It was already BirdSong, how could that be? His slender eyes narrowed as his thoughts took their usual toll. It was usually the process of numerous questions and ideas being shot through his head like a hiss of lightning striking the weakened earth’s crust. It seemed as though it would be quick, but in reality it never stopped. He never stopped thinking about anything, which was strange because his actions were sometimes not thought out even though his thought process never stopped. Like for an example, the way he treated mares. He could sometimes be extremely pushy even when he wasn’t meaning to be, it was just the arrogant part of his personality. He was a determined little bugger and once he had his mind to something it was hard for him to stop. Bending his cranium around towards his rear, Levi’s ears tipped forwards, listening to the quiet hum of the cricket’s song. It was only then he realized that he had been gone for two seasons. Two full seasons he had searched for Aryel. Two full seasons he had left the own comfort of his loving home. Two full seasons…

He had lost some weight, now looking a bit more slender than muscular. He hadn’t sparred with anyone either, so his muscle tone was looser as well. Taking a deep sigh, he urged on towards home. This was NOT the end of him looking for her, he told himself. He would have searched to the ends of the earth to find her, but he knew he should have informed his family before he did anything else. He should have informed them from the beginning, but he was too heartbroken and worried that something terrible had happened to Aryel. She was his best friend; actually, she was his first friend and had kept a special place in his heart. To him she was family and he would have done the same for anyone in his family, but Aryel… She was his home.

How was he going to explain this to Kri? It was just before he had to spar for the rank of general. He knew it was awful timing, but it was probably going to be a miracle if the herd even let him back in. It would look so bad, even if he did talk to Kri because it would seem as though he ran away. If they took it as him leaving it would be his second time and the herd would not like nor appreciate the irresponsible behavior. He just hoped that when he did see his family they would be accepting and forgiving. He had to find them now.

Perhaps it is fitting, that Gaucho is the first to arrive. After all, Levi was the one who welcomed Gaucho into Helovia, shouldn't he repay the favour?

Then again, do you see the broad blue stripes across Gaucho's chest? Those appeared when he challenged Levi for the rank of Sergeant, and Levi failed to show up. Although Gaucho would have much preferred to actually have beaten the grullo, rather than simply claiming his title, his failure to appear was evidence enough, that he was not fit to be called a Sergeant any longer.

From the skies, the muscular form of Gaucho descended; masked by the inky blackness that had over taken Helovia. His stormy gaze had acclimatized well to the moon and starlight that now twinkled across the persistent night, but it was nothing compared to the bright light of the sun that the bay was used to. Relentless, his patrols had persisted, darkness or not, and lately there had been much to patrol. Strangers on the border, enemies within the walls...and now...

"Leeev-eye?" It was almost a question. Almost. As Gaucho landed upon the compact ground, still not completely unfrozen from Frostfall, he eye'd Levi suspiciously. Gaucho's antlered brow remained raised, his steely gazed narrowed as his bulky black wings remained extended, as if to symbolically block Levi's way into the Throat.

Even Mara, who's reptilian body was not as agile as it would be when the warmer climates came, slithered into Gaucho's antlers to spy the stallion. Her forked tongue scented the air as her beady black eyes took in Levi's form. A low hiss escaped her throat, as she mentally prodded her primal carriage, as to whether or not they would attack. His mind was open to her, yet remained ambiguous, for even he did not know.

Time would tell, but the bay was sure that they would not be alone, for long.

Patrols went on smoothly, or as smoothly as they might in a world still frozen. The herd had fallen into a sleeve of almost ritualistic behavior. Walk, forage, do daily duties, sleep. Expected patterns seemed to be what was keeping everyone sane—changes were met with distaste and distrust. We were waiting, waiting to die—waiting for our Gods to return. Fina scouted ahead, she had been choosing to fly with me more and more since Cera had entered his adolescent stage. I welcomed the company, because usually it was only the whispering wind to talk with.

I’d recently made it a permit habit to be present along Throats border more often in light of recent events. A typical day would start with me picking an end and meeting Guacho and other militia somewhere in the middle. It was hard to tell how many hours the military flew in a single day—and I pitied the fool who tried to guess. My body was carried until the strained muscles in both wings started to cramp. Today it would seem that before our patrol could end, another straggler would have to be dealt with for crossing our lines. Fina chirped a warning and sent me an image of the beast that my Sergeant had run across. His rich pelt and wings belonged to none other than our missing comrade, Levi.

