You there! I demand my money back. Instead of what I ordered, I was delivered a pair of woolen socks- I can't wear these! They're much too warm for summer. Plus, they don't match; one is, how horrific, tattooed while the other is... I don't care how expensive or exotic a brand they are, I just want my good old sport socks!

0 | "demand my money back" - as you said, very vague and not really a clue. I never would have gotten "wanted to kill her" from "demand my money back." This really suggests an exchange of some sort.
0 | "instead of what I ordered" - as you said, very vague and not really a clue. This doesn't allude to a "mutant" in any way. It just makes me think of someone unwanted.
-1 | "they don't match" - though I feel that this is a step in the right direction, ultimately I don't feel that it worked for a color clue, or for a hint towards something "wrong or freakish."
+1 | "much too warm for summer" - acceptable fire hint.
+1 | "tattooed" - good appearance hint.
+1 | "expensive or exotic a brand" - demigods would indeed be exotic. Also, expensive in that light could mean valuable, as demigods arguably are.

Ultimately I feel that there was a lot of fluff and not very many actual clues. A lot of times when trying to hide clues, people tend to go wayyy overboard. You had some good things in here - the tattoo clue was your best, for sure, and the expensive/exotic brand had promise if put into the right context, but there was just too much for me.
