Outside, on the horizon, the sun bled to death in the west and the shadows of mourning clambered in from the east. Within, the darkness deepened. And on the border a white ghost hesitated, drinking in the last rays of sunlight before giving in to the realm of night. And yet he waited, among small, sparse trees with the lavender meadow at his back, head turned out across it. One by one the stars flickered into life, distant and many, brilliant and myriad, dwarfed only as the heavy moon climbed into the sky. Soothing darkness seemed to flock itself around him, as if he took a little piece of the night with him where he stood, and with each passing heartbeat his pupils silvered and color dried from his blue irises. The moon had risen, and this night as all others, gripped his soul.

Mauja didn't know how long he'd stood there, suspended between what felt like life and undeath. Heaving a small sigh the alabaster stallion flicked his white tail, and turned aside from the open expanse. One frosted hoof led the way, followed by the next, leaving a quickly-melting trail in the mild summer night. Winter did not breathe a reminder down his neck this far south, and it saddened him slightly to be cradled only by the warm darkness.

The trees grew thicker around him, older, sturdier, scarred. He'd not often ventured into the Deep Forest, and the one time he had, he had met two mares, neither quite normal. One guarded, and one insane. That time he'd been lucky enough to find his way to the red pool by the ancient fir, but he knew that it lay deep, much deeper than he was now. Ferns and bracken stood silent vigil in shadows, tangled branches blocking some paths, desolation and sorrow hanging heavy in the air. He was not sure why he had come here tonight, or what he wanted — certainly not to be weighed with more problems and the world's mourning, yet he found it nearly impossible to evade the heaviness of the air. Where his eyes traveled, the trees bore scars, testament to some ancient power which had once resided here — but the question was, was it a power of god-like nature, or the lingering traces of a powerful, but ultimately mortal, cult? He had tried to ask the insane one, but she had offered him no insight, left him thirsting for the water he would never drink. Alone in the darkness, hidden in shadow but painted bright where moon beams filtered down through leaves, Mauja drifted up to one of the trees, and brushed his velvet muzzle against its rough bark.

Wounds and scars.

Luck appeared to favor the wolf on this night, for as he walked through the Dark Forest, his eyes landed upon the alabaster body the the target that he had been told to hunt. Dropping back into the shadows, Osiris tries to remain out of the icy gaze of Mauja the Frostheart. Instead, his mind pulls out toward the wolves which had moved from the Foothills area with him toward the land further south. "I will need your help to secure a target for the Grey, little sister," he says quietly even in the chasms of his mind, feeling the agreement of the wolf without words, looking up at Comadre with a tilt of his head downward to the ground. "Let's go," he says to all in his mind, padded feet taking quick strides forward now, four wolves finding their way on opposite sides of the trees in which the white stallion walks. The unicorn may hear the shuffling of predators, perhaps the whistle of quiet leathery wings as Comadre soars ahead, but they are swift and agile, as well as connected by the mind.

Even if he runs, he will be found. Like a cat chasing a mouse with a broken leg, Osiris is certain that he will bring Mauja back to the Grey in shackles.

The great beast comes to an eventually halt before a tree, and immediately, the wolves begin to tighten their noose. Steadily, the trio of smaller wolves move toward the flank, Comadre taking the right side of the King with a look of stern aggression that was rarely on his friendly face. Were it not for the seriousness of his bonded, perhaps the reptile would have sat back away from the scene. Above all else, though, he was loyal to the wishes of Osiris, and right now, the hybrid wanted to bring Mauja in to speak to his Leaders, for whatever they wished his detainment for. Osiris quickly usurps the left area of Mauja, stepping quietly until his yellow eyes can catch the gaze of the white brute from his profile, a look of calm determination one the face of the brute.

"I am sorry, Mauja," the wolf says with almost dull tone. His golden eyes look apologetic, even as the great hybrid leaps toward the Ice King, throwing the weight of his body toward Mauja's left shoulder, hoping that in surprise the great beast would be unbalanced enough to be knocked over. Simultaneously, the wolf bites at the face of the appaloosa to deter the use of his icy horn on his own face, not that a scar could really worsen the appearance. It would just be a mess to deal with until it healed.

Fate had seemed to smile on the wolf that night.

Predators and prey always lurked in forests, sometimes slipping by quite close without making themselves or their intentions known. The heavy scent of wolf and bear covered the ancient forest, interspersed with lynx and wolverine, deer and hare, and every other creature that thrived in a forest. Crossing the recent tracks of a moose, Mauja thought nothing of the beat of wings, thinking of bats and owls, feeling the quiet contentment of Irma far, far above, where she didn't see the shadows mobilizing, nor hear the beat of their hearts and the hushed rush of their breaths. The white stallion stood before his tree, captivated, brushing his soft muzzle across the coarse, scarred bark. His ears flickered, hearing the pad of paws, his nose feeling the smell of wolf, but aside from a wary gaze into the shadows, he did not stir. They would be on their way, to find easier prey.

