Let's write our name in lightning among the stars
He had never been to a herd land that wasn't his before. Somehow the idea of it didn't appeal to him- there was so much to see where people didn't live, where there were no grown-up Sultans and Sultanas to tell him what to do and not do, so why would he willingly go somewhere with rules?

Because where else was he supposed to go to find Isopia, and explain to her that everything was OK, and make sure they were still friends, and give her her new gift?

He'd been working on it endlessly, for what felt like months, trying to find just the right rocks and metals and gems, to manipulate them into just the perfect shape. It had to be something that made sense for someone who liked to fly, small and light but still useful, that could move on its own but be carried too. In the days spent recovering the young engineer had focused all his excess energy on this conundrum, funneling frustration into the creation of his monster. In fact, he'd literally pulled off his own skin to do it.

The result was pretty damned good. But was it good enough?

Eventually the boy stopped, looking around uncertainly. Zero wasn't sure how far into the Falls he'd gotten, or even if he'd reached the Falls at all- and, he now realized, he had no idea how to find Iso even if he was in the Falls. Exasperation and aggravation filled his narrow chest, making him exhale loudly into the summer air. Why was this so hard? Why couldn't he just walk through this next little pack of trees and - bam! - stumble upon his very best friend, the same way he had that first day when they met?

Because on that day there had been nothing between them, and now there were a hundred things, a thousand things, writhing and confusing and too deep for the boy to closely inspect. Because what Zero knew was that he'd chosen the comfort of his Ma over the defense of his friend, and what Zero didn't know was how much he'd hurt her in doing it. Iso'd been the one to give him the strength to jump, but Ma'd been the one to catch him when he fell, and he loved them both and hated them both at the same exact time, because couldn't they see that he was both? He was brave but also foolish, strong but also weak? Why did they have to fight to make him one or the other, and not let him be him?

He sighed, and pushed this thought from his head. It was far more serious than Zero liked his thoughts to get, and today wasn't about serious and sadness. It was about proving to Iso that he was ok, and grateful, and sorry.

So the boy walked on through the next patch of trees, because if she wasn't behind this one maybe she'd be behind the next, or the one after that, and he wouldn't stop looking until he'd peeked behind every tree in Helovia, sunbeam eyes and lightning heart eagerly seeking out his friend.
