 Tolio.</style>

Seasons ago, a cinnamon stallion with a heart of a child had wandered into the Threshold with a purpose. He had been full of purpose, a wild fire that had made him strong and daring. Back then, he had been ready to take on the world. Became a warrior, suffered with his new family in a wasteland that could hardly pass as a home. It had been years, it seemed, since he was that stallion. No longer was he strong, or proud. The roaring flame within his chest had dwindled under an onslaught of rain, turning to a weakly flickering ember. He was no longer the Tolio he remembered.

It had taken a lot of thought for him to decide on what he was about to do. There was so much to be left behind. Faelene, the amazing woman that had found him that day in the woods. She had been his rock through every storm, uncaring of why it was raging. Every day, he thanked the gods above for having placed her in his life. Inside his heart, she had taken up a very large portion, and he called her sister with love in every syllable. More than anyone, perhaps, he would miss her. It would likely be hard for them both to separate. Faelene had been his entire world for the longest time, and losing her would likely hurt him just taking that first step out of Helovia. Tolio didn't want to leave her, but knew he had to. She was the strongest mare he knew, and he knew she would continue on.

Mauja. His king. The spotted Bane had taken him in, greeted and touched him like long-lost brothers. Everything Mauja was, Tolio wanted to be. He was still young, after all. His King had been everything, and Tolio had sworn loyalty to him the moment their eyes had met in the Steppe. That loyalty would never, never break. Even at that very moment, broken so far down from the person he used to be, Tolio would kneel before Mauja without hesitation. The Frost-Heart could utter a single command and Tolio would do it; would drive himself upon his own horn, even. A soldier and his leader, Tolio would forever be there to trumpet Mauja's name into battle, to wear the badge of the Basin upon his hide. That was the only reason he remained. Psyche was not his leader, but he stayed because it was everything Mauja had worked for.

Zikar-Sin. He had become one of Tolio's favorite people, and though he knew he was crushing heavily on the stallion he knew he could never be good enough for the sweet unicorn. Would Sinny miss him? Tolio didn't know. Didn't want to know, really. Zikar-Sin was the sweetest person he'd ever met, so adorably confused by everything around him, and Tolio's chest ached at the thought of hurting him. But with the trouble he always seemed to attract, Tolio had decided that Zikar-Sin was better off without him anyways.

Loki. Though he was flirtatious, he was kind and surprisingly good company once you looked past that. Looked really far past that, of course, but Tolio was grateful nonetheless. He'd been there to effectively get his mind off of Phaedra, of course.

Phaedra.

This name brought the most emotion to his chest. Phaedra had turned his world upside down. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes not so much. For the longest time, she'd been his little sister. Someone to protect. But slowly but surely, he had started to see behind the face she put up to lure in unsuspecting stallions. Saw just how gentle, shy, and loving she could be. He'd never been one to find mares particularly attractive due to his preferences, but somehow she had been his exception. Tolio had never loved anybody more than her, and doubted he ever would. Sometimes he wished he could, that his heart would be free from the turmoil that surrounded his insurmountable love for Phaedra. That, just once, he could be loved back without having to let go of them. More than anything he wanted to be with Phaedra, but he knew they couldn't be. They both knew.

His babies. Twins, according to Faelene. Tolio ached to meet them, but Phaedra had kept them from him. He didn't blame her. He probably would have done the same in her position. But he loved them, even without meeting them. He loved them more than anything else in the world, wished he could press kisses to their foreheads, see which parent they looked like. All he'd wanted in life was a child, and had always thought he would never be gifted with one. Instead, he had received the gift of twins, beautiful baby girls that would be in his heart forever. If Phaedra did not let him see them before he left...it would crush his heart. But he would understand.

Word of the Grey's conquering of the Foothills had spread like wildfire, and so that was what had drawn Tolio to its borders. The scents were slowly shifting, but tired silver eyes cared not for guards possibly patrolling the area. All he wanted was to see his lady, the love of quite possibly his life. Warm sunlight cascaded over the fiery surface of his canvas, broken into spots by the trees overhead. Everything was quiet aside from the rustle of the wind through the branches, a calming melody only sweetened by the beautiful trilling of various birds within. Streaked plume swished rhythmically, if weakly, against snowy legs. Tolio was so very, very tired. He needed to find himself once more, and that was why he had to leave. Helovia had changed him, and he was no longer sure if it was for the better.

Tolio was leaving, and he didn't know for how long.

But he could not leave without telling Phaedra he loved her, that he would miss her. In time, perhaps she would find another. Tolio was not good enough for her. Upon his return, he would bless whomever had managed to steal her true heart, not the one she flaunted around to protect herself. Phaedra deserved love- real, pure love. Would Tolio find love? With a soft sigh, he realized that it was highly likely he would not. Even if he did fall for someone, who would have the patience to tend to his shattered, shredded heart? It would surely hurt less to rip it out himself.

