To the Moon and Back

He felt like he was flying through space. Everywhere he gazed with is black eyes there were stars - above, in front and also under him they twinkled and he imagined that they sounded like little bells chiming far, far away. He would have lost his bearings if it hadn’t been for the silvery shine of the moon helping him to make out the slight movement of the ocean under him. That very same ocean mirrored the sky and gave him the feeling of sailing through dark, endless space. But he loved it, he loved every little thing with flying at night and especially when the night was this clear with a big, round moon stripping his coat color of its saturation. In daylight he was creamy with pristine white hair, but under se moon he appeared silver and on his wings and back small silvery flecks was lit up by the pale light. It almost looked like he also was reflecting the stars, just like the waters beneath him.

The pegasus stallion was young, almost not old enough to be without his parents. But is loneness was involuntary though he’d lost them both. His mother, Ru’yah, died when he was just weaned, six months old and he mourned a long time together with his father. His father - Al-Shahin; the handsome, poised Arabian equine raised him well from that point, but they got separated in a terrible storm half a year after Ru’yah’s death. For months the young pegasus searched for his father, but eventually he had do give up. He missed them both deeply, but the loss of his father hurt the most since it was more recent and also because of the possibility of him still being alive.

He’d left the ocean far behind him now and with the help of the moon he could see a dense forest spread out under him. Here and there he could see darker areas in the forest and a faint smell of ash and coal tickled his sensitive nostrils. He became intrigued, wondering what strange land he’d ventured into so he started beating his wings against the air current collecting wind beneath them to keep in the same place as he searched for a good place to land. His black eyes reflected the stars as he gazed down and found a clearing. Carefully he angled forward, tilting his right wing so that he started a slow spiraling decent towards the dark trees. Silently like an owl he neared the ground. When he had just a yard left he spread his broad wings as much as he could and pushed the air towards the ground. His decent almost ground to a halt, but his landing became so soft that a baby deer that was sleeping in the yellow grass, just a few feet away, didn’t even stir.

The clearing was not a natural one. It had been created by a wildfire and the trees around it where blackened and the smell of ash was very prominent. The young stallion gazed up towards the circle of stars that he was able to see above the tall trees and then he turned his eyes towards the darkness of the forest. He already longed to fly under the silver moon again, but when he prepared his barn owl wings to lift a scent of something besides ash caught his attention. Horses. These were inhabited lands! His nostrils widened, ears pricked up and an excited nigh murmured in his throat.
"I’m here!" he whispered into thin air. "I am Breeze!"

A sickly aroma permeated the atmosphere: the thick, intoxicating scent of smoke and charred foliage. The damage had - without the slightest hint of dubiety - been wrought by a licking flame, undoubtedly the product of the Sun God's wrath. The crisp, dehydrated vegetation that mantled Helovia had become much like a massive tenderbox, patiently awaiting the next spark of lightning or flash point to ignite into a blazing inferno.

Despite the darkness and fleeting reign the moon held over the world, the infliction induced by the oppressing sun was still quite prevalent. The heat, however, remained throughout the hours of darkness as a mere inkling of the intensity it held during the day. It provided the children of Helovia with a compelling - however brief - reprieve.

The roan dame cherished it. She had always been drawn to moonlight, to the stars. It was the time in which her magic evoked the most potency, her astral creations enlivened and farther repleted with artificial life. To Cassiopeia, they were living. She was simply the outlet to which their aliveness was revealed to the world, endowed with all their rightful beauty and ethereal appeal. And so it was only natural that she had chosen to animate another celestial companion to accompany her on this night - one not so often summoned from the heavenly forests of space, though far from lacking in grandeur and enthrallment.

It was Lupus, the supernal wolf, crafted by divine hands and composed of all the opalescence and mystery of the cosmos - a mystical creature, running gracefully alongside the dame of stars of wind. It was a melodious cacophony of thrumming hoof beats and the disembodied voice of the wind, whispering gently into slender, lobed ears.

Her legs pumped in the rhythm of a soft canter, her body maneuvering through the palisade of timber with profound ease. There was a supple geometry to the arc of her body, a fish bending through a current. Her eyes were fixed on the terrain before her, heeding every obstacle, but something else as well. There stood a figure, a pale silhouette, its conformations illuminated by the silvery light of the moon. Intrigued, she slowed her pace.

Lupus ahead of her, she made her way toward the stranger, curiously watching him. With an echoing howl - more anomalous than one composed by a terrestrial wolf - he withdrew his body from the clearing, Cassiopeia following not far behind. She dipped her head, her eyes never leaving the pale steed. "Greetings." The ghostly eyes of the lupine creature at her hooves were fixed upon the stranger, though not dangerously. "Welcome to Helovia."

