Orithia couldn't help the smile that sprang to her lips as her eyes beheld the pair of foals; a boy and a girl, the perfect mixture of their mother and father. The pale woman had not moved from her place hidden in the tree line, had not made a single sound since the labor had begun. She would make no move to assist Rexanna or the children, no, she was merely here to observe and report, to make sure that the golden splashed mare had not been lying when she claimed the child (well, children, now) were Tembovu's.
A slight fluttering stirred in the mare's chest, an echo of adoration that she struggled to tamp down. No, she told herself, You cannot love these children. There are other plans for you. With a deep breath, the air tinged with the faint scent of blood and sweat, Orithia steeled herself against her heartsong. There was no place for her at the table of motherhood and she would not deign to beg for the attentions and love that was reserved for those who belonged. Exhaling slowly through her nostrils, the blushed mare took in the sight of the gangly cherubs, the onyx and gold and ivory and blue - the beautiful new shades of the Plainswalker King's brood.
If only Rexanna knew that the mare she resented would have laid her life at the feet of giants for those two tiny lives.
But she would never know and she would never care, and with that, Orithia gave one last longing glance toward the foals before turning and vanishing back into the forest.
