Orangemoon brought with it clear, dark skies and cool air, and even in the more southern areas of Helovia the heat was beginning to wane as darkness swallowed the day. The ground underfoot was damp and slippery from a recent rain, the scent of it thick and pleasant in the night air. A golden stallion wound through the trees that bordered the Thistle Meadow, listening to the rush of wind through the brittle grasses and drinking in the scent of wildflowers that lingered on the cool breeze.

The distant trickle of cool water met the Phantom’s ears and he gravitated towards it, drawn from the shelter of the trees and out into the open. Faint moonlight cascaded across his hide, lending a silver sheen to his gilded skin. He had been wandering for some time now, growing accustomed to the strange land he had found himself in all of a sudden. He strode through the night like a dangerous shadow, moving without sound across the rolling meadow until his cloven hooves met the stream’s bank. A cool, autumn wind brushed through his hair as he looked down at his reflection in the bubbling water. Cold blue eyes stared back at him, but where the real Roland might have admired his reflection, his doppelganger looked upon his own image with disdain and indifference.

He lowered his head to drink, lips barely brushing the surface of the water before he heard footsteps squelching against the soft ground downstream. The sound of an approaching creature made him pause, head tilting to peer through the darkness. Shadows danced before his eyes, the pale moon now hidden beneath a thick blanket of clouds, and his poor sight seemed to be simply taunting him. Obscure shapes moved in his vision but remained indefinable, and Roland watched with growing impatience until it became too much to bear. Turning on his haunches he set off down the bank, tail twitching against his hocks as he searched for the carrier of wisdom denied.

The stallion’s lips twisted into something akin to dark amusement as his eyes finally settled upon the form of a small mare struggling through the mud. Her hooves sunk deeper into the earth with every movement, shadowy wings held aloft as she tried to escape the soil’s grasp. Roland didn’t bat an eye in sympathy; this was a Pegasus, after all. He watched with a sadistic smirk, looking down at her with icy, lidded eyes. “Stuck are we?” His voice was taunting and quiet, barely heard over the noise of her thrashing about.

He moved closer, slender limbs choosing their footing carefully lest he slip into the mire with her. She reared up before him, twisting on her heels and finally managing to wrench herself from the silt. The Phantom flinched away as mud spattered his hide, lip curling as the young mare landed upon firm ground. “Couldn’t you have flown out? You have wings, don’t you? Though I suppose in moments of panic one doesn’t necessarily think logically…” he remarked dryly, eyeing her feathery appendages with a dangerous glare. “If you don’t put them to good use you mustn’t need them, hm? So you wouldn’t mind if I gave you a hand there and, say, cut them off?” His horn caught the glint of broken moonlight, flashing dangerously like a mercenary’s blade as he spoke.

(Not my greatest post, sorry <3)

Push your luck if it makes you a promise that turns con men honest.