For a brief moment the night was still and empty around the colt. Despite his excitement of being in inhabited land he suddenly felt very lonely. The stars, which were usually his friends, seemed to have a colder glow to them and the pale face of the moon didn’t feel quite as loving as he remembered it. Suddenly Breeze missed his parents with an intensity he hadn’t felt since the first month after losing his father in that storm.

Breeze was only one and a half years old, but looking at him, one could easily take him for a three year old because of his mane and tail that was already fully grown and his quite muscular body. He was gangly and a bit angular, but he still didn’t look his age. With time he would fill out even more though and his hair would probably be very long. But as he stood there, colored silver by the moon, he looked almost like an adult horse - even though he felt like a little lonely foal.

Then suddenly the night seemed to stir and Breeze got the impression that some of the stars above him came to life. He couldn’t explain his feelings and because no one had told him anything about magic he didn’t understand the somewhat eclectic vibe that pulsated through the night. His hairs stood on end and he half unfolded his wings - ready to take off if needed.

The winged mare and the starry wolf entered the clearing almost behind Breeze and the colt almost felt like he had a heart attack. He spun around, black eyes widened and hair and feathers affray. When he saw the lupus he first felt scared, but then he smiled as he recognized the star pattern of its ethereal body. Intrigued he took a few steps towards it and tried to get its scent. The voice of the mare distracted him though and he turned to her.

"Good Evening, ma’am.” Breeze answered and bowed his head. ” I hope I’m not intruding on your territory."
He looked around and smelled the air again. Helovia? Could that be the name of the country or was it the name of just this forest?

Looking back at the dark mare he said: "My name is Breeze, son of Al-Shahin. What may I call you, ma’am?"

It hadn't been her intention to startle the pale knight, but even so he seemed to have been caught off guard by the suave narrative of her voice. She offered nary a reaction to his brash movements save for an apologetic nod of her head, her ears tipped forward in an attentive expression as the stallion spoke. It seemed a common contingency for newcomers to interpret this as a claimed territory. It was owned by no one individual; traveled by many and dominated by none.

With a annulling shake of her head, she sought to enlighten this newcomer. "Not at all. You stand within Neutral lands - the Threshold." It was that he chose to speak once again, offering her his name. "A pleasure." She affirmed, a genuine smile evinced upon her charred kissers. "You may call me Cassiopeia."

Lupus sat quietly at the hooves of the dark mare, watching the stranger intently. Perhaps he was an eerie sight for one whom had never witnessed such a celestial being rejuvenated with life, but then again the stranger had thus far evidenced no such opinions. He appeared to regard the creature only with inquisitiveness, which she, of course, could understand. The stars were always fascinating. "Do you come in search of a herd?"

She was very polite, just like Breeze himself, and a shy smile tugged on his lips. Maybe she could be his friend, someone to talk to, finally after months of solitude and silence. She was about the age his mother had been if she had been alive still, but she didn’t resemble Ru’yah in any other way. Still he desperately wanted someone who could take care of him. Just for a little while, until he felt like an adult again. What he really needed was a father figure. A stallion who could teach him to be a bit tougher, but Breeze had always been a mama’s boy.

He shook the thoughts from his head and watched the star-wolf again. What could it be? Surely it wasn’t a living, breathing creature. Or was it?

Cassiopeia spoke and he listened with his black eyes still settled on the lupus. But when he answered he faced the mare. "A herd? Maybe. I don’t know. I’m a bit lost, you see but I have nowhere to go, really. Do you come from a herd Lady Cassiopeia?"

His eyes again wandered to the star creature. It was so weird to see his friends from the sky assembled into a being walking so far below the great heavens. "Forgive me Lady Cassiopeia, but what is that? It can’t be a living creature, can it? How did it get here?"

He did not immediately reject her assumption - this she was gladdened by - but neither did he affirm it. He seemed uncertain, but she offered the response to his query easily. "Indeed. I call the Dragon's Throat my home." She paused, a swift instant rushing by as her nostrils flexed with a soft exhale. "Our ranks are occupied by mostly those of winged blood, but we are accepting of all species." Not that it mattered for this bloke. The feathered appendages that projected from his sides meant he could join without Kri's direct consent. If he was racist, however (she knew others who were, though she didn't understand why) then the information would perhaps be useful to him.

