to show this, though his eyes don’t leave hers. Curious as to why she turned her head away for a brief moment but focusing instead on her words.

Chuckling he shakes his head, waving away the thought of her burdening him. ”It is no trouble at all, Miss Onni. If you wish to remain in contact with your patients, it would be an honor to carry that message for you. It would give me happiness, but if you are adamant then I shall speak nothing to their ears,” he amended. Blinking owlishly at her words, rather shocked that she would call his offer kind. Was it kind? He always did such things for people, but if she found it to be a kindness then she was not wrong for they were her thoughts. She had spoken of her patients, saying she cared for them like a parent. If that bond was established then he would be saddened to know that distance kept them from speaking regularly like friends. ”If I may be so presumptuous as to ask, what inspired you to be a healer?” Composing the words so that she could turn him down without feeling guilty. Kaj only knew how to be a soldier, but if Onni had the courage to go to the resting place of the immortals then maybe he could take a page from her book of wisdom and learn some more about his new home. Maybe it would help him decide what he should strive for, if being a soldier was right for him when it went against so many of his morals.

Silently taking in information, Onni's ears are attentive and perked, her head held steady upon her neck, light blue eyes watching gently as Kaj speaks. Filing away the information that he plans to stay, but not actively responding to it aside from the occasional nod of her head to note that she was mulling it over. With no home in Isilme to return to, Onni had found herself here in the land of Helovia. Were it not from the push directly from Voltaic, it was possibly the painted girl would have had her life claimed defending her beloved island home from the shadows of the dead. An eerie thought to consider but no less true. There had been a time when Onni was little more than a warrior, fighting to protect those she loved much like her mother. Now, she was quite the opposite of her formal self.

Instead of battling with her hooves, Onni battled with the light of fire to heal the wounds cause by others. Ultimately, the business of protection had never changed, just the method in which she chose to go about it. However, there was no decisive moment in which the girl had found herself changing from the rank of a soldier. In truth, the God of the Sun had chosen her with his own will, granting her the ability to be the vessel for his holy light soon after her arrival. She had been drawn to the Dragon's Throat for its similarity to the Crimson Cliffs, but she had stayed to follow the calling of a healer. It was during this time she began to see Helovia as home, her new home. The Dragon's Throat would be a land she would die for, if necessary, but she hoped that day would never come. Let peace fall upon her beloved home. Let her stay in its welcoming arms underneath the light of the sun.

Kaj, apparently being a homebody, would understand her love for the land, even if it was not the red home that had claimed part of her heart. It was because of this that the mare began to grow less concerned about infringing upon his personal space, taking a few steps closer toward the bank of the river, hooves sinking slightly in the wet sand as she lowers her head for a quick drink of water. When she had begun speaking of the alliances, it seems her tone had stirred some worry in the heart of Kaj, as he quickly apologizes for perhaps offending her. Onni smiles, a show of forgiveness, but more to assure him that she was not worried in the least about it. "You needn't worry. It takes much more to offend me," she says, her voice calm and genuine. "The Qian is my mother's oldest remaining ally." There had been others, but they had fallen apart like grains of sand. Onni did not ask where they came from, nor where they had gone to hide. Politics were frankly not her arena, and that is one similarity she shared with her mother well.

"I am," she hums in response to his question, Lyhty understanding the word and chirping excitedly. "And Lyhty is my helper," a smile on her face as she glances to the small bird on her wing. Slightly embarrassed by being mentioned, the bird hides his small black face behind a larger chocolate feather. Onni, too, was quite shy when it comes to compliments, and her face makes an abrupt escape to the sky as Kaj mentions how she likely takes pride in her talent. An impressive individual? The modest mare would flee from such a statement, if it would not paint her as a fool in this situation. Instead, she is rooted to her position, looking up at the blue sky painted with soft clouds and sunlight. In all honesty, the painted girl thought herself rather mundane, one who did things from necessity. She wished to be of use to others, not to impress upon them. As long as she had become a mare her mother could take pride in, Onni was pleased. There was no need for superfluous admiration.

