Paw sets of pawed feet lightly churn the snow. Since the disappearance of light from the heavens, Osiris has kept the companions who survived the first attack of shades close. Mukki is particularly upset, standing close to the hind of the great hybrid and occasionally rubbing against the furred leg of his friend. Robbed of the communication between them, the large beast can do little to ease the nerves of his wolven friend. Instead, he marches forward, off the pathway, walking in the shadows created by the strange lantern trees.

The winter only grew more bitter, without the sun to warm the earth below. The snow ceased to fall since the disappearance of the Earthen God, but the dry chill of winter howled through the trees, a reminder that not all lands on this earth were cursed. Osiris found himself thankful for the thick coat which covered his body, keeping him warm despite his trek north. Ophelia had urged the intelligence to seek out new information, but the hybrid found himself increasingly more suspicious of the contract between his home and that of the Basin. Wishing to keep a close eye on the less than friendly herd of ice and snow, he moves forward quietly on the layers of snow.

Overhead, Comadre flies forward, invisible in the dark of the night aside from the faint glow cast from the trees. The little dragon had been quiet and withdrawn, feeling the hollowness of his spirit caused by the lack of fire churning in his heart. The peaceful creature rarely used the element gifted to him, but now he felt empty, as if robbed of part of his spirit. Osiris, as well, felt more morose than usual with the silence of his mind. Who would have ever thought the stallion would wish for the nattering of his companion once again? With a grumble, the wolf thinks to himself no one.

if this is for someone then i'll just get rid of this :X

The lake may have remained with some light, Faelene couldn't turn herself away from the outside world. Sun or not life was going to continue, and she was worried about the goings on beyond their borders. While everyone was a lot more defenseless without the Gods, without magic it didn't mean they were weak; it didn't mean the world would stand still. The lion wouldn't lie down with the lamb because the Gods were gone.

In her mind she had began to contemplate if things would get worse. Wouldn't they run out of food eventually? Then would it matter what land you belonged to? If you carried wings or horns? A more even playing field she didn't see goodness thriving. When it came to it the will to survive would rule out logic. They would all be killing each other for scraps of food and warmth. While she may hope the Gods figured this mess, she was more on the hope for the best prepare for the worst.

Time had passed (despite no way of telling), and her eyes grew accustomed to the changes. They were not as tired of the black, and lack of outlines. She was not as overwhelmed. She was starting to figure where the trees with lights could lead her. Preparing for a trip to the Threshold, curious if there were any useful or lost souls she trekked across of what happened to be the Frostbreath Steppe. The gray landscape stretching in dislocated pieces before her, by the natural lanterns all strung out.

The wind was not very kind out here, forcing her to keep her face down, nose tilted at times not to have her breath stolen. The Thief took an even pace not to tire or overheat herself. Sweating wasn't a likeable trait, and in these conditions she mused how more appealing it would be to be a wolf of the tundra. The red maned couldn't quite picture a horse with its tongue stretched out panting to cool itself. It was too bad for her she didn't know there was a walking contradiction on the same, dimmed horizon.

A quiet growl. Osiris turns his head to look toward Kaya, the female wolf with the most dependable sense of danger. The hybrid calls for a halt by pausing with one front paw lifted, Pahana coming to an immediate stop and Mukki trembling close to the giant. Ears scan the surroundings for the approach of an unknown, but the nose is quicker on the draw this time. The scent of a female carries itself on the bitter wind. The predator looks past the lantern trees to see the outline of a dark figure.

Her movements are graceful, a lady skilled in the art of movement, though the wolf cannot tell for sure if it is for battle or stealth. The steps are quiet, swallowed by the sound of the wind howling in his ears for a moment, golden eyes narrowing against the chill. The scent carried from her direction is neutral, snow and pine. Whoever this mystery mare was, she was a lady of the Basin or at least the North.

Above, Comadre hovers, violet eyes prying forward in the darkness toward the mare. Crimson, he says in their mind, flashing him images of her general build and color. "Let's go," Osiris grunts, stepping out into the light of the lantern, on the well beaten path covered in snow and ice. Shadows of the strange party form in, haloed in a dull gold of the trees. Paws crunch softly in the snow as the great wolf trots calmly toward the lady of black and red.

"Pardon me, miss," he calls toward her, baritone voice loud enough to crawl over the violent winds which tear through the raised planes of the steppe. "Might you hail from the Aurora Basin?"

The red maned was not as aware of her company as they she. If the wind was softer she might have heard the flap of dragon wings. As it were she did not see her oncoming company until they slipped from the black, washed in golden and orange. Silver eyes narrowed, taking the three in for good measure, the stretches of muscles tightening throughout her body. What she saw had her taking a stand, drawing her neck closer to her body, red tassels twitching upon hocks. There was not just three wolves, but one large one they were drawn too. A hunting party if she ever saw one, but what they were after?

