"We will not starve," she said sharply, her gaze torn from her surroundings to look at her corporal cooly. "I will not allow it." It was not something said to calm tensions, it was not a lie told to the masses to induce calm. It was, quite simply, the Lady's version of the truth, for in all honesty she thought herself more than capable of delivering on that promise. It spoke volumes of some misplaced trust in the gods - not in what they would do for her, or for her harem, but a trust in their very presence in the world. That this belief was currently in question was beside the point; still she believed, as so many others believed. They were not alone. They were not deserted. The sun would rise again, and when it did, they would survive once more without question.

Until then, it was not the normal dangers that she feared. It was not the wolves, it was not the Dragon's Throat, it was not any other enemies she might have made over her time in Helovia. It was the monsters that only came out at night, the creatures normally chased away by the sun. Where were they when the sun and the moon and the earth itself were elsewhere? They were out and about, wandering, looking for a soul to steal here and a foal to eat there. Perhaps an adult death would be forgivable, but should one of their children be taken, she would bear the brunt of the grief.

"We will not starve, but there is much that can still happen, my sister," she sighed, her gaze moving once more into the night. She lowered her voice, and then: "How do I protect them against something I do not know?"