Almost as if she did not hear his statement, the girl remains quiet, the beads of her blonde mane clinking as a slight breeze tugs at her face and refreshes her nerves. "As long as they are well," a smile renewed on her face as she speaks to Kaj. "That will be my joy." While it would please him to deliver a message, Onni wondered if the warriors of the invasion could recall her name or face from the turmoil of the battle's aftermath. Burned land, flesh, blood, broken bones - it reminded her very much of the destruction of her home and the invasion of the Shades. Dragon fire did little to harm the shades, but it had taken its toll on several unicorns of the Edge. The shaman remembered the taste of burnt flesh on her tongue as she stood amid the aftermath. War was not kind to any, not the victors and especially not the medics.

Kaj's question takes her quite by surprise, and her pale face moves instantly back to meet his gaze, sky blue pools widened for a moment, obviously caught off-guard. She glances down quickly, trying to gather her thoughts as to what to say. The painted mare thought her story would be a disappointment, as she had never made a conscious decision to seek out healing abilities. Her lips tug into a momentary frown before she looks up. "I never chose to be a healer, though maybe I secretly desired it so. I came to Helovia as a warrior," she says honestly, see no valid reason to lie, unless she had wanted to seem impressive to him - there was that word again. "I felt a warmth touch my heart when I entered the Dragon's Throat shortly after my arrival here in Helovia. As far as I know, that was the moment that my powers came to me."

"Without asking, without even thinking about healing, I became the Shaman," she smiles, thinking about the golden deity of her home guiding her from a most foreign and foul decision of resorting to violence to avenge Cera. He had been kind, though reserved, and Onni had found within him the mentor she had been longing. "The God of the Sun has always known better than me the language of my heart."

It seems the both of them are not quite adept at conversation, for there is little coming and going on both sides. Even so Kaj finds himself enjoying it, small as it may be. Onni, after all, was competent and kind without being overbearingly sweet like some mares he had encountered. At times he wondered if she found him to be dreadful, for he wasn’t much of a talker. Then she would do something similar and he would be secretly amused that two people could be so awkward at the same time whilst still having a rather decent talk. Kaj was a bit of a brick wall at times, not that he meant to be. He simply couldn’t be asked to focus his attention on something that wasn’t immediately captivating. Onni was a lucky one, for through the combination of her sweetness, awkwardness, companion, and position she had actually managed to retain his interest. Which in all made him sound like a rather terrible person, but he always tried his best to please those he met. He simply had an incessantly wandering mind, in which the levels of focus differed quite a lot. Onni was taking it rather well, though he supposed birds of a feather really do flock together.

Even so there were long stretches of silence, though none were uncomfortable in any way. It let Kaj’s mind wander peacefully without worrying that he was destroying the conversation. He was starting to feel useless in the Edge, despite depositing many members within their ranks. The stallion did not handle sitting still very well, he needed to do something physical, have some sort of routine. Perhaps in the future he could seek out Aaron for spar lessons, as Kaj was lacking a bit from continuous land and air travel. Sitting still for days on end made him garner too much energy in his limbs, which had led him to this exploration far from the reaches of his home.

It was such a beautiful day, he found himself musing. Kaj had long since given up trying to define his thoughts, often they simply happened. It was great to have met someone like Onni, especially on a day when he was far too happy to argue or fight. It was such a waste of time, and secretly he wished to work with materials. Kaj was a wonderful fighter, and had been on the path to the spot of General in his old home. He loved fighting, but his mind called for creativity. It was a constant struggle between two things he loved rather dearly, a reason why he had abandoned his home. Without magic he could not create, and if he were to receive magic in his old home he would have been marked worse than filth. It was a sad but truthful statement. Perhaps once he had met Lace, he would be able to decide. He believed strongly in the system they already had, trusted those who led him. There was no need for him to strive for power, and he would not. All that as left to decide was whether to aid his home through brute strength or creative reinforcements.

