Am I nervous? No. Of course not. Should I be? Yeah right. Whats not to love about me? Things with Thor went absolutely perfect. And really, if the king loves me, who wouldn't? Duchanar doesn't, of course, but what use is he to me anyway? So in the interest of progress, here we are, traveling to meet the Glazier's who are working hard on their wall. By Thor's blessing I have joined the herd; with the Glaziers' blessings I will begin my work as a crafter in the herd. For now, nothing would make me happier. After all, everyone must start somewhere. I'll start here.
The winter raged on and Kahlua was none too happy about it. Everywhere she turned there was snow, whiteness and cold. Or rather now- blackness. Even the days had turned to night. At least for now she was comforted by the fire that burned nearby on her right. They were lucky to have a queen, the Dragon Heart, that could provide for them in such a way. The everlasting night would have been much darker without the flames. She was lucky to have Thor to guide her about the land. It certainly would have been much more difficult to find the amenity on her own. To her left, perhaps thirty yards off, was the beginnings of a clearing. Perhaps where the glaziers were planning on building a portion of the wall that was to enclose the World's Edge. She had not seen any portions of the wall built on her trek here with Thor, but then would she have with the inky night pushing close upon them? She wondered briefly if there were any portions actually built, then her mind wandered to warmer thoughts.

Arching her neck, trying to remain composed, Kahlua looked about her. Who would come? Lace? Aaron? Someone else? She hoped it was a stallion. It was so much easier for her to interact with males. She flicked her tail briefly then turned to Thor. “Thank you again for escorting me, Thor.” She smiled kindly. She really was glad to have him for company. She was a social butterfly by nature and solitary wandering was stressful to her. Looking back to her left, and the clearing, she settled herself in to wait until such time as the glaziers would arrive. Excitement stirred her stomach. Even with the endless night, her love for life burned strongly. Nothing could dampen her spirits on this day. This was truly the beginning of her new life.

Voices fell like noisy droplets of water into the silence of his dreams and caused the images that stirred beneath heavy eyelids to ripple and disperse. Slowly, grudgingly, Lace allowed a scent of nearby family to tickle his senses, finding the unfamiliar spice of a mare only moderately interesting. Probably yet another newcomer. They came trickling in one after another, slowly but steadily integrating with the rest of the herd. Equines, unicorns, pegasi. Even a gryffon had chosen the Edge as her preferred place to live, and it no longer surprised the stallion like it had used to. Especially not now, when this was one of few locations in all of Helovia that was light enough to see the color of someones coat.

An eye cracked open and squinted through the dancing lights that permeated the glowing mist, over towards the location where two horses wandered. Recognizing the gentle-hearted WeyrLead immediately, the drowsy crafter took his time in studying the unfamiliar mare from the cover of the group of trees he had been resting by. While the flickering flames kept alive by Israfel warmed his skin he took in the sight of the femme, noting the painted patterns with a prick of sorrow - they had been painted too, both of them. Not as starkly in black and white like this equine, but rather a more gentle hue of gold and ivory. Would this lady too become a victim to heinous crime, a target for slaughter like his friends had been?

He certainly hoped not.

Taking in a deep breath, Lace finally gave a heavy sigh and heaved himself away from the trees he had been leaning against, leaving the sleeping bundle of dragon in the tree where she had curled up. He approached the newcomer quietly, offering Thor an acknowledging nod before the full intention of the grullo was turned upon the blue-eyed dame.

"Welcome to World's Edge" he greeted with low, soft voice and arched the muscled neck in a polite greeting, continuously scrutinizing her with steady golden eyes. "My name is Lace, a crafter and glazier. Who are you?"

He wasn't in the mood for formalities. This heavy darkness was making it hard to know when it should be day or night, and it was slowly coming to affect his bodily rhythm. Sleeping more and more, the silver-coated stud felt his pleasure of being rid of unwanted powers spoiled by a persistent tiredness that just wouldn't let go. The sooner formalities was over, the quicker he could get back to that dream... It had left a feeling of something very pleasant happening.