Angling down I touched earth beside the tall Gaucho and greeted said stallions with a warm but concerned smile, “Welcome, it lifts my spirit to see you.” He was thinner and likely malnourished, “Kri will be pleased to know you have returned home.”

The slight breeze comforted him as it caressed his face, his chest and down the back of his spine. It left a trail of Goosebumps behind. He was a bit tired, upset and homesick but he shook off the feelings. He wanted to keep himself together this time. The last time he had “runaway” he had gotten yelled at by Kri. It wasn’t even the type of yelling that Levi might be able to reason with, she just lost it and screamed. He took her words to the heart and yes it did hurt, but maybe Kri was just giving him a reality check. In the end though Levi was glad she did yell because it taught him that he shouldn’t be a sensitive filly anymore. He was a part of the Throat he had to be tough for his family. He guessed the time for crying was never or somewhere where they at least wouldn’t be able to know. Never on duty again he thought to himself.

The large build of a bay stallion caught the corner of his eye. Turning his head he examined the stallion more closely. He had weird tribal markings on him and a bone pierced through his nose. It had to be none other than his brother Gaucho. He wasn’t sure if Gaucho had called his name, but he was sure relieved to see him now. When the large beast landed, Levi looked at him first. He did not say a word. It was almost as though Gaucho was blocking his way into the Throat. Levi stood normally, almost confused. "“Gaucho, brother, I’m glad to see you.”" He said in a relief. The hiss of Mara startled Levi. He bit the bottom of his lip quickly to stop from losing it. He wasn’t too fond of snakes because of the last one who had joined the Throat. He had fooled us good and was a little two-faced rat going to the Basin. Levi narrowed his eyes at the thought, but took a deep breath and waited for a response from Gaucho.

Levi wanted to just blurt out everything that happened to share with Gaucho. He knew Gaucho would understand, sure, but it wasn’t a successful return. Levi was very angry because he did not return with Aryel, but he didn’t ever find her either. He had followed her trail for the longest time calling her name, searching, pleading for her… but she never ever stopped or said a word to say where she was going. Before Levi could even see her again she had disappeared.

Then another figure landed beside Gaucho. It was much smaller build of his figure, but still muscular. He was painted black and white with his companion Fina beside him. MIDAS! Levi thought with more relief. Levi has known Midas for quite some time and trusted Midas with all of his heart. He trusted Gaucho to, but Gaucho was acting kind of strange when he had arrived. “Welcome, it lifts my spirit to see you.” The golden heart chimed. “Kri will be pleased to know you have returned home.” Levi dipped his head to the general and Gaucho in respect, but he wasn’t so sure he agreed with what Midas had said. Kri would be happy? More like Kri would kick his ass! "“Thank you, brother,”" He said anyways "“it pleases me to see you as well. I have missed you both and I know it was irresponsible of me to leave without saying anything, but I didn’t think my journey would take this long.”" He paused looking towards the ground. "“I went to find Aryel. Once I knew she was missing I couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to her so I took off without hesitation to find her. I thought I would be able to bring her back within a few days, but even though I had followed her for two seasons which was much longer than I had expected, I never found her. I wanted to search more, but I knew I should have probably informed you in the first place, which I didn’t, so I came back.”" The tears started to swell in his silver orbs. He squeezed them shut to try and take the tears away. He was truly so worried about Aryel and was disappointed in himself that he could not find her. Pressing his gaze from Gaucho to Midas, he waited for a response.

But Gaucho did not move. He stood taller than Levi, and appeared even greater in stature as he raised his antlered brow towards the dark heavens. His broad chest was adorned with stripes, adding to the primitive markings that decorated his dark coat, visible under his impressive collar of sharpened bone spikes. His pierced nostrils flared as his towering body remained precisely where it was; indeed blocking Levi's way, as he believed. He would not allow entrance so quickly.

