"Ma? Pa?" Her voice quaked with uncertainty as the timid filly stepped forward and meandered through the unfamiliar trees. "Where are you?" Now there was genuine fear, sorrow, and perhaps a hint of hopelessness. Eldrinn had not found her parents, nor heard them, since she had first woken up so many days ago in the threshold. She was a stranger in a strange land, alone and without comfort.

With ivy eyes that swam with tears she pressed herself against one of the trees, feeling the force that flowed beneath its rough surface, and yet hearing nothing of the warm voices she ached for. "Ma! Pa!" She pleaded in a whisper as her head drooped and she peered out over this place. She did not know it, did not love it - how could she? - and wished for her parents most desperately.

Ely, it was the smallest brush of a voice, a tiny tickle that made her lift her head and wonder if she had heard anything at all. Ely, we are always here, more of the whispers; Ely held her breath and closed her eyes and strained to hear more.

A leaf fell and draped across her nose and finally she smiled. It was a bright smile, brilliant, and she curled around the trunk of the tree and murmured a silent thanks. They were here - that was all she needed - she was not alone.

Now, all she needed was a friend...

The sound of her heart beating within her chest was something magical to the small filly. She had only encountered the small orb of light at her side a few days ago and since then she had been adamant about bringing it everywhere she went. Sometimes she fancied simply carrying it about between her teeth while other times she was more inclined to roll it around with her hooves. Whatever it took, the orb went with her wherever her heart desired.

Today was no different, for the orb had taken its place betwixt her pearly whites and she was quite proud to have it there. She carried it happily through the shadows of the forest despite the heavy mist clinging to her sides. She had grown used to the terrain and no longer found it difficult to see despite the veil of white. Sometimes she even favored its presence on days when the heat was nearly suffocating; it seemed to drench in her a fine dewy coat of moisture that kept her cool when she played within the shade of the forest.

Today seemed to be no different, considering she had once again found herself wandering away from both mother and father to explore the wide berth of the Edge. Her pallid eyes were wide with humor which wasn’t entirely something out of character for her considering she seemed to be amiable enough on most days. Aside from the few occasional fits, she was a mild-mannered youth that admired the beauty in life and today was no exception.

As she pounded through the trees, her orb clutched firmly between her jowls, an excited shrieking filled the humid air. Whatever she had planned to do with the little ball of light was clearly something brilliant because she hadn’t been so excitable in the past few days for fear that she might upset the little spark of life. However, it wasn’t long until she was skidding to an alarmed halt. Before her, an older foal stood speaking quietly to the trunks of the tall pines of the Edge.

Essetia called out to her in hopes of acquainting herself before realizing that she had indeed, already been acquainted. This other girl had been in the Threshold the day that her father had taken her in to see the land. Admittedly, she couldn’t remember much of that day but she made sure to memorize the other’s scent in case it was ever one that she would need to call upon again.

She had been right to do so however, because even now, the other filly looked as if she’d aged over the past few weeks. There was a desolateness about her that spoke of weary sadness but it was all Essetia could do not to chortle happily to her in hopes of erasing all traces of her uncertainty. This place was full of brilliant wonders, Essetia knew, and it just took time and patience for once to recognize them. After all, she had found her little ball of light while traversing the dips and swells of her home.

There was magic here and even if this other filly didn’t understand that yet, Essetia would make sure that she wouldn’t forget it.