THOR
She was a vision of beauty that danced around my head, quite dismally so. If I were to fly to her we would both come crashing down to the flames of hell only because we were meant for ruin, for eminent disaster. Could I lie to myself and pretend that she was not gone and that I had somehow taken her place in heaven? Somehow I doubted that she would even remember my name, my face, the love we shared. But of course, it was all a matter of opinion. Perhaps we had not shared love at all, but instead a likeness for the security such an idea possessed. I could think of a million ways to describe her beauty, her inspiration- but would it be worth it? Could I recall her dark eyes and find comfort or just pain? Could I reminisce in her faded touch or would the sensation only burn? No matter where I turned my desperate thoughts, she was there carving her broken name upon my waiting tongue.

Kahlua was a curious mare with the personality to match. She piqued my dead interests and made me feel alive- of course I won’t say that it had anything to do with any real affection I had toward the girl but more so because of the loneliness I felt inside. Part of my heart had been taken after my beloved’s death and now that the gaping void had been cooled by the everlasting night, all I could feel was the emptiness that remained. Perhaps I was wrong to indulge in her company or perhaps it was a sickening verse that I had grown accustomed to singing, but at least I could still sing at all.

It’s my pleasure. Your endeavors are just as much mine as they are your own.” Distractedly, I gazed at the mare with the sapphire eyes, still engrossed in memories or forever with a girl that would never know what forever could have felt like. I suppose you could say it was a saddening attribute of mine but I had no way of overcoming it- at least until I found the means to engage my heart’s affairs elsewhere.

It would happen someday of course, of that I was sure. However, my musings were soon interrupted by the approach of a silver-spun stallion with a curious web strung across his elegant face. I had certainly never been one-on-one with the man, but I knew that his heart was pure and his intentions good. He had been faithful to the Edge for some time now and though his residency far outreached my own, I still felt a small connection to him simply because he was part of the Quian, part of my family. “Lace, it’s good to see you. I trust you’ve been well?” It felt strange that I could not recall another memory with the fellow, but I promised the open night air that at some point there would be.

Slowly, I closed my eyes, content to let introductions smooth the surface of my distraction. I was once again lost to those wondrous eyes and quirky smile- she was everlasting, just like the night. But just as I had thought to imagine her, my sweet Tamira, she was once again ripped from my grasp and spread throughout the darkness like a vapor meant for the dead.

The suffering had commenced.

Those that had called Helovia home for some time seemed so inclined to introspection and memories of the past. Kahlua was as far from mucking about in her past as the Edge was from the Throat. Yes, there were days were the past seemed closer than the present, but in general her mind was stuck in the here and now. She knew what she wanted and she was after it. She wasted no time at all, and Thor had only been too kind to lead her right to it. And here she was now, preparing to meet one of the Glaziers face to face. She could all but squeal with excitement. She managed to contain the sounds, but only barely. Thor's voice beside her gave her a smile. He was kind at heart, and though he was troubled she barely noticed it. Kahlua was always a little self-absorbed, today especially so.
Come on then, Aaron. Come on then, Lace. Where are you. Today is the day- your lucky day really- that you meet me! The day that I start my adventure in the Edge as a crafter, or an apprentice crafter at least. Give me a job, I promise you won't be sorry for it. But then, you can't give me a job if you don't come. So hurry along then, because there's a lot here at stake. You won't want to miss this.
The mare was impatient, but kept herself looking as well-kept as she could. And then, while she was shifting her weight from her left side to her right side, he came. She looked upon him and could have gasped- in fact she did just slightly. It was a low sound, just the sucking of air into her mouth. She had never seen anything like him- with the spider web wrapped around his face- he was astounding. Lace, his name floated off his tongue and she could have leaped for joy. Everything was coming together just as she had imagined it.

Looking to Thor for a moment, the mare let him speak first out of respect. Had she been more astute she would have thought it strange that all were so sad and here she was among them like a clown at a funeral. But she wasn't clever in that way and so she didn't think it strange at all. “I'm Kahlua, good sir,” her voice was light and had a dancing quality. Now was her time to shine. “I- we- are lucky to have met you. You are exactly who I seek.” She wasted little time in getting to the point. She always had been rather forward.