As Midas drew near, landing at his side, the beast turned his full attention to his smaller General. Internally, he was confused as to why My-dus was being so hospitable. Of course Levi should be welcomed back, but would nothing be said to him about his absence? Would he simply be allowed to join their fighting ranks again? As Levi called him brother, Gaucho's lip raised noticeably, in a feral sort of snarl. Brother? No. He thought, giving full attention to My-das. You are sheep, he thought of Levi.

Sheep. Something to be protected, that's all Levi was now. It would take much for the primal creature to place his trust in the hands of the grullo again.

Levi spoke with many words, as Gaucho was used to. For the most part, he droned them out, awaiting a command from My-das. Either to continue patrolling, or perhaps escort Levi to Kree...what ever it was My-das willed.

Of course Levi wouldn’t be able to just pop back into the Throat and reclaim his position. Not now and not later without some finagling and no small amount of grace. Fina cared not for any of this; she circled above, her eyes keeping watch whilst mine are distracted. I kept on smiling that same gentle understanding halfgrin. Taking a moment to simply be relieved that at least he hadn’t died out in the wilderness; though after speaking with our superiors he might later feel like returning to the wild.

The explanation leaves a lot to be desired; it was certainly irresponsible and foolish. Likely Kri was going to chew his ears and rake that thin pelt over the fire coals before everything was said and done—he would have much to prove before being greeted as brother again. She would still be thankful for his safe return in her own muggy way—a mixture of anger and love; that was how she reared us into hardened warriors. But if he had returned, then that much was at least known without me saying it.

His gaze swam, looking distant and heartbroken. I sighed, and resisted the urge to reach out--comfort my lost friend. We had been mates in battle. That much wasn’t easily forgotten, and when I loved, I loved strongly. Loyally. Guacho stood steely silent, I couldn’t guess what he was thinking but a sliding gaze suggested that he was waiting for orders. After Levi announced that he couldn’t find Aryel I answered with compassion, “I’m sorry your journey bore no fruit.” It was disappointing that life just…happened, “You will need to debrief with either Kri or Sumati, give them a full report.” Turning to Guacho I straightened my spine, and extended both wings to halfmast, “Guacho, please escort Levi to the Oasis-- see that he gets something to eat,” the lad was likely famished and weary, “and make sure that he talks to either Kri or Sumati.” Pausing for a moment I let my words take root before adding, “I’ll finish this round of patrols.” Flying would feel good.

Levi looked from Gaucho to Midas and then to Fina. He drew his silvery gaze, dipping his ears forwards as he listened to Midas’s words. The solider kept his attention on Midas while he listened, but many thoughts crossed his mind as the patterned general was talking. Would Kri really be mad? Would she kick him out? Would Sumati be mad? Would they kill him? He was unsure and nervous, but he did come back, didn’t he? Levi tried to appear calm on the outside and forced himself to look nonchalant, but really on the inside he was bursting with anxiety, wondering what was going to happen to him once he met up with Kri.

“That’s alright Midas, it wasn’t your fault…” He looked towards the ground again slightly before he started to talk more. “I understand, brother, thank you for everything and being so welcoming. I owe you.” He dipped his head with respect towards Midas and then slowly walked towards Gaucho as Midas disappeared to patrol once again. Levi had a few questions of his own for Gaucho as well. He wondered why Gaucho was patrolling. Only Sergeants were supposed to patrol mainly over where Gaucho had been. Suddenly it hit Levi. Did he lose his rank because he didn’t fight in the tourney? Levi’s heart melted with disappointment, but he knew he was going to have to ask sooner or later. “Gaucho?” He asked quietly. “Did I lose my rank while I was away for the tourney?” Holding his breath, he walked beside Gaucho waiting for an answer.

Gaucho grunted as Midas spoke, turning his massive body to squarely face Levi. Gaucho babysit. He thought to Mara, who hissed as if with amusement from his antlers. It certainly felt like babysitting, as Midas returned to the skies, leaving Gaucho to escort Levi. Levi who had recklessly abandoned his home to search for one member. Gaucho was not a leave-no-one-behind proponent. He was a Protect them all proponent - and should Levi had need aid to seek out Aryel, aid would have been provided. But to simply up and leave, and then return defeated! These were not actions the simply stallion wanted to condone. Still, he would do as Midas asked.

