The high flat stone had some sides conveniently covered by some taller standing stones, giving a shelter for the soft, yet chilly wind. The stones were also warmed by the pale sun on this clear autumn morning. It had been raining for a few days, but these last had just been overcast and this morning brought the sun back.

It was welcoming for the large wolf; where she was from, the winters were like this autumn and the summers warm and dry. The ice, snow and sleet were nothing she was used to and she could search high and low in this land to find some pleasant place to spend the winter. She remembered the last one in The Edge. How she often found herself huddled up in a hole and wishing her fur would soon learn to adapt.

She rolled over onto her back where she lied on the flat rock and stretched out with a content grunt. Hind legs straight out across the stone, front ones up into the air and then slowly down over her head. Then she rolled over onto her stomach, stretched again before dragging herself up in a half sitting position, with her head rested on one of the standing stones.

The wind brushed her across the face while she peered around, ears moving this way and that way. The rock-formation was quite out in the open, with only a large oak nearby. Other than that, it was tall yellow grass all over. Like a lake of straws. She would easily see a horse coming, unless it was one of them small ones, sneaking through the grass. Though she would probably hear it moving through the dry straws, or smell it, should it come with the wind.

The Thistle Meadow happened to be one of Ayaka’s favorite places to go. She loved absolutely everything about it. The peace, the scent, the feeling of the small thistle tickling her paws, it was all so lovely. The scent of rain still stung the air from the days before, but the sun shown down onto her auburn pelt casting a beautiful sheen. Her fiery orbs looked out, searching. Searching for possibly a new friend to make.

The gentle breeze petting the lupa’s earthy hued pelt and she could feel the little pups inside of her squirming around. She knew that they would soon be born, and she and Lupus would both be the proud parents of them. The thought of the tiny fur balls romping around the desert sands and the frosted grounds of the Basin made a smile spark inside of her. Her looked down of the extended belly and could almost imagine the cute little pups that would soon be energetically running around.

The thoughts soon faded away as a new scent came into her black nostrils. It was of another wolf. She had not met many since she had come to Helovia, but a couple was better than none. Her ears shoved forward and her turned her cranium to the way that the scent was coming from, and then shse trotted off. A kind smile came to her white lips as she began to see a large rock formation. Sitting on top of it was a large wolf. Her colors were much like Ayaka’s but she was much taller. A blue feather had been woven into the left side of mane-like fur.

“Hello there! I am Ayaka, soldier of the Dragon’s Throat. It is a lovely day isn’t it?” She spoke with her voice steady and calm. The wind brushed through her chestnut pelt as she waited for the wolf’s response.

"blah blah blah."

There was suddenly movement through the grass. Arathea directed her nose towards it, ears perked and eyes watching intently as the straws parted until the wolf came into view. It was one of the small ones. The native wolves. She titled her head to the side in curiosity and sat silently while the small one introduced herself.

"That it is Ayaka, soldier of the Dragon's Throat." She straightened up from her half-lying position to see the wolf better. "This one is Arathea and thinks you have quite a title for a wolf in this land. How did a wolf get such a rank in this land of horses?" With a flick of her long tail, she climbed over the standing stones and jumped to the ground before sitting down on her haunches in the grass in front of Ayaka.

"Warden of World's Edge was the title of this one once. To watch over the forest. It was attacked one day, taken over. Was forced to run." Eyes wandered off into the distance as she spoke, but then returned to look at the smaller wolf. "Does she knows who holds the Edge this day?" Could King Unicorn have taken it back? Was he even alive? Arathea pushed the thoughts aside to concentrate on Ayaka. No use asking questions if the mind was too busy with its own thoughts to even hear the answer.

The wind picked up a bit and had Arathea huddle up for the short duration with a non-amused expression. If the weather turned colder, she would have to move even further south in hopes of finding a place to spend the winter. Such an unusual land... The seasons so opposite to each other.
