déodat,
Frostfall had come to greet him not long after his return to the Basin and it was a quiet chill that made his skin burn with the memory of summer. His absence had done little to soothe the ache in his wanderer’s heart, but Helovia had become a home of sorts to the bloodied beast- in mind and body alike. His feet knew each dip and swell in the Basin, his eyes knew each curve of the mountains standing so tall above them in the distance… Had he come to miss these lands or had he simply been weakened by their comforts, by their luxuries? He tried to imagine that he had returned only in the name of exhaustion and the tiresome realization that he could not run forever from everything in his past that promised to haunt him… But perhaps it was not as bad as it seemed, perhaps he was finally able to accept that settling was the best thing for a war-beaten animal so mangled from the wounds that now scarred his heart and mind.

Perhaps he had finally found belonging in life.

The Arch had somehow come to embrace Déodat in manner and climate- for they were both besieged with the cold ache of a frigid beauty. The hard ground upon which he passed seemed to give way beneath him, welcoming him, comforting him. However, at times it was hard for the man to ignore how his legs seemed to quiver against the chill and how the frozen breeze numbed his face in spite of the fire that thrived within his gaze. He was a constant amongst the snowy plains and often mesmerized by the icy caverns that reflected his equally icy stare. They had taken him, consumed him, and warmed him despite the obvious cold that gave them their namesake. He was but another fixture to their claims and though he was unsure of what that meant for his wellbeing, he was content, even happy.

Again, Déodat found himself meandering through the various caverns of the frozen plains, placid and distracted by the endless memories that often plagued his existence. If it had not been for the distant clicking of heels upon the ice, he would have continued on his path of reckless abandon, but he was not one to ignore the possible idea of company, especially when it was not often that he encountered such sentiment here in the cold. However, when he had grown close enough to catch wind of her fragrance, so familiar to him, he could not resist approach in response.

The Corporal had always been a curious creature in his mind simply because he had never laid eyes on such blasphemy before. He had never even been given the chance to address her outside of the occasional passing throughout their shared homestead. However, looking upon her now, she looked vulnerable and naïve. Her eyes traced the glass with childlike wonder and it was hard not to chuckle in response to her obvious fascination. But, that’s not to say that it wasn’t compelling… After all, Déodat found her curiosity to be somewhat endearing. Had she been to the Arch before or was she just that easily amused?

"A beautiful place is it not?” His lips curled in a half-grin despite the hard set of his gaze. After all, he was not always so gruff and domineering at heart even if his body had grown accustomed to such involuntary reactions. They were not in the Basin and certainly not here under professional pretenses, so the man decided to let bygones be bygones – this was a time of relaxation.