Like a machine slowing to a stop, so his body shuddered and momentum drew away like liquid falling from his coat to the ground below. For a long time he merely stood there, wishing to just turn into particles and be blown away on the wind. Would anybody truly miss him?

Another sigh.

Bald face turned to the sky and he sang out his last song for the lovely being within. He would give her the rest of his heart to keep when he was gone. Tolio secretly feared, even prepared for, the possibility that when he returned it would not still be waiting for him.

Tolio would love Phaedra forever, but he would not chain her to the ground any longer.

 The Return</style>

Drop past the color; come up through the summer rain.</style>

Phaedra had been waiting, and waiting for this moment. Her heart practically felt as though it would burst from her chest, due to the palpable feeling of excitement that coursed through her veins. He was here! She wasn't sure where Tolio had been lately - perhaps they had simply been missing each other? After all, in the aftermath of the Invasion, Phae had been named a member of the intelligence division, along with Osiris, and had been practicing the magic that came with her new role. She had become so adept at going without being unseen in fact, that she had dared venture into the Basin of all places, searching for her lost love. She didn't find him on that day, but what she had found, was Faelene along with her new daughter. Incredible as that might have seemed, it was only a distant impression upon her mind, dulled by the ache of having not found her cinnamon stallion. She often thought of venturing to the Woods, on the chance that he hadn't heard of the Grey's invasion of the Foothills, thinking perhaps she would find him there - or on the beach, even. But their daughter's were far too young for so much movement, especially during Phae's curse. So, she had stayed mainly in the Foothills, hoping for this day to come.

And here it was.

Her golden head rose immediately as she heard the sound of his call on the breeze. She felt as nervous as a filly, as if her years of wooing and displaying herself in front of stallions had suddenly slipped from her mind. Her gaze dropped to her chest, then turned to inspect her wings and flanks to ensure that no dust or dirt had accumulated on her immaculately golden coat. Although her curse had ended, and her body had returned to normal, Phae still felt as though she wanted to look better, to dazzle Tolio in ways he had never been before. Biting her lip as a thought occurred to her, Phae lightly danced forward, up and over a small knoll that separated them, and into view.

Waves of creamy mane flitted about her slender form, as she pranced down the small incline. Her wings were held lightly to her slender body, billowing at her sides with each step she took. As her sea-green gaze fell upon him, any pretense of flirtation or feigned-coyness disintegrated, as a wide smile broke out across her golden face, and a silvery laugh bubbled from her throat. Excitement seemed to well in her chest, causing her to feel as though she wanted to both cry out, and laugh all at the same time. Galloping towards him now, unable to contain herself any longer, she bridged the distance between them. As she neared, the idea which had struck her earlier took hold, and with another jubilant laugh, Phae unleashed her magic.

Phaedra knew that Tolio already loved her, and that her magic would not have the same effect upon him, as it might on others, but she hoped it would soothe the part of him that lusted after stallions, and that questioned them being together for political reasons. She wanted his heart to be light and his mind at ease. A sheen broke across her golden body, almost like a sweat, and yet it was not. Pinpoints of light, which disappeared if you tried to look at them directly, glistened across her coat like thousands of tiny stars. She seemed amplified somehow, as if someone had turned the vibrancy of her up, by 100%. The light in her sea green eyes, now appeared like a dazzling aura, and each of her odd bird-catcher spots, now seemed like perfectly crafted and placed beauty marks upon her slender body.

"Tolio!" She cried out as soon as she was close enough, daintily coming to a halt before him. Tossing her head lightly, sending a cascade of silken mane down her chest, she beamed up at the cinnamon stallion.

Won't you sing to me your poetry,
Won't you take me to your home,
Won't you be for me forever
So I'll never be alone

Almost as if she has been waiting for his call to touch her ears, Phaedra takes little time in showing her beautiful face. It was like they were meeting for the first time all over again, and the sober look of resignation disappeared as if she were the sunlight thawing out all the cold he felt in his heart. Every time, he tried valiantly to hold on to the darker feelings of depression, anger, desolation. It was so much easier than feeling the insurmountable love he held for her. Knowing he couldn't have her, would drag her down with him into a pit of despair if he tried to be with her. Part of him wanted so badly to ask her to run away with him, but also knew with a deep resonating sadness that she would not accept. He just wanted to take his family, the family he couldn't have, and whisk them all away where they could love and be safe, where nobody could judge them or threaten them. So instead, he allowed himself to be influenced by the warmth she exuded without even trying. Even cursed, he'd been powerless against the beauty that not many people could see. It took a lot of work and persistence to get past those walls and see how perfect she was.