“I do admit I know little of your fantastic trade, she paused to look back to the Gentle Heart briefly, “but I told Thor I wanted to help the herd as a crafter and he has led me here.” Taking a break, knowing she could be wordy, she carried on for a moment longer. “He told me of a wall that you may need assistance with. And I'm sure there are other general duties you could need aid with. I'm certain I could help.” Her words exuded confidence. Now was not the time to seem wishy-washy and uncertain. If she was to begin her ascent to the top, building a strong foundation was of the utmost importance.

"As well as any, in these dark times" he sighed and exchanged a glance with the gentle giant that spoke of shared grief and an awareness of all the troubles the herd was facing at the moment. "It is comforting to see that the Gentle Heart still keeps his head high, I must say" he offered with a hint of a smile, acknowledging the efforts of the WeyrLead to keep their numbers up despite the cold and the hunger that continued to plague them all.

His attention was turned towards the painted mare then, and as she introduced herself with an almost glowing expression, the crafter regarded the mare with a thoughtful expression. Was this a sign, perhaps? It was as though the answer to his musings had fallen from the sky and taken shape in those clear eyes, a solution that effectively would free him from a task that was becoming increasingly unpleasant.

"I'm glad to hear that, Kahlua" he replied and gave her a slightly warmer smile, eyes glittering beneath the long silken forelock. "Gods know that we need all the help we can get if the wall is to be completed. Right now we can't do anything, magic has abandoned us along with the presence of the gods - perhaps Thor has explained this to you already - but as soon as they return I'm sure that we can find something for you to do."

Maybe she even would be interested in taking over his own position. Lace had struggled some time now with the demands of the trade, and even more so with the requirement of using magic. He would have stepped down long ago if he'd had a chance, but so far there hadn't been any suitable candidates to take up his cloak. Yseulte had left them and taken with her the only choice he'd been willing to make, Aaron was too young to carry the responsibility of a Glazier all by himself... Maybe now the time was ripe to make some changes, ease some of the weight off his shoulders.

The steady gaze that rested on the mare regarded her with calculating intensity, but before a content smile had time to break out on his lips the silver-maned stallion blinked and looked between Kahlua and the Gentle Heart.
"How come you have chosen World's Edge and the Glazier trade, m'lady? Do you have any dreams and hopes for the future perhaps, that you would be willing to share?" The tone turned more polite as the intentions of the cob-webbed stud intensified. First of all he had to make sure that she would remain loyal to the herd. Then he'd test her, make sure that she understood what it meant to be a part of the Qian... Ah, it felt good to know that an option had appeared, that his freedom wasn't too far away.

THOR
There had been many deaths in the Edge as of late and how we all planned to deal with them varied from soul to soul, but at least we were still thriving in spite of the pain. I wasn’t sure how Lace felt about such dreary news, but he seemed to hide the grief well enough behind tired eyes. “It is all that I can do anymore to encourage those like yourself, and believe me, your support is more than endearing.” Call me what you will, but I was more than grateful to those that continued to call me their WeyrLeader in spite of the true equality that made us all one. We were certainly a unique family, one comprised of so many different qualities and techniques that I sometimes got lost in all of the brilliant combinations. Take Kahlua for example- she was quite the bombshell when it came to getting where she needed to be. She wasted no time and from what I could tell, certainly wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. I had no doubt that we needed creatures such as herself to help guide us away from the ruin that had caused us such hurt in the past and I was more than delighted that she had been inspired enough by my rambling to call the Edge her home.

The mention of my name coaxed me away from my weary thoughts and for a moment I was convinced that the conversation had shifted away from the painted mare and back unto me just when I had been quite content to relinquish the stage to some other unwilling participant. But, as they prattled back and forth about the crafter’s wall, still equally as unconcerned with me as I was with them, I allowed my vagabond emotions to rule my conscious once more. However, visions of sugarplums didn’t dance in my head. Instead, soulless brown eyes seemed to overpower the last of my will and made me abysmal once again. Would there ever come a day that her memory didn’t haunt my future?