Onni’s words had him lurching back out of his thoughts and he sheepishly turned back to her, ashamed to have been caught so deep once again. Relieved to find he had not offended her. ”Merely checking. The women of my former land were rather easy to insult, wouldn’t want you chewing my ear off, Miss Onni,” he chuckled. Hoping to lighten the atmosphere a bit, though it wasn’t down in the least. News of her mother made brow arch in curiosity. Kri was the leader of the Throat, that he was aware of at least. That’s how he’d come across the information that they were allies, but he had not been informed that Onni was her daughter. He could see the resemblance now that he looked, but found that he could not compare Onni to her mother very much other than physically. At least from what he had seen, but there were always deeper and more sophisticated layers to people that had to be explored through long months of knowing each other. One meeting was not going to show him all about her. He didn’t comment, for she probably had far too many people that judged her unfairly or thought too highly of her for being Kri’s daughter. Kaj was rather grateful that he was not born of one so notorious, for he could not have handled the strain.

Lyhty seemed to be her companion’s name, and he fit that in quickly before he forgot it like a thousand other things. Both bird and dame grew embarrassed, and Onni did not reply at all to his compliments. Kaj at first was rather perplexed. Had he done something wrong? Said something that had offended her? His mother had always told him to compliment ladies, to always be a gentleman, and did not see what he had done to make her retreat so quickly. It took him a few moments but then he realized she was far too modest to accept it, and smiled. Stretching out muzzle to gently brush it along the curve of her neck, hoping to draw her eyes back to him so he could speak to her. ”You do not have to accept my compliments, Miss Onni. I merely speak out what I see, and my mother would have my tail for not complimenting a lady. It is rare to find someone who actually loves what they do. Will you not even do me the honor of thanking me, whether you are sincere or not?” Eyes danced with amusement, though he was being entirely honest. He wanted to know that she understood that he was not trying to impress or coddle her for her status, but that he was rather truthful about what he thought. Kaj hadn’t encountered someone like Onni, who would awkwardly turn away at compliments, but hoped that the light banter would keep her from feeling too stressed or unwilling to reply. He much preferred her voice to her ignoring him in a way over his compliments.

Soft hum is all that escapes him when she speaks of her patients. He cannot dictate what she does, and will abide by her words, but would always be willing to impart words upon those she cared for. Though he supposed there would be a bit of tension in some cases, as war and injury often drove you to a state of mind that was not your own. Kaj had experienced it himself, defending the mare he was bonded to. You didn’t think, didn’t act on a level of intelligence that you normally did. You became a monster acting on instinct, and the victor was the one who had the better skills and memory throughout the process of losing your mind to battle. Maybe Onni knew this, though Kaj didn’t find it necessary to push her over thoughts that could or could not reside in her mind.

Crown nearly whips over to him, clearly surprised by his question. Momentarily guilt finds its way across his shoulders for surprising her so, but it is almost entirely harmless. Her frown made him curious as to what she would say, though he found he couldn’t match the reason why to her words. Soon enough a smile covers up the frown that had once lingered on her lips, speaking of the Sun God with an almost reverence that he finds impressive once again. She was simply impressive to him, though he chuckled in his mind when he realized he was using the same word over and over again. He really should talk more, maybe he’d learn more vocabulary that way. ”Then he chose a worthy candidate. Perhaps being chosen for characteristics inside is more noble than working towards something that may not necessarily suit you. The fact that an immortal being would take interest in you at all is mind boggling, though where I lived all females were blessed with such skills. At least you have no regrets?” Coming out more as a question than anything, wondering if she had been upset that she had had a role thrust upon her without her consent. Kaj would have, though perhaps only momentarily. Either way it appeared that she eventually come to agree whole-heartedly with the Sun God who had given her the gift of healing, for she had stayed in the position for so long.