How wrong he was.

The shadows solidified, and took the shape of a great wolf, each gray and russet hair tinged silver by moonlight and his eyes nothing but faded fires in the night. Simultaneously a dull voice slipped from its fanged mouth, and Mauja thought, how does he know my name?. "Who are-" the great King said, but then the wolf leaped, and chaos descended. The beast was larger than himself, taller, thicker (or was that just the fur?), but he had teeth and claws Mauja did not possess. A shrill, surprised whinny escaped him as he threw his head up and out the way, rising up on his haunches into a half-rear of surprise. Such a foolish, instinctual way to protect oneself from a wolf your own size. Cold roiled in his belly and darkness claimed his veins and his mind. The earth trembled, and as the wolf's shadow was cast across him, the ice spike thrummed up from the deeps and shot into the world, cold and deadly, but ultimately nothing but a reflex, to protect himself and spear his opponent.

And the next moment, even as he prepared to scramble sideways to the right, the great weight of the beast-wolf collided with his left shoulder. Angling in from above it knocked his weight off-center, and poised upon his hind legs as he were he had no chance to catch himself. With the wolf across him, Mauja hit the soft ground hip-first with a thud, a dull ache spreading through his right thigh and shoulder as he fell down, the smell of predator up in his nose and the image of Osiris mid-leap, dark and terrible with fangs snapping for Mauja's eyes, engraved upon his mind.

On rapid wings Irma flew through the sky, her little heart beating fast, fast, but she was too far away yet to save him from the wolves.

The great sculpture of ice has a face contorted in confused apathy that quickly melts into one of surprise as the giant paws of the hybrid lift to throw his massive figure at the former King of the World to the ground. The world rumbles as the figure of snow begins to fall, and Comadre shrieks in terror that slides a belch of flames over the collapsing back of Mauja toward the spike which rises toward the gut of his beloved companion. The flames eat away at the pointed spear, but the sudden flurry of action sets Osiris on edge. His nostrils flare, his golden eyes widen, but he cannot stop the crushing momentum which draws him ever closer to Mauja the Frostheart.

Fur on fur, flesh against flesh. The tensed muscles of the unicorn balanced so precariously on legs that loose their grip as the massive wolf slams into his side, tossing the stallion to the ground like a ragdoll. The wolf stands upon him with two legs, his hinds rested once more upon the earth and his front standing victoriously on the Mauja as if the glorious brute was little more than Winter's left over snow.

Rushing forward is the scrawny wolf of the pack, so foolishly and anxiously, toward the neck of the former Ice King. Osiris barely has a chance to register what his younger brother is doing before the wolf lopes toward the dangerous spear of the unicorn, letting out a sharp growl from his throat as he looks toward the wolf with surprise, "No!" he calls, a bark toward his friend, but it is too late, for the foolish youngster is already leaping with the excitement of an infant toward the thin ice spear crowning Mauja's head as if it were a fetch stick. In an attempt to keep the youngest of his company away from the violence, Osiris leaps from the body he has discarded on the ground, claws attempting to find purchase on the shoulder of his target as he moves into the air, landing gracefully after a short arc and batting the wolf away with a massive leg.

The formation has scattered, and Osiris quickly turns back around to face the King who would not be caught by surprise twice. He could only hope his movements were fast enough to save the situation now.

Speedy posting duo.. not. ;D

It was not with dignity that the Ice King fell, but with the raw panic of a trapped prey. Time seemed to slow as the ground came closer, until finally he hit it with a dull thud and knew that he was trapped. Air rushed out of his mouth in a grunt, followed by a gasp as he desperately tried to refill his empty lungs. Paws, stained with the dirt of a creature dwelling in a forest, rested upon his side, a heavy weight to keep him down, right side cradled by the soft green moss. His left eye rolled up, briefly fastening on the dark sky before finding the outline of the massive wolf. No regular wolf would dare attack Mauja and get away with it, but this was not a regular wolf, it was a beast of the darkness and the noise of its growl rumbling through the night was enough to make the fallen unicorn thrash. Breathing heavily through gritted teeth the desire to fight and survive broke through the stunned haze of terror, and he struggled frantically against the wolf's weight, trying to roll over so he could get up, but how could he possibly succeed when the thing weighed just as much as he did? Nor could he reach it, even as he lifted his head off the ground, and with every passing beat of his heart, every breath slipping in and out of wide nostrils, the rim of white around his eyes grew brighter. He was trapped, well and truly trapped, even as he squirmed and tried to somehow worm his way around so he could kick the wolf's hind legs out from under it using his own...