Taking, collected breaths she wanted to get the whole picture. Naturally she should have been afraid, take off running, or bare her own teeth, strike the ground with her hoof. Faelene noticed the tallest, the largest of the group was not exactly a wolf. An equine's features looked back at her despite the thick, shaggy fur, and fiery eyes of a hunter. So, she dared take another step forward, a spark of interest in her dark eyes. They could have easily over taken her if they had wanted, stayed in the shadows, but they were coming toward her. Being polite she continued to walk, knowing it was the direction she was headed any way. When he called out, there was trepidation. Who was this stallion? What did he want with the Aurora Basin? Faelene worried it was bad news, but her mask remained smooth except for her open curiosity.

"I do. Is there something I can help you with to save you the cold walk?" The dark lady would take make another stride before adding, "Though you look better equipped for the journey than the many others I have seen come this way..." While others might have again regarded his companions, her ears drawn upon him wondering where he came from. She wasn't close enough to tell, or gather scent of her own. Faelene had conversed with a wolf before, and they had had two live with the Unicorns.

Osiris comes to a slow and graceful stop, not wanting to encroach too closely upon the crimson and black fae. The hybrid had learned long ago that no matter how innocent his intentions were, strangers typically did not take immediately to his unique appearance, especially bearing the teeth and agility of a predator. He notices a moment of what appears like hesitation at his question, which is rather expected. Some strange wolf creature stops you in the middle of the night to inquire about your herd - what would you think?

Even the look upon her face in the dull light reveals the truth, though. This crimson maned beauty is indeed from the Aurora Basin.

Comadre swoops down from his place in the sky to land upon the thickly-furred shoulder of the great brute, confirming any suspicions the mare may have that Osiris was, in fact, part equine. Maybe knowing that the herbivore still resided somewhere inside the towering body. Whining, Mukki comes to sit next to Osiris's back leg, peering forward toward the dark mare timidly. At her comment, the largest of the beasts smirks, letting out a small chuckle. "Naturally gifted with an abnormally thick coat, yes," he says, his voice still rich despite the light-tone of conversation.

"I am Osiris," the wolf offers, wishing to earn some trust from this lady. "I hail from the Foothills, a member of the Grey. You may know of a contract between our lands," his eyes looking pointedly toward her, a gleam of gold in the frail light emanating from the strange trees. "A contract of brawn. If the Basin is preparing for any sort of scuffle, we would appreciate the forewarning," a smile on his lips at the end of his sentence, despite the darker content of his words. Osiris was a creature of the dark; it was his home, where he was more comfortable revealing such a smile.

His movements seemed careful, precise under her close gaze. While she was far from dropping her guard, she wasn't about to stand petrified in their presence. Intrigue beat out fear, at least for the time being. What did he search for?

Wings against the air, a dark figure with the faintest glimmer caught her attention. A moment she did not know what she had seen until she realized it was perched on her new company's shoulder. A dragon. Even now after befriending one she couldn't hide the marvel that lightened her stare, briefly taking in the scaled beast. So she hadn't been wrong about assuming he wasn't just a giant wolf. Faelene had to put a dam on the questions that came to mind. If they could still talk, if he could breathe fire because apparently even with the Gods gone they were still bonded.

Luckily, distracted by the whine, the lady peered down at the sound wondering what bothered his canine companion. Faelene didn't think she was the intimidating in this conversation. Was it something else? Eyes swept the washed out plains if she might see another. There was not much to see in this black. A quick blink, she met the bright stare of the hybrid, studying the way he responded from his faint chuckle, the twist of his lip to her comment. She had a feeling there was not many who were the same blood as he. It wasn't surprising, she had never thought of such things. "One way of putting it I suppose," she agreed, but didn't feel any need to point out how others might see it as a blessing in this new world. He didn't seem the sort to think so.

Casually, dark ears twitch as they had not expected his name. Accepting it, she was certain it would be easier to recall than the others that had come and gone. He went on to explain his presence, and it put a little more sense to why he was way out here. A member of the Grey keeping tabs on the Basin she assumed. The Thief kept a smooth face, merely meeting his steady stare. She half expected him to find his answer in her silver eyes, because she knew quite well about their contract. Psyche had told them of it, and Faelene hated the idea. She did not trust the Grey. They did not seem as "neutral" as they said. All this was kept beneath a relaxed mask while the wolf-equine continued. All she could wonder about why he was telling her this, and not someone else. Faelene doubted she seemed of any importance, of any bearing on such matters. She almost flatly asked him so, instead decided to take a more Lena approach. Cordially, and gracefully.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Faelene, and I can very well repeat the message, but I'm sure my Lady is quite aware of that detail," she replied with an air of nonchalance. "She's trying to keep numbers even should someone attempt to cast us from this home. I'm sure you've heard all that so I must ask is there something else you're trying to tell me, Osiris?" Dark brows angled above her black pupils, a question to her silver irises. Waiting to see how smooth this beast was.

In the back of her mind, she kept thinking of her single idea on the issue of war. That was returning a certain little Pegasus to the Throat (who they had assumed had been stolen) who might ease all the assumptions. Or at least put one issue that was wrong right. Ari really needed to go back home, she seemed like a frail butterfly in need of what the red maned didn't have to give. Since she had not been able to complete her quest, her spirit had dimmed. The problem was the Thief still had no idea how she was going to take her home without hell raining down on her.
