Our worlds were never meant to touch

A scent. A strange scent, like nothing she had ever smelled. Few things gave off smells in the water, but up here on land, her nostrils were assaulted by so many foreign scents and sounds her head hurt. She tilted her head up to see a creature approaching. Alarm raced through her as she shifted, wishing desperately she wasn't beached. It didn't look like a landhoof, but she had never seen one anyway. Besides, anything from the surface world had to be dangerous. It was a medley of browns and whites, with a long mane and a feather that was comfortingly blue woven into it. Instead of being covered in scales or smooth skin, it's whole body appeared to be covered in fur, but much longer than that of a seal. It's face was the most alien part, as were the amber eyes.

The hippocampus gave a frightened snort as the creature circled to sit in front of her. Was it going to eat her? She didn't want to die like this. She wanted the ocean. She wanted her pod.

The thing spoke.

The hippocampus snorted again, this time in surprise. Nobody had ever said surface-dwellers could speak, let alone think. She couldn't totally understand her, but many of the words were familiar. There was a common tongue used by nearly every sentient race, and they tended to shift into it without realizing. While the hippocampi spoke a different dialect, most could make themselves understood to foreigners, even though they deigned not to speak to them. Some of the fear left her eyes, but she wasn't totally off-guard. "Can..can understand." she said shakily. Her voice, like her neigh, was musical and echoing, like flowing water. "Need help. Caught in bad storm and thrown onto the beach." Mustering her strength, she was able to use to tail to push herself onto her belly, folding her legs under her. Her side was caked in wet sand, but at least she could look at the creature easier now. Head hanging, she cast a longing look towards the sea, so tantalizingly close. "I...I need to get back to the ocean." She fixed the wolf with a beseeching look. "Please." Despite her fear, a spark of hope began in her chest.
