He couldn’t sleep.
Nestled upon the ground, warm and snug against his slumbering twin, Luken had been kept awake by the youthful adventures that played through his mind, the deep chocolates of his eyes roving over the misty trees that he called home. Of course he had explored and played during the daylight, but never at night time… Idly he wondered what it might be like.
It was that very thought that spurred him to slip away from his sister and away from the watchful eyes of Tor and Destrier, long, gangly legs moving as quiet as he was able. Oh, he didn’t like leaving Laila behind… Not at all, for he loved her and cherished her maybe even more than he loved his own parents. After all, his darker half had been with him since the day he was born, and they had shared many adventures together… Yet, as small, pale hooves took him further away from his twin and slumbering parents, Luken couldn’t help but feel invigorated by the newfound freedom of simply being alone.
The pale colt gave a toss of his head once it was deemed safe and pulled back onto his rear-haunches, front hooves leaving the ground for only a few moments. The pink-ish hues of his hooves glistened in the moonlight, and a childish cackle left the colt’s throat without much thought. With the moon as his guide, the bright rays shining through the thick canopy of trees and cutting through the dense mists that rose up from the surrounding ocean, Luken began his first adventure alone, set at a brisk trot.
There were all kinds of new sights and smells that he hadn’t noticed before, scents that belonged to those that dwelled in darkness, but the draft-mutt was far from afraid. After all, his father was a Protector of the Edge; strong and resilient, and unafraid of threats. Luken, while considerably smaller in size and bulk, counted himself to be the same. He was a fighter, a warrior.
Arching his neck slightly, the colt continued weaving through the trees, until his chocolate eyes were enraptured by something so exotic that he paused mid-stride, narrowly avoiding tripping over a protruding root of the thick tree beside him. A glow of rainbows is what first caught his attention, and then a creamy, pale form, rearing upwards towards the moon as if dancing. For a moment, fear entered the colt’s mind, but it was quick to slide away as mystery and pure wonder overcame it. What… What was he looking at?
The figure that danced in the moonlight was simply divine, far more beautiful than anything Luken had yet to see. She moved with grace despite her nimble and lithe legs, the pales hues of her body showing remarkably in the spot-light of the moon. But what truly captivated him was the horn poised upon the filly’s head; a horn. Oh, he had never seen an equine with a horn before!
Taking a tentative step forward, the colt found his head lowering, eyes remaining upon the filly’s form. He inhaled, swallowing her scent… It was unfamiliar and didn’t smell of the Edge, but… He was a warrior, a knight, and had no reason to worry or be afraid.
“… Do you dance to the moon all the time?” Came the first question from his mouth, stopping a few paces from where she stood. The colt’s whisker’s twitched slightly, pale body splotched with black less radiant than the fae’s pearlescent coat. She was quite a sight to behold…
