        KOU
sometimes the wrong choices bring us to the right places

The pain of labor was not something that Kou thought she would ever grow accustomed to. The way her body worked against the life growing within her, pushing it, constricting around it; the way the life within her fought against her body in refusal of being expelled from its home took a lot out of her. Two other children she had given birth to, but for neither of them had she gotten so heavy or her body ached the way it did. The nurse felt that the time was drawing near for her to give birth to her and her doctor's new child, which was why she left the basin. Giving birth to Nao in such coldness had been rough on her as well as her young daughter. She had worried for days that the cold would steal her daughter from her, but she had grown strong in the wintry basin.

She did not wish to worry as much this time, however. Worrying over her child's wellbeing in the cold tended to rob her of her joy.

The pale nurse had been grazing when the telltale signs of impending birth began. The sharp pains that raced through her body, the constricting of muscles, and the fight the soon to be newborn put up against her. Her white tail began to flick from side to side as she abandoned her grazing to find a suitable place to bed down and rest and give birth to her new child.

Minutes ticked by feeling like hours before the first foal slid free of her body. Kou lifted her head, her pale neck craning to look at the dark foal laying behind her. As she was about to stand she felt more movement within her body as her muscles began to work once more to free another life. There was no time for Kou to register the shock of having twins, there was only the desperate need of birthing the second twin so the pain of labor would come to an end.

Time, again, seemed to slow and drag on and on then return to a normal speed once her second foal was laying in the grass behind her. Kou wasted no time clambering to her feet and turning to her two children. She nuzzled them both in turn and smiled when she found that they were both colts. She had promised the doctor she would give him a son. She'd certainly outdone herself with giving him two. The nurse could already imagine the look on her doctor's face when he would see his two sons.

"Sacre." She said as she nuzzled the first foal. "And Roux. Welcome to the world, my sons."

"You lack the requisite spine and testicular fortitude to study under me"
-- Patrick Rothfuss

The shade had seen the way his mate's sides had swelled, the way she seemed to wobble from side to side with the symptoms of pregnancy. He had observed her like this before and, although he kept it to himself, worried just that bit more about her each day. She always seemed so small and dainty, but the Doctor knew better than to think of his Nurse in such a weak manner. For Kou was far from weak and she had proven that point on a lot of occasions. He could only hold admiration for the mare as she could clearly do something he would never be able to do nor have the strength to. d'Artagnan followed Aramis whose tail swung happily from side to side as he trailed the scent of Kou, the instincts of a healer told the shade that his pale heart was nearing the day of child birth. So, naturally, he trailed behind her with his movements stiff with anticipation and wariness. It would be a bad time to startle the Nightshade, not if they wanted their necks snapping anyway.

By the time he emerged onto the purple grounds of the Thistle Meadow he had quickly spotted Kou, lying on the floor and clearly in labour. d'Artagnan cleared his mind of the initial shock that always seemed to hit him and tried his utmost to keep his healers head on as he cantered over to her. Slamming to a halt to reach down his dark muzzle and attempt to softly touch her cheek as he witnessed his first son into the world. He smiled one of his rare vibrant smiles of joy and began to take a step back for Kou to rise until he realized she wasn't moving. Panic filled his body and it took him some seconds for it to register in his mind that his dear beautiful Nurse was in fact giving birth to twins. d'Artagnan watched in awe as finally his second son joined his brother in a wet mess upon the floor and he blinked in sheer shock and overwhelming happiness. How long had it been since he had felt this kind of joy? Oh, not since he was just a small buck.

He stood there for a moment with a dazed look on his faced as Kou named them Sacre and Roux, nuzzling their petite forms. Slowly, on shaking legs, d'Artagnan outstretched his nose once again to touch the soft pink of his mate, his face filled with admiration and love. "Thank you my Nurse, you have given me two precious gifts today. That must have been a heavy burden" as he said the last line he let the gentle work of time healing flow into her body, relieving her of weariness and pain before finally he turned to look upon his newborns.

They were black and crimson with small horns poking from atop their heads. One looked very much like a mirror image of himself and the other had eyes strikingly like his mothers. He moved over to nuzzle each of them in fatherly affection "my strong boys" he said simply to them, his voice laced in passionate pride.

They can’t see where this is gonna end
They all think I'm crazy, but to me it's perfect sense

It was bright. Too bright at first for the azure eyes that battled against the strange power that touched his face. Dainty nostrils took in his first breath of the living world with the overload of scents bringing him fully to life. He was a stark contrast to his mother, dark like charred firewood with tufts of black mane. There was a promise of red marks to show upon his flank, eyes and ears, but his baby fur was covering them well for now. His eyes were a piercing blue, a memento to his mother, just like his horn that was made of her fine weave. The little black colt laid there for a moment, a bundle of legs and small split hooves, head lifted up to view the new and exciting world. However, his concentration was taken upon another movement to his side, looking down the colt saw his brother for the first time. He blinked in startled observation as he realized that whatever it was next to him was the same thing as himself. Accept this one was red and white with the same feature adorning his head. Yet, somehow the colt felt an unseen pull towards the child next to him, like they were the same and something he could not see tied them together.

