With These Broken Wings I'm Falling

There was a slight chill to the air as Adrimina galloped along, looking for a place to spread her beautiful black wings and fly around. But, even though she kept looking, there were no places to be found, and she was wasting her time running when she could be flying. After all, she was still a while away from the Herd Claiming Place, as she liked to call the deep forest. She glanced up, and noticed that there were no trees overhead. She stopped suddenly, and spread out her wings, admiring the feel of the sudden breeze among the feathers. She managed a good jump, and her wings sprang into action, doing what they always did; fly. Adrimina used her black wings to get higher in the air, and then started to move even faster. But, when she was flying by a tree, it hit one wing, and scratched the flesh, or maybe it did even more. Adrimina managed to fly a few more moments, although she was in circles, and then landed heavily. She glanced at her wing, and instantly wished she hadn't, or it had not been bad. The wing was scratched, and blood was dripping down quickly.

Adrimina stretched out her wing, and winced , but was able to move it in a flying motion, so she knew she could fly pretty soon. The black Pegasus had a feeling she could fly now, so she jumped in the air, and spread out her other wing again, and moved. Adrimina winced, but managed to stay in the air, and fly to the closest horse, who ever the other horse was. She found that she wasn't able to fly as fast anymore. She felt odd, going slower than she could have been, and dropped to the ground after a while. She folded her wings and began to gallop as fast as she could, hoping to find someone. She hoped that she could find someone in a group that was mostly her kind or liked Pegasus. But these groups seemed to accept only one kind of horse, be it normal horses, unicorns, pegasi, or the odd half horses. Not that she had anything against the hybrids; they were all pretty cool in their own way. Maybe she could make some hybrid friends, or some other pegasi friends, in her perfect herd. But maybe she would have to leave; she hated that.

Finally, Adrimina stopped, finding a clearing to rest, and she stretched out her wings, hoping another Pegasus would come and let her join their herd. She lowered her head and began to graze, after hunger began tearing into her, and savored the sweet green grass that was so filling now. But, after a few moments, Adrimina became thirsty, and started to look for any river that would be in the forest. There had to be a river nearby because she was thirsty. And, besides that, the place was a forest; and a large forest, hopefully one with plenty of water. But for now, Adrimina moved forwards, getting what little water she could out of the grass there. She didn't know when, but after a while, the grass seemed to hold more water than it had. Adrimina moved forwards even more, and heard the soft noise of water, and galloped towards the sound as fast as she could. One black hoof hit the water, and Adrimina lowered her head to take a drink of it. The water was cold, and it seemed slightly sweet, probably from where she had been running. After a few moments, Adrimina lowered herself in the water.

Look down, the ground below is crumbling
Look up, the stars are all exploding

Perhaps to the untrained eye, the ebony bird who circled far above the scrappy, scrubby canopy of the Threshold forest might have seemed normal- like a native crow or eagle even; riding steadily with an effortless grace between his two outstretched wings. His sharp-gaze was fixated upon the strange behaviour of one he had never seen, raven-hued much like himself, and adorned with luxurious wings. For some time the Zephyr watched her gradual progress through the forest, entertained somewhat that she seemed unable to maintain any reasonable altitude, and increasingly curious as to the purpose of her presence- here where he and Africa often sought the company of their winged kindred; to offer them security, a home and a purpose. This Pegasus mare could very well be the next, he thought with a calculating flicker of approval.

In a swift movement, Silas’s wings dipped and drew in close against the rippling feathers across his curved breast. He dropped with arrow-like precision- like a hawk upon the unsuspecting river-fish. He was no predator though, and as he slipped rapidly beneath the rim of pointed tree tops, the Zephyr’s vast wingspan unfolded with a parachute effect, gathering air beneath and bringing him to a rather abrupt halt above the outstretched bough of a mottled oak tree. There he alit, watching eyes still trained to the unfamiliar mare- but now he was barely a metre above her head, croaking as she passed unwittingly below; a call that no other would recognize but his Bonded.

Suddenly, the black mare took off at speed, gathering momentum; black hooves pummelling the carpet of stringy, bland grass and old rotting leaf litter. Silas swept from his perch after her, thrusting himself faster and faster- not that he imagined for a second the potential recruit would be lost as the drum of hooves echoed through the clear day. The stranger drew to a dramatic halt as she came up the gentle crawl of a cool-water creek, and dropped her face instantly to taste it. Silas, his heart pounding, fluttered upwards into the lowest limbs of a juvenile redwood just beyond the creek’s other side. There he released a vast, cry of sorts- something rather like the screech of a bird of prey, and stooped to commence the realignment of the various feathers which had been unsettled by his flight.

Soon the thudding hoof beats of another horse became apparent, and from the tree line through which Silas had followed the stranger, a dappled mare with only one wing appeared. Her face was veiled by thick, swinging forelock which danced to the rhythm of her gait, though beneath it was the curl of a sweet smile- reaching out to find the other mare. "Hello there." She offered tenderly, tilting her face enough to unbalance the grey forelock from her honey-brown eyes. Quietly she studied the other, before introducing herself. "I am Africa- from Dragon’s Throat." The black Zephyr mumbled something incomprehensible to the horses, but Africa quickly added- "and this is Silas."