Being one who did not understand possess the finesse of conversation, Onni was hard-pressed to find individuals who did not seem to notice her at times awkward mannerisms. Long pauses of silence are taken without a thought to her conversational partner, and luck would have it that Kaj was just the type to ignore her lapses in etiquette. In fact, he seemed as equally as distracted by thoughts and the beauty of the day, which made it all the easier for Onni to flatly ignore the need to fill gaps of silence. While many would probably feel uncomfortable in her quiet presence, the tobiano felt a sort of companionable silence here in the company of Kaj. The discourse was friendly enough, filling Onni's heart with the light glow of happiness that she could find one to share her mind with.

Long periods of time spent wandering had left the mare a bit rough around the edges, but she was kind and friendly enough, while still embarrassingly shy about particular things. Kaj's words draw a giggle from her mouth, and Lyhty hops up cheerfully in response as well. "Do I really look the sort to be so confrontational?" Her pale face is happy, not accusatory. The slight folly of thinking her to be easy to offend was one she found amusing, never having had any make the mistake before. Perhaps, when they discovered she was the daughter of Kri the Resolute they would reconsider, but Onni was her own individual. The pair, while close, were so vastly separated in personality you would almost never make the connection until they were standing side by side. There were plenty of similar features externally to her mother, but aside from the determination of the little paint, the illuminant healer would never match up with the Commander. Not so long ago, Onni would have felt shame in admitting that she was so different from the mother she had idolized as a girl, but she had matured past this point.

To be your own individual was beautiful and honorable.

The arch of the stallion's brow did not go unnoticed, and Onni takes a breath as she realizes she may have stepped too lightly upon a topic otherwise avoided. The Shaman had no interest in garnering respect through the name of her mother, but regardless it occurred. Still, Kaj says nothing about it, only tucking the information away for potential later reference and giving her an odd glance. The mare was thankful he did not press her further on the matter of Kri, as she was painfully aware of how many tended to dislike the little bay. She could not entirely blame those who chose to abhor her mother, but the tobiano knew the greatest fault of her mother was the tendency of her personality to be misinterpreted. Much like the Sun God, her temper had led to many misunderstandings. Onni would never abandon her mother, but that did not hold any other to her side.

The blue sky above calls her to soothe the strange fit of embarrassment the shaman feels at Kaj's compliments, eyes of the same tone finding comfort in the ocean above. So busy avoiding looking toward the golden boy in case he should slip in another boast for her sake that she doesn't notice as he extends a soft muzzle toward her side. It is with surprise that Onni realizes she is being touched, gently, and jumps a little out of her skin. Unhappily, Lyhty screeches at Kaj for startling the mare, only to be clucked and chided at by the paint. "Shh, Lyhty," she says, a voice for a misbehaving child. "It is alright." In the process, her eyes turn back to fall upon the face of her company, light eyelashes still turned slightly downward to hide shy pools of crystalline blue. Her voice is heavy, thick, and tight in her throat, finding its way to the surface with no sense of ease, feeling all the more embarrassed as she reluctantly accepts the compliments of the stallion, face shuffling back away to the surface of the twinkling water. "Thank you, Kaj."

Speaking of the Sun God settles the race of her heart, feeling the warmth that his presence brings her. Above, the sun shines with a gentle light, and it radiates into her soul. To be without the guiding deity she had come to respect would be tragic, much like her loss of former beacons. While she trusted the golden steed of fire and light, Onni wished to better understand his ways. That he felt her suitable for the role of healer was rather amazing to her, for even when aiding Silverline on the shores of the Islands, the painted girl had thought forlornly how she was built better to protect through force than with a gentle hand. The push given to her by the Sun was all it had taken to convince her otherwise, though not immediately and not without practice. She had been too novice to save Voltaic, and that scar still tore across her heart painfully. Still, all of the faces of those she saved were comfort for the failures, no matter how massive an impact their loss had taken on her.