Smile rose to caress snow bleached face, seeing her lithe form careen elegantly over the grass towards him. Light seemed to warp around her for a moment, and Tolio blinked dumbly, wondering if the sunlight had changed on him and flashed him a bit too heavily. Phaedra looks different, but his mind can't truly comprehend why or what has changed about her. Sure, the darkness in his attitude is lifted past heights her normal presence didn't push it to, and her coat seems to have been embedded with beautiful shy diamonds that evade his gaze, but all he feels is an overwhelming desire to run to her and take her in his grasp and shower her with the love that she deserves. That he so desperately wishes he could give her. Her own grin glowed brightly upon her delicate face, and a laugh like the purest of snow trailed over to him on the warm air. His own stretched wider, and yet he could find no words when faced with her brilliance.

And yet...what was stopping him from running and embracing her? Already her palomino legs were bringing her to him, and so he embraced the joy and drove his own pillars forward at a light, exuberant jog to meet her. From her lips tumbled his name, and it had never sounded sweeter. Something felt just a little off, but he ignored it. The seriousness he wanted to show had vanished, and instead as she stood nearly glowing before him, Tolio allowed himself to let the blanket of pure devotion settle over him. Moving closer he made the first move, touching his muzzle to hers and inhaling softly, slowly. She smelled of honeysuckle and fresh rain, and it soothed what nerves were left. Just as gently he exhaled, and stepped forward with no sign of hesitation that normally appeared in their previous meetings. And suddenly, with the inhibitions that normally encased his heart gone, Tolio was overwhelmed with the simple need to touch. To shower, absolutely drown Phaedra in love, in worship. "Oh Phaedra," he crooned, deep in his throat so that it made his chest shake with vibrations. He moved until their breasts touched, wishing he could feel her heartbeat against him. Every inch of her side he caressed, kissed, revered. She was a golden canvas waiting for his touch to paint her with any color he could imagine. Feathers were ghosted over, flanks nudged, spine traced with such adoration it was as if he were worshiping a goddess. Over and over her name spilled from his lips, and he'd never felt so free before. In the far edges of his mind, he knew he brought sombre news. But...with all his worries stripped away, Tolio didn't even want to think about telling her that he had to leave. "I love you...I missed you...Phae, my love," he crooned, never losing physical contact with her. She smelled of love, safety. She smelled of home.

She was home, his magnetic North to which he would always return.

As his words rang in her ears, and his chest collided with her own, any and every trouble in her world melted away without a second thought. Nothing made, save for Tolio - wasn't that always the way? Although Tolio was not a physically large stallion by any means, the place that he took in her heart and her mind, positively left no room for any other thought or impulse to invade, save for the desire to stay as close to him as possible. The vibrations of his words, through his chest and into hers was a sound more calming that anything she had ever known. He could be saying anything, and she would listen endlessly to the muted buzzing of him against her. There was something organic and beautiful about being able to sense him with more than one faculty at a time - to be able to both hear and feel his words as he spoke her name.

"My darling" She whispered back, pressing her muzzle against him and squashing the words into his glistening coat. "My darling, my love, my Tolio" She continued, as she felt his touches move from her chest, to her sides and flanks. How she adored him - how she adored him! A laugh caught in her throat, and for a blissful moment, she wanted both to scream his name, and laugh all at the same time. She felt colour rise in her cheeks as tears glistened in the corners of her eyes as the emotion welled within her breast and throat. Turning to watch him as he moved down the length of her golden hide, she couldn't help the beaming smile upon her lips.

"Oh how I've missed you! But just look what we've done, sugar. Just look!" Extending a wing to indicate the land around them, her beaming smile was replaced with one of pride. While she had not fought in the Invasion, due to the twins, she had captured a prisoner which had reduced the number available to fight against her Grey-family. "The girls have a home! They can stay with me and-" Her breath caught in her chest as she lowered her voice, hardly able to contain the excitement. "And no one will have to know. Tolio don't you see! The Basin doesn't have to know!"

Of course the golden-girl didn't know of the other troubles that plagued her darling-love, and now that he was here and saw the new home the Grey had forged, surely there would be no stopping them now. She would understand if he stayed in the Basin - they weren't exactly an exclusive item - but knowing that their daughters wouldn't cause any stress, or have to grow up amongst the dangers of the Basin, was a cause for celebration.

Right?

Flashing him another dazzling smile, she breathed softly against him. Everything was perfect. Stella was with the girls, and Tolio was here, in the lands of the Grey. Nothing could spoil this moment.

Nothing.