As they walked, Gaucho's dark ears flickered as Levi quietly inquired about his rank. Lose rank...away..tourney? Abruptly the bay halted, his large hooves digging forcefully into the soft sands. His nostrils flared as a loud snort escaped his dark muzzle, and his antlered brow swung towards his grullo companion. "No." He began sternly, stormy gaze looking upon his brother with an disapproving light. "I challenge you. You no come. You lose rank." Levi might have not been available for the tournament, but it had been Gaucho's call that Levi failed to answer.

The tournament was not the cause of his lost rank. Levi was the cause.

The warrior stared down Levi, waiting to see what he would do with the information. If he wished to challenge Gaucho for the rank, the beast would comply gladly, although Levi would be an idiot to attack him now, when the grullo was so clearly out of shape and lacking nourishment. From his antlers, Mara's beady black eyes gleamed bright, as she wriggled with excitement, sensing from her bonded's tone, that she might well be called into action.

Levi took Gaucho as being stand-off-ish and was not liking it at all. The grullo stallion was starting to get annoyed with the beast. Gaucho was snorting, huffing, and puffing. Quite frankly he was kind of acting like a foal that was upset by their mother not letting them go off to far, but if it were Gaucho who left their sandy home, including Levi, would have welcomed him back in open arms, without hesitations needed. No one would have held a grudge against the beast because they liked Gaucho. Well, if Levi hadn’t introduced him to the Throat, where would Gaucho be? . Levi stopped and listened to Gaucho, as his hooves stuck in the granules of sand. Levi clenched his jaw, fighting the temptation to speak. How could he act and talk so disrespectfully to Levi that he almost spat acid from his stomach? Levi let Gaucho finish. He stared up towards the towering stallion as the stallion looking disapprovingly down towards Levi. He felt the anger rising in his system. He did not like Gaucho winning his position by default. That was not fair, not fair indeed for either Gaucho or Levi.

“I’m not trying to be rude, Gaucho, but how could I know to challenge you if I wasn’t even there?” He said sort of annoyed. “I know I should have been there I know, I make many mistakes okay? I just want you to know that if were to be there; I would have challenged you for it. That way it would be fair.” He searched for Gaucho’s attention as he spoke. “How about this… I want to challenge you for my rank back. Not now, but soon. It would be foolish of me to now, just look at how horrible and out of shape I look! I’m not in any condition to fight, but when I am…” He paused to see if Gaucho was listening Will you accept my challenge, Gaucho?” He held his right wing out for Gaucho to tap. This was how he would know if Gaucho had accepted his challenge or not. If Gaucho tapped his wing, he would know that Gaucho would accept the challenge. If not, then Gaucho would not and he would have to earn his rank back in a different way.

It was clear that Gaucho was having difficulties following the mouthfuls of defences and justifications that Levi was throwing at him. His lips moved slightly, as if trying to capture the words as Levi spoke, and his dark ears swayed with the sounds. In his mind, Mara's mental pulses tried to direct Gaucho's thoughts with images she thought might be helpful to make him comprehend.

"Yes. You not there." Gaucho reiterated, as if this was the only point in the whole world that mattered. If he could, he might have said something about duty and honor - about sacrifice and not abandoning those you have sworn to protect, to follow after one who was meant to do the same. He might have called Levi reckless and selfish to have gone off as he did, but of course we know Gaucho isn't capable of formulating such sentences. Still, you not there seems to sum it up pretty well.

Snapping his tail against his hocks, Gaucho's impressive black wing span extended from his body, raising to their full width and making the beast appear even larger. He looked at Levi's extended wing curiously, as if Levi was the barbarian, and Gaucho the civilized one, trying to comprehend a strange gesture. "Gaucho always ready." He snapped back. He could tell Levi was using tone. He knew that tone was meant to be intimidating, or rude at times, though the beast couldn't understand why. Levi's words were nothing, and proved nothing. Let him try to wound Gaucho on the battle field, if he could.

His stormy gaze flickered uncertainly at Levi's outstretched wing. "Levi know where to find Gaucho. I ready."

Having brought Levi close enough to the Oasis to fulfill Midas' orders, Gaucho leaped into the air, with an odd grace. His dark tail trailed behind him as the dark endless night sky swallowed his primitive form.

[Feel free to challenge him any time after the Invasion ends ^^]