I suppose I’ve lost my touch in the way of proper introductions as well as divulging critical information when it is well warranted. As a crafter you will be granted a magic that will help you with the trade, but in a recent turn of events, all magic has been stolen from us along with the Gods who are working to have it returned. But of course, I won’t bore you with all the gory details until you’ve settled in. I’m sure there’s still much for you to learn about the Edge and all of our amenities.” Distractedly, I resumed my silent place beside the blue-eyed beauty, still reeling and dancing around various problems the Edge now faced in the absence of light and magic to be replaced with death and heartache.

Was Helovia coming to an end?

Slowly, I abandoned my selfish concerns so that I might be able to learn a little more about Kahlua and her choice to join our home (for Lace had done well in capturing my interest when it had all but frayed at the seams). I was certainly curious to find out what motivated our newest addition, especially when it appeared that she was working quite studiously from a game plan still unknown to me. Her confidence was endearing, but it was also slightly questionable.

The sound of the Glazier's voice wrapping its way around her name made her smile. Things were right and as they should be. Grumpy as Duchanar may have been when she first stumbled upon him, it was the luckiest of the events that could have transpired. She didn't know it then or now, but she knew that she was happy with what had become of the short time she had spent here in Helovia. Gods. As the grullo stallion spoke of the immortals she flicked her ears to and fro slightly. She knew little of them, other than they existed, but now was not the time for such conversations.

The watchful eye of the grullo stallion upon her did not unnerve her, though perhaps it should have. And Thor's silence and brooding, though unnatural to him, was all she had known of him and she could only assume it was his natural state. If she could have understood the history between the pair she spoke with her heart would have been heavy. She wasn't meant for such sorrows, though. Even if she had asked she would not have understood the depth of the emotions between to two of them. Her feelings were often so fleeting, even the memories of the loss of her parents and twin brother came and went so suddenly. Philosophizing just wasn't in her nature, or in the course the stars had set out for her.

Critical information. The words of her king caused her to turn her head to look at him. His words intrigued her. She had known that magic must be involved in the crafters' duties somehow, to create a wall was no small task after all, but the idea of herself gaining magic hadn't exactly crossed her mind. To be like a mare from a fairytale, like almost every horse she had seen since entering Helovia, was enticing to her and only strengthened her resolve. This was her course in her new found life. She was certain. Now, upon the words of the Glazier, she just had to put her thoughts into words.
How come I chose the edge? Dreams and hopes? Oh, there is plenty to talk about, isn't there. But we won't go into the whole story. That may be a little too much information.
“You've been nothing but a perfect host, Thor,” she smiled kindly. Gentle Heart could not have been a clearer description and she would not soon forget the hospitality she had been shown in coming here. Turning back to Lace, then, she began to address his questions. “Ah, ask all the questions you will, my friend. This is your home and I've come into it so suddenly.” His concerns were warranted, of course. She could respect that. “I can't imagine a reason I would have said no to an offer to live here. Duchanar found me in the Threshold, Thor welcomed me so kindly at the borders. Duchanar and Thor also briefly mentioned the Dragon Heart and the work she does to maintain this land for you- us.” She paused for a moment thinking back to some of Duchanar's first words when they came to the border of the Edge. “They called this a family. I want to be a part of that.” It was subtle, but her voice had changed just ever so slightly at these last two sentences. They were some of the most honest and heart-felt words she had spoken. Her prior words had all been truth, of course, but some thoughts come from the heart more than the brain.

“I must admit, the Glazier trade was a more sudden realization. In coming to the borders we had seen a mare with some sort of charm or trinket about her neck...” She trailed off momentarily before picking up with a somewhat different thought. “If I am to call the Edge home and the Qian family then I want to be useful to them. I don't desire to be a burden on the herd or useless addition simply to raise numbers.” It was all truth- the little part about her ambition for power was simply left out. Not a lie, an omission. “I'm no warrior, though, and I'm afraid I'll never be a philosopher. I suppose I could heal... but to add more beauty to the world by creating...” She trailed off, unsure how to finish the sentiment, although the intent of her sentence was likely clear. Her thoughts and words were scattered, but she was no liar. She didn't have the skills for it. She could only hope now that she had explained herself well enough for the grullo stallion and Thor. In wandering alone for a year she had not be asked to explain her feelings and she was somewhat out of practice.