Like a sweet, exotic flower, Phaedra was both beautiful and alluring in every sense. Her scent, her voice, her body. Every part of her sang out to him, drew him in. Even when she had been cursed and aged, destroyed by the magic of the Moon Goddess, Tolio had loved her more than he had thought was physically possible for a soul to give. In that moment, he baffled at himself. Why had he kept pushing her away? Perhaps because of the complications, but still. All Tolio ever wanted was Phaedra. She deserved to be made a queen, not for her looks and flirtatious behavior, nor her abilities in gathering intelligence. Deep down he believed her to be far more beautiful inside than out. How many others had been able to look past her stunning looks to see the soul he knew more intimately than anything else? Rage flushed through him like a fever at the thought that any other male could have seen the beauty that belonged rightfully to him. It was wrong for him to think of her as his possession, for she was not, but he loved her so fiercely he would likely be thrown into a rage should he discover any other stallion had seen that delicate flower folded secretively beneath the brilliant outside petals that made the mask she hid behind. Her beauty.

Anger could not last in her presence. As she crooned like the sweetest dove right back to him, he wished he had wings with which to wrap her in like a precious parcel, like she had done so many times to him. Instead he spread kisses and caresses along her flank, her spine, the curve of her rump, the muscles that curved into her wings. Lightly nibbling, grooming in any other fashion but meant more as an intimate gesture of love. Without the few worries and insecurities in his heart, the borders he had put up before coming, his love had no wall with which to stop his love. It poured out of him, desiring only to lay in the stitching of her skin, to leave her permanently with a new perfume. One made of his own passion, his own devotion and adoration. Phaedra was his queen, his exception. The one mare who had ever enticed, infuriated, seduced, confused, hurt, loved, hated him. Made him feel so many emotions he'd never even imagined. She had taken the life he thought he had fully lived, and shown him that there was so much more. That so many more feeling lived within him that had yet to be unleashed. She had taken him, and she had burned him in the most delicious way. Set fire to his very marrow and in it, he reveled in the spectrum she had painted for the both of them. Now, he wanted to burn with her forever.

Would she even be willing to accept him at this point? After all the trials they had weathered? But her words soothed any worry he had, and as he traced the feathers of her wings lovingly he knew he could never love another. Phaedra had taken his heart and given him love to hold its place until the day she withered away. Even then his heart would be lost with her to the world beyond, for he could hardly bear the thought of marring her memory by taking another. Their endearments passed like rose petals from sugar-kissed lips, sweetening the very land with love so powerful Tolio could hardly contain it. Her clear excitement told him that this was important, and so he paused in his worship of the temple of her body and turned to face her once more. Diamonds glittered softly, happily, in sea-foam eyes he would never forget. His own broad smile could not be contained, beaming out to join hers. Happiness swelled so large in his chest he feared he'd simply burst, but it never happened.

It struck him then that he could have this. He could stay here with Phaedra, with his twin baby girls. The Basin did not suit him any longer, and facing Zikar-Sin was nearly unbearable now. Mauja was the only hesitance that flickered beneath her alluring magic. Could he abandon his King? Even if only to Outcast himself? If he was an Outcast, he could serve Mauja individually despite the former being in a herdland, and he could see Phaedra constantly. And why not?! Why not join the Grey? He could serve Mauja from another herdland, be at his call in an instant! Joy like butterflies, sparrows, and every beautiful thing in the world thundered, exploded, grew in his body until he too had tears of happiness flickering and shining in silver irises. Again he embraced her, neck flung over her shoulders and hugging her close as he laughed almost deliriously, the sound echoing like golden bubbles of amazement and joy over the hills of greenery. Everything seemed to at last be falling into place. What did he have left to fear? "We can do this, Phaedra!" he cried, eyes moist with the ferocity of his own emotions.

In a sudden bout of energy with all this nectar in his soul, he circled Phaedra and as he came upon her side, facing the same way, he ducked beneath her wing and draped his head once more over her shoulders so that she may press her face to his chest if she wished. "I can join you here, or belong to no herd, and we can raise the girls and-!" such emotion took over him that he pressed her tighter, the noise that vibrated in his throat one of wordless joy. "Phae, we can be together. We can finally do this! I can wake up by your side every day and wake you, telling you how beautiful you are. We can watch our daughters play, and we can...we can finally be whole, Phaedra." Voice dropped to an intimate, heartfelt whisper here. Tilting his crown skyward he lifted his muzzle to nibble and press gently behind her right ear, overwhelmed with his own happiness. "I love you, Phaedra. I love you, I love you, I love you," he swore again and again, as if to print the very words into her flesh and the tone of his voice into her mind. "Nothing will make me leave you now, I will always return to your side. I love you more than anything else in the world, my dearest." Similar utterances were breathed reverently directly into her ear, praising her and showering her with the love he had been unable to give her for so long. Separation seemed unbearable at that moment, and he merely desired to give her the love she deserved as much as he could in that instant.

She had finally taken his heart and made it whole, and despite the new scars that littered the poor thing, she had healed him in every other way. Tolio would rather die than leave this moment with her, where they were so happy and beautiful together. All he wanted was to love her for the rest of eternity, and to watch their children grow before their eyes.

Nothing seemed impossible anymore.