But a bark rang through the clearing and with a push that shoved Mauja roughly down and forced another grunt of him the massive creature took off, leaving scratch marks upon his dirt-stained shoulder. He wasted no time, took no moment to thank lucky stars or breathe out in relief. As fast as he could Mauja rolled over on his belly and scrambled up, arching his neck so the point of his horn faced Osiris, a clear warning as he tried to get his bearings and put a good ten or so yards between them. He saw the moonlight glitter upon more eyes and teeth, and his memory told him there had been a dragon, and he could smell sulfur in the air.. the beast had spoken, so clearly he was not a barbaric idiot, but what the hell did he want? Breathing rapidly he tried to calm the frenzied thudding of his heart, and for some reason fought down the urge to flee. Now that he was up, surely he could get away if the thing attacked again.. unless he had a grizzly friend hidden nearby. With heaving sides Mauja stood his ground, though restlessly, always shifting his weight or lightly stepping on the spot, ready to bolt. He could only hope this wolf liked to play with his food before he ate it, and that it would allow him time to get away. Should he take just a single step closer.. Mauja would definitely take some backwards, to keep a healthy distance between them. Even he was not a complete moron.

Silent small paws bring wolves to follow Mauja even as he scrambles up, Osiris paying the most attention to the small, foolish wolf who had tried to grasp at the sword clinging to the face of the great Ice King. The female wolf follows the movements of the unicorn in the shadows, trying to stay well out of his sight on quiet feet. After all, they had already committed this much energy toward the capture of this target, why would she allow him to walk free from the grasp of her brother?

Osiris barks at the smaller wolf who cowers behind him now, pivoting back to face the stallion who points his horn threateningly at the hybrid. The wolf smiles, serrated teeth appearing behind fleshy lips. "With all due respect, sir," he says, his baritone voice calm, strong, even as he lets out a breath from the effort of sudden movements, surely not like the shuddering of the Friesian's chest. "You are far outnumbered here." From Osiris's side, the larger of his three companions growls, normally the most silent. Making sure that the distance doesn't close too far for him to get a running lope after the brute before he slipped from his vision, he remains a calm posture.

"You should save us both the effort and just follow me obediently." Persuasion has never been a strong point for the wolf, unfortunately, but he was going to grow weary if Mauja really made him chase his ivory ass around this forest. In the darkness, Comadre hovers above the scene, watching the movements of the Ice King carefully, much like the shewolf along the forest floor. "What do you say, Mauja? Will you become prisoner of the Grey?"

He could hear the rustle of their paws, the soft sway of a branch disturbed by a gray flank; he could hear it, but they were so soft, so subtle, he didn't know how many.. one, or more? Wide-eyed he threw his head up to stare into the shadows, but the moon's light didn't reach the dark forest floor and wherever the wolf, or wolves, was, remained hidden. Something like a curse sat just behind his teeth, each exhalation forceful but gradually slowing, even if his feet did not. He danced lightly on the spot, tensing momentarily as the great beast turned to face him again. As the predator's gaze locked on him again, he wondered why he wasn't running — why he was here, toying with his own life. Fishing for information. He blinked, listening to his voice. So oddly cultivated, coming from such a savage mouth, and he felt his own movements grow still for a moment. One frosted hoof rose to stomp down onto the moss, his tail giving a swish of defiance even as he ignored the lurch in his prey-heart at the growl.

The wolf-beast went on, and Mauja's ears flattened for a moment. His light dance had resumed, and somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that she was coming but her hunt had taken her far, she was not fast enough, but she was coming and no one could save that bastard if he so much as curled another of Mauja's hairs... Irma's vehement rage burned brightly in the back of his skull, and as Osiris demanded Mauja become the prisoner of The Grey, he felt his lips curl back. Liquid, frigid darkness seeped through his veins like poison, but he bit it back. Who the hell were The Grey? "No," he replied, his voice a cold sneer; there were at least two wolves apart from the big one, but he had a feeling that if he ran, he'd be surprised.. otherwise Osiris wouldn't be so calm, so confident.

Or would he?

"I might be outnumbered," he ventured in a flippant voice, drawing a half-step closer, his heart hammering madly in his chest even as his blood cooled. Wings beat in a frenzy. "But am I the weakest here?" And his cold horn dipped a fraction, pointing at the cowering, skulking wolf, the small, scrawny one, and within the gray's chest, the blood of his heart grew colder and colder. Ice was in his veins, and Mauja's gaze sharpened, one corner of his mouth curling upward.