Something soft nuzzled him then and the colt jumped in shock, gaze roving to catch the sight of his mother who was pale and beautiful. Her voice was calm, soothing his racing heart in a way only a mother could as she said something solely to him. Sacre. Was this his? Was that what he was? A word for himself that very soon he would come to understand that this very word was indeed his name. Another word was given to the child next to him, his name was Roux. Finally another nose touched him then and his head swung to gaze upon his father, a crimson stallion who was huge to the wide eyed Sacre, who decided that his father rather resembled the colt next to him.

It wasn't long then until nature nudged him gently and he unfurled his legs shakily, cloven hooves attempting to find some purchase on the floor to stand for the first time. He couldn't do it at first, falling over in a heap with his ears flickering in confusion. The concept of standing was a hard one to grasp at first, though he knew somewhere deep down that he must do it. In his first minutes as a child he experienced a fair few emotions as he went from annoyed, to angry to simply exasperated as he battled with his spindly legs. After a few rests and failed attempts, Sacre finally got to his feet and dithered over to his mother for food. Satisfied in his difficult accomplishment of getting to his feet and viewing the world from a different height. Tail happily dashed from side to side, enjoying the innocent moments of childhood alongside his family. The problems of the world had not yet touched this young soul who cared for nothing, but his growling belly.

Lungs filled with oxygen as the small colt lay, released from the grips of his mother's womb. He was the second one, and he was highly aware of the other body pressed against him. It was wet and warm, just as he, and it lay motionless, just as he. The young creature dared not open its eyes, but a sound so soothing and comforting, a sound he had grown accustomed to while he was ten thousand leagues under the sea, welcomed him to the world and swiftly carried out the duty of wringing him dry and clean. Roux. That was his name, and the other body next to him, dry now as well, was Sacre. The reddened colt's nostrils twitched and he blinked his eyes open just as another voice, dark and rugged, moved into the scene. The other voice touched him just as the first had done. He did not flinch or move or anything--he stayed still, waiting for something to happen. He continued to blink his eyes, their silver revealing themselves to the world, but all he could see was movement, faint blurs of shapes before be turned his head. The sunlight was pointed just right now, and when he opened his eyes once more he saw nothing but a stark silver. Confused, he again waited for something to happen. After several moments nothing did, and the colt felt secure enough to move.

He knew the small body next to him had already gotten to its feet, for he felt alone and cold on the ground. Grunting some in colt-like determination, he folded his wiry legs beneath him and pushed off the ground. It was a series of jerky movements and failed attempts, but he was finally standing, catching his breath. The colt continued to blink, hoping to see, but he only caught faint hints of movement around him. Despite this, he knew exactly where each body around him was standing. The other small colt was standing next to the soothing voice, and the rugged voice was standing close to them as well. Something inside of his belly churned and he took his first steps, towards the soothing voice, his muzzle out in front of him as he poked around her and pressed his way in to fill the churning in his belly.

Satisfied, he pulled his head away and turned his mouth skyward, towards where he knew their faces to be--the soothing voice and the rugged voice. Blinking several hard times, Roux only looked upon the stark silver.

"Talk talk talk."

Formed a tiger's eye
That looked down on my face,
Out of time and out of place

        KOU
sometimes the wrong choices bring us to the right places

Kou's blue eyes closed as d'Artagnan's muzzle touched her own and seconds later she could feel the effects of his magic on her weary body. The aches that came with childbirth dulled and she felt a bit of energy. "I told you I would give you a son." A smile curved the corners of her mouth and she sighed softly. Indeed she had told him, but she had not suspected that she would give him two let alone at the same time.

The nurse pulled her head away from her lover and looked to her newborn sons who were already struggling to gain control of long legs. She laughed quietly, the sound filled with love and joy that only a mother could experience. "Look at our sons, love." She murmured. "They're perfect." Just as each of their children were in their own unique ways. "So perfect."

Her horned head lowered and she nudged each of her sons in turn to help them find their legs and stand. It was not long after that they were both having their first meals. Her neck craned around and she nuzzled her sons lovingly knowing already that they would be strong and bring only pride to their race and wondering if either of her sons possessed magic.

Roux was the first to end his meal and Kou watched him as he blinked and seemed to stare at nothing. Concern filled her eyes and she touched her muzzle to her son's face. "His eyes, d'Artagnan." she said concerned. "There's something wrong."