"Magic." She answered simply. "I was blessed with the ability at a young age - from birth, actually." She wondered if this stallion knew of such things as magic; of the supernatural powers wielded by a select few individuals roaming Loorien. Where she came from, magic was far more rare than it was in Helovia and the Gods also less physically present. That was the explanation for such a scarcity of those powers, she supposed. Maybe this pale stud had come from a similar environment? "And it depends on how you look at it: he is alive in the sense that he can move and think and interact with those around him," She paused briefly, her gaze settling upon the star wolf's celestial features. "Yet he is not in the sense that within his chest there beats no heart of flesh."

Did this creature have a spirit; a soul? Did a heavenly body of gas and opalescent light possess such an immaterial quality? Doubtful, she thought, though she occasionally enjoyed believing otherwise. It would appear as though each constellation had their own unique personality, a characteristic sway to their actions and motives. Sure, she could conduct them to do as she wished, but when she just let go, when she didn't focus on directing their movements, it was as if they were real - as if they obtained a soulful embodiment.

Magic could be a difficult thing to comprehend at times. She herself was not entirely certain how her astral magic truly functioned. She only knew that the stars which assembled her creations were many light-years away from their rightful place in the void of space when they were summoned, and it was through her that their true majesty was unveiled to the creatures of the world. When else could anyone interact with an asterism?

Magic? The colt didn’t even understand the word and his confusion completely distracted him from the talk of herds and species. What was magic? Why hadn’t his parents told him about it? Could it be used to hurt him? Where there beings capable of beating him to death with more than their own body and strength? Breeze had always feared to be challenged or forced to fight ever since his parents have told him of racism and what some equines and unicorns would do to pegasi just because the fact that they had wings.

Suddenly he reacted on what the roan mare had told him about the herd. They accepted all species - surely they couldn’t be racist then, right? Maybe it was his best shot to stay out of harm’s way? And if he met horses there who also had magic hopefully they wouldn’t use it against him. He gave the starry wolf a sideways glance - suddenly a bit scared of it again.

"If I am welcome, Lady Cassiopeia…" he said quietly "I would very much like to come home with you. The Dragon’s throat sounds - apart from the name - like a nice place."
A shy smile tugged on the boys lips and he took a small step towards the mare and the wolf.

The confusion that shrouded his facade was all too clear. She tilted her head as she watched him, thoughts evidently reeling through his mind. The way he suddenly regarded the celestial wolf - who had then begun to investigate the pale stallion by sniffing his forelegs harmlessly - was a bit surprising. The sudden change in his mannerism toward the creature articulated his unfamiliarity with magic: that was the only reason she could assemble.

She then smiled as he accepted her offer, his voice quiet, yet affirmative. "You will certainly be welcomed by my herd, Breeze. We are always in need of new members." She trailed off, pondering if this stallion would consider being a soldier.

She decided to leave the subject alone. If he so desired, she was sure he would receive the rank if he addresses Kri on the matter. At that moment, however, she needed to acquaint him with his new home. Ranks could be discussed at a later time. "Follow me." She said with a sideways jerk of her head. And with that, she pivoted on her hind leg and continued off into the forest, a shadowy veil settling over her as she expected Breeze to follow.

Lupus, upon discovering that the roan dame was leaving the area, zealously sprang toward her, a deep, muffled woof sliding past his lips. He trotted in front of her, following the path to the Dragon's Throat while being subconsciously guided by the joint internal compass imparted upon him by his equid companion.

The night was silent, the ocean a hushed whisper in the wind. Diedre had her ears perked foreward as she watched the ocean sway back and forth from the rocks of the cliff. Her green eyes ablazed, watching in interest, as if the ocean was telling her a wise old tale.
The salty sweet scent of the ocean was then hinted with the other scent of...horses? How odd. Everytime she saw the ocean, she never seen horses.
Turning slightly from the cliff's edges, to the forest behind her. She gave a small whinny, as she turned around and galloped off the cliff, her silky black wings appearing in a swirl of black smoke upon her back. She swiftly picked up the wind with her black feathers, and turned a sharp left before flying towards the other end of the threshold. After a few minutes of flying, she gracefully landed, to see a small colt, and a mare who seemed to be in deep conversation.
"I-Im sorry to intrude." Diedre said, her voice a soft choir of windchimes. Her green eyes lighted as she looked at both mare and young stallion.

[Ooc; Diedre this thread is kind of closing now. Breeze is following Cass to the Throat. If you want to be accepted in a herd you can make your own threshold-thread and see if someone picks you up, or you can post directly in the herdland you want to live in :)]