The flat rejection and sudden fire in the stallion who was flittering away like a scared girl a moment before makes Osiris's ears flick back in annoyance. Was he not just slowing the inevitable at this point? Still, before the hybrid could make another pounce, the stallion of ice and snow was beginning to speak again, his voice cool and decisive, reminding Osiris much of the Winter winds. Questioningly, a brow raises upon the large wolf's face, even as Kaya moves to sidle along the side of the Frostheart, crouching low in the brush to keep her out of sight. Those words, a forewarning to the large beast, do not immediately seem as a threat. It is not until the yelp from behind the great wolf rings out that Osiris understands what the bastard means.

The little wolf, hardly even full grown, continues to cower, but not due to the harsh bark of Osiris, but out of pain. Curling inward, he falls, and it is then that the female lets out a tearing growl before the hybrid stallion even has time to react. Launching herself from the shadows, she aims her teeth at the delicate flesh of Mauja's back, right cannon, attempting to clutch onto it and tear the crucial muscles and render him lame. Mouth agape, dumbly, the brute looks behind him toward the squealing wolf being aided by the much larger of his remaining pack, the normally steadfast elder male giving a gentle nudge to the boy's face. His family in pain. His family. The ones who had saved him from the jaws of death. From the skies, Comadre sails down to clutch the youngest male wolf protectively from whatever curse Mauja has placed upon him.

Looking back toward Mauja, Osiris has finally caught up to reality. In his chest, a growling rumble raises. "I will drag you back as a corpse, you bastard!" The voice, normally so calm and collected, sounds wildly feral, brutish, deep, guttural even. The growl ringing from his throat continues, and he too launches his body forward, caring not for delicacy anymore. Damned be the order from the Grey, for Ophelia will not be able to speak with Mauja if he has his way. A lumbering body springs forward on agile limbs, aiming to slam into the left shoulder of the bastard Ice King, sharp teeth biting without mercy toward the left side of the brute's face. Today, Osiris thought he had been simply lucky. Now, he may end up leaving a murderer.

Somewhere, he knew that retaliation had been a mistake, that he should've run, not provoked — but something in his blood had awoken, demanding some kind of mayhem, and his soul grew so cold he wondered why the air wasn't freezing. It had been so long since the blood had thrummed this way in his veins, so long since the darkness had wrapped itself like an old, familiar friend around his mind. Rationality was soothed by crooning whispers, thrill shooting through him at the sound of the wolf's pain. He could learn to like this.

But then, the shadows moved. He'd known she was out there, she or someone else, but not exactly where. There was no way he could've prepared himself fully — growling, brandishing fangs, she came flying and he let out a mindless roar. Magic-mad or not, she was still a god damn wolf and he an idiot. Dancing on the spot he lurched sideways, instinct driving his feet unnecessarily high. In the flurry of movement he loosened his connection with the scrawny wolf, the ice in his blood melting, and his right hind shot up but not before her teeth had latched onto his pastern. "Tík!" he screamed, feeling her teeth sink into the thin skin; without a thought he kicked out, hard, hoping to hit her hip and pull free of her grip at the same time, and pain be damned. Barely touching it down he twisted his hips to the right, and send both hind hooves flying, just in case he hadn't shaken her off yet. Blood marred the white, trailing down his feathers, and he vaguely heard the physical echo of Irma's shrill call. She was, in no uncertain terms, pissed off.

And so was the blasted half-wolf. What the hell had he attacked the scrawny one for? "You wish," he snarled in response, grasping at whatever straws he had and backpedaling for a moment. It was no good, each step with his right hind an erratic twitch, he couldn't hold his weight on it, least of all since the damn thing came flying on his left.. Spitting out some curse in a foreign tongue he made a move to the right, bracing on his left hindleg; fleet-footed despite his injury, he scrambled to align them more head to head, and the wolf slammed into his front, though Mauja's horn passed on the wolf's left. A strangled cry escaped him at the impact, all dignity forgotten in the face of his half-tattered rage; pushed back by the force his quivering left hindleg threatened to give way, and teeth snapped for his neck and face. Jerking aside, hopping to the right he tried to spin away, each burning sensation across his cheek and crest testament to ripped skin and blood-filled gashes, but nothing caught hold. Vindictive, Mauja arched his neck to the left and tried to stab the monster between the ribs or in the gut, one ear listening through the flurry for sounds of the wolves, but they were so damn silent he might as well try to see shadows in the dark.