"I think he is lonely," Onni says frankly, when Kaj speaks of how special it is for him to have taken an interest in her. "He tries very hard to distance himself, but the Sun cannot hide his light." Smiling to Kaj, she seems a bit sheepish, speaking of a great God as though she knew his inner workings. She did not, but from the experience he had given her, the advice and the comfort, the magic that healed those who live in this world, the mare cannot help but believe that the God of the Sun is kind. "I believe he cares about us mortals a lot more than he would have us know. Because of this, I have no regret assuming the duty of a shaman."

I found that Onni was a rather strange individual. Do not be mistaken, for I was not insulting her in any way. All the females I had ever met were incredibly vain, vying for attention and flattery that I was unwilling to give. I was an awkward man when it came to emotions, especially those that had to be faked like flattery. I was very honest with my heart, and I could not force myself to compliment a woman who did not deserve it. And yet, I was perplexed by Onni’s seeming inability to accept the praise I bestowed upon her. I had thought over this at least three times since she had silently declined, and wondered why it returned so often to my brain. Was I doing something wrong? I was out of practice yet, but I had said it with honesty. I was rather helpless with social conventions, and just resignedly chalked it up to my own awkward fumbling. I had likely done something wrong, though I assumed Onni was humble and not used to being observed or praised in such a way. How odd, though I chided myself for comparing her to my ex family members. Onni was not like them, thank the heavens. We are both enveloped in a bubble of quiet, the laughter of the brook and the sweet songs of the birds in the distance all that remained among our soft breaths. It is comforting that someone, out of everyone in the world of Helovia, understands my silences.

Her face glows like the sun she idolizes when she smiles, and I find myself returning it. Even Lyhty seems to cheer at my words, and I hope I can keep this up. It is far better to laugh and joke with her than talk of more serious matters, not that I am incapable of contemplating such things. ”Of course not, Miss, but you can always surprise me,” I chuckle, enjoying the light-hearted banter that she allowed me to engage her in. Her soft breath does not escape my notice and I hope that she realizes that I am merely interested in the fact she is not gloating. Slowly I shrug my shoulders and smile sheepishly to show her that no, I am not bothered by the fact she is the heir to the throne of the Dragon’s Throat, in a way. Her eyes do not find me, and when I touch her she lurches away. Suddenly uncomfortable I step back once, giving her space. Apology written out in silence on my face. Lyhty vocalized unhappiness and I awkwardly gazed down at the soft grass that grows on the banks we stand on. She thanks me and I hum softly in my throat, unwilling to make myself seem even more foolish. I don’t understand why I’m so jittery and eager to make her smile, and I wish to leave many times. After all I am doing a rather terrible job of making friends with her, and my experiences are not aiding me in this confrontation.

I stand like an awkward mountain before her, wondering why I have to be so obvious and unable to melt into the background. I curse my genes for giving me white-blonde looks and bright eyes, for I am far from outgoing. Why could I not have been born under swathes of plain brown? Plain. I like plain, for that is the closest word I can fit myself into. Yanking myself out of my depressing thoughts, I focus again on the tobiano princess. It’s weird to call her that since it’s, for once, true. However she is speaking and I have to wrangle my floating mind under control so that I can actually focus on her words. I manage a brief, flickering smile, for my thoughts are everywhere. ”I would not know, Miss Onni, I have never met the Gods before. However I will trust your words, as you seem to know him best,” I rumble, and my smile comes out a bit more sincere this time around. I roll my shoulders, for they are reminding me that I am not moving. Work is my life, and my life is work. Maybe I’ve been cursed, born this way, and I allow a deep sigh to rumble from my lips. Why am I dwelling on such things? So I perk up a bit, though I don’t particularly like that word. I wish to fly, but know that conversation may be a bit more difficult in the skies, and I am unwilling to break away from Onni so soon.
