Romani

She couldn’t breathe.

The pure agony, confusion, and self-loathing that filled her compact frame made it difficult to suck in breaths, uncertainty about everything causing her once soft, azure eyes to be wide and wild with fear. What was happening to her? Why couldn’t she remember them?! First, it had been Abdullah, the pretty gray Arabian who had encountered her in the Foothills… Then, Xanthos, the handsome grullo stallion who had told her that he loved her. He loved her! And how did she repay him? With confusion, skepticism, and fear.

At first Romani had been convinced that Xanthos had been lying, that he had been playing with her and toying with her emotions, but then… Oh, the sadness that had crept into his once joyous expression when she had told him that she didn’t know who he was… There was no way anyone could fake that. It was too true, too perfect, and it caused an unknowing pain to strike her in the heart. They had met in the Thistle Meadow, and since then, she hadn’t ventured far from the safety of the Foothills. The fear of encountering more that knew her was beginning to overwhelm her, for nothing hurt the Haflinger more than to see the look of utter disappointment shining in their eyes when they realized that her memory had failed.

It was these troubling, painful thoughts that had caused the mare to wander, finding the swirling path of stone and grass that led upwards from the Foothills, gracing the side of the beautiful mountains that surrounded her home. The skies were clear, the breeze carried nothing but the scent of fresh air and spring grass, and where once it would have caused the palomino to feel young and revitalized, it did nothing for her wounded spirit. Cresting over the hills, a breeze caressed the mare’s pretty face, brushing the ivory forelock from her gaze in almost a soothing touch. Up here, she could be alone… Up here, in the Heavenly Fields, she could think.

Behind her, little Kasai had remained quiet through their trek from the Windtossed Foothills to the Fields that they stood in now. The tigress’s dark blue eyes stayed locked on Romani’s form, a soft, rumbling meow leaving the confines of her chest. The cub had long-since grown worried for her bonded. It seemed that nothing that she did could pull Romani out of this all-consuming depression. No matter how often she played, or goofed off, or was all around cute, nothing seemed to make Romani smile anymore… The thought saddened the cub, and her black ears lowered slightly, resting against the base of her skull. Through their internal bond, the white tiger sent a caress of her own, a gentle touch of love and adoration, simply to let the Haflinger know that she wasn’t alone.

It was after the message was sent that a tan figure caught the cub’s attention, a sharp contrast to the wonderful green hues of the field. The breeze picked up once more, and with it, carried the scent of the one who stood not too far from where they were. Both Kasai and Romani recognized the smell, for it was that of a friend, someone who was actually remembered and cherished. Levi, the Pegasus stallion who had become a dear friend and who had promised to help her with her memory loss, stood a few paces away, looking just as troubled as Romani felt. Kasai, remembering the games that she and Levi had played in the Sacred Grove, trotted forward, letting out a pathetic little roar to get the stag’s attention.

Spotting the obvious excitement that the cub displayed, the briefest of smiles tugged at Romani’s dark lips and she followed after the enthusiastic tigress, her ears swiveling forward softly. Her eyes, while happy to see Levi once again, held a shade of exhaustion. “Levi, my friend… Oh, it’s so wonderful to see you again.” Her words were true and heartfelt, for it was. It was now, in this time of need that she appreciated having such a friend around… Perhaps he would give her a few moments of her time? “Have you been well, since the last time we crossed paths in the Grove?”

Standing at her forelegs, little Kasai stood still with her tail held high and proud, her nose pointed up at the grullo stallion. A resonating purr emitted from the cub’s bowels, a clear sign that she was happy to see Levi as well. The cub and Haflinger both considered him a close friend.

[OOC: That’s fine, dear. :D <3]

He hates what is in front of him,
But because he loves what is behind him.
