The world had been swallowed by darkness, the world had lost its sun and moon. It was said that the gods of this land had left this world and for the first time in his life Apache had definitive proof that such beings did exist. Even now the snow did not sparkle and light up the night as it normally did, without the light of the moon the nights were as black as the day. There was no way of spanning the passage of time you simply slept when you were tired, ate when you were hungry. The process of finding food and shelter was made significantly harder and without the warmth of the sun the winter had grown even colder. For the first time Apache knew what it was like to be totally blind, only when he was among the glowing trees could he regain any semblance of sight.

When the light vanished the stallion had nearly succumbed to panic as he felt disembodied and stumbled through the snow out of his shelter among two over hanging willow trees. The stallion who normally moved with such grace stumbled and fell more times then he cared to count as the loss of sight seemed to take away his sense of balance as well. He had never known how much he relied upon his sight to simply walk, he had never consciously realized that even though he did not see his feet he saw the ground before him and knew here to place his hooves. Now all was in darkness, he could not tell if there was ground before him or a sudden drop.

But as time passed he learned how wonderful his body was as it adapted to this sudden loss of one of its fifth senses by strengthening the others. Soon his sense of sound, scent, and touch had grown to compensate for his lose, and as time passed he noticed another change as he grew a certain sense for what lay before him. His going was usually slow when the phosphorescent trees were not near, even so he did his best to remain near the light. He was new to these lands and knew not the dangers that lived within the blackness. So he sought protection in the air, flying high enough to keep out of reach of any predators while still keeping the glowing trees in sight. He would follow the paths until his wings became tired and he had to rest, using the lights as a sort of runway he managed to make safe landings and find food and shelter.

He was in the middle of this vary type of travel when he spotted the red glow, with no other light source aside from the trees the light was like unto the sun attracting the Pegasus toward it. Swaying from side to side he slowly approached the pulsating light, as he drew closer the temperature around him rose until it was all but sweltering as he circled the pit of molten lava. Red, orange, and gold swirled in the pools and the smell of rotting eggs could be registered from his height as super heated air and gas carried the stench of sulfur and brimstone high into the sky. Riding heated are ways Apache continued to circle surveying the land bellow cast in a bright orange light. There was little vegetation near the fifty foot span pool of lava, the ground was hard and rocky, the color of obsidian, remnants on lava that had spewed up into the banks and cooled.

Casti in ominous light, growing on the edge of the rocky ground, was grass. Nourished by the rich soil that was known to be near lava flows, the grass had become so tall a horse of average stature could easily hide in. No doubt predators in beasts of darkness would dwell within the foliage, he would have to remain alert when near. The claws of winter were unable to sink into this part of the land, kept at bay by the heat. This was a great relief for the stallion who had entered the land from a warmer climate and so his pelt had had little time to grow out to protect him.

He had long since shed the coating of mud and dirt that marred his beautiful pelt, gone were the tings and grit that had entangled themselves into his main. Once again his body glowed with the cleanliness and health of a young strong stallion, even so no matter how clean he looked he could not fight off the cold or the mud that seemed to collect on his hooves and legs whenever he landed. This place although obviously dangerous was a welcomed relief from the frigid wind and snow. So ever careful the stallion landed, his hooves clattering against the hardened lava. Ruffling his the feathers on his wings Apache tucked each mighty appendage to his sides, they had been a great help in conserving his body heat as he dwelled upon the ground. Although they did not cover his entire body, tucked tightly against his body they acted as a sort of blanket.

Raising his head Apache sniffed the air in search of danger, but all he could smell was sulfur. With a shake of his head he grimaced as she disgusting smell invaded his nose. He had landed as far away from the lava as he could without putting himself in danger of a surprise attack from the grass, even so he could not escape the stench. A small price to pay for some warmth he mused, now if only there was something to eat. He cast his eyes round about in hopes of finding a tuft of grass or a small bush, but the only vegetation here was that of the towering grass of which he would not approach. In the Darkness he was at a much larger disadvantage then if he could fully see, no he would remain in the light and heat of the open ground. At least no one could sneak up on him without the risk of being spot, of course he was in plain view as well so there was little advantage to this.

Oh well at least he could rest his wings in warmth, if he needed food or a sheltered place to rest he could always go off in search of one. Even here glowing trees lined pathways, although their light was easily drowned out by the red and orange glow of the lava, if he were to follow one her was sure he could find a place to rest when needed. Until then he set about grooming his wings. Keeping an ear angled toward the grass one angled to listen for anything behind him Apache still remained alert as he cleaned.
