A bleak and bitter sun had risen over their journey. The moon had fallen from her perch in the sky, dethroned by the first arcing spears of sunlight as one by one the stars caved in beneath the pressure of the Sun. The navy backdrop of the sky grew lighter and lighter, until it, for a moment, matched the bleakness of the light. Mauja's crowned head rose. A dismal morning to match the dismal mood of the trio moving painstakingly across the face of Helovia.

He wasn't sure where it had gone wrong, or even if it had gone wrong at all, but the fact remained that his memories were full of little girls arguing and crying.

And that blasted illness that made his blood boil with anger. How dared the Gods expand Helovia at the price of lives? How dared they butt heads with corrupted Gods and then just leave their subjects to take the blows, and reap what the divine had sowed? His teeth ground against one another for a moment. It was hard to shake the image of a dead Aviya, of all those blistered, bleeding sides, of black mucus dripping down muzzles—

It was hard to forgive the kind of short-sighed foolishness that had broadened the horizons of Helovia with little thought of how it would affect the inhabitants.

But anger was an ineffective cure. If the flames of his fury could purify, the world would've burned a long time ago.

Irma came gliding in with the morning light, a silent ghost descending through the slowly warming air. Mauja paused where he was. The ground had begun to slope gently upwards towards a horizon of evergreens and fog, but they weren't there yet. And already, they had gone far, and both of his travel companions were young. One was ill, the other tired. His 'brows drew together.

Well, fuck that. There wasn't much he could do about it, except what he was already doing. When they burst, some of Areli's boils bled water as well as pus—the aftermath of Mauja silently numbing the afflicted areas with ice. He wasn't sure she would've agreed if he'd asked her—hadn't he caused her enough already? But he couldn't escape the lodestone of guilt that had begun to sink towards the floor of his soul, and if he could ease just a little of her pain...

He turned back to his owl; her wide wings blocked out the rising sun, cast his face into shadow as her talons briefly touched the bridge of his nose.

I will find her, the owl said, her voice a cold whisper in the back of his mind. "Go," he murmured, and she disappeared, leaving behind a single drop of red where his skin had broken. She sped away with the same eerie quiet as she had come, gone to hunt the forest for a white lion and his iron bride.

Mauja turned back to the girls—Areli, and Galiel. One who smelled of the Falls, and one who had come from beyond Helovia.

And both had had the inexplicable stroke of bad fortune of running into him.

"It's just up ahead," he told them, falling back into stride, heading towards the treeline and the broken glass wall he knew laid beyond them. And perhaps they would be close enough, if she happened to be out on patrol—

"NYX!" he yelled at the looming forest, voice piercing the fogs. "NYX!"

[ @Galiel and @Areli first please! Tagging @Nyx because he's yelling for her. Shady, if you want me to change his using magic on her let me know and I will! ^^ Basically, he's just forming small ice crystals in the affected areas to numb her nerves. ]

The dirty stopout returns, sheepish, slinking back into the Edge with lowered posture and bubbling embarassment. It's the walk of shame, the morning after the night before. The storm has long since faded, as has the heat of the passion that drove her into the blood bay's arms, and him into her waiting thighs. She'd had a spring in her step as she left her lover and crossed the lands towards the Edge, wielding a bouncy trot that quite clearly said I got laiiiiiiid. But now she crosses into the borders of her home, her body language is the polar opposite - there's no arrogance, no swagger, no swing of her hips that comes from being made a woman again. There's only a burning sense of worry, that more may come of this than a simple, sweet release.

Because, of course, no sin goes unpunished. She fears what her herdmates may think if they find out, if some vengeful God shows them glorious technicolour images of her primal tryst. She'll be unable to perform her duties for the duration of her pregnancy, and will undoubtedly be slut shamed the world over for the fact she'd had longer relationships with dung piles than she'd had with the father of her child. So many repercussions could come of this, so many things that didn't occur to her during her heat-fuelled lust but which now hit her in the cold light of day with the force of a dropped anvil. And yet, and yet, there's that eon-old craving to be a mother again, which overrides common sense. To breed and raise a soldier, an upstanding citizen of the Edge who exudes power and is proud to call her his mother - a war-child, her genetics imprinted onto Helovian soil for evermore.

So, with those conflicting emotions, she decides it's best just to not dwell on it. She forces all petty woman-problems to the back of her mind, and concentrates on acting as normal as she possibly can - although the I got the D glint in her eye might be something of a giveaway.

Thankfully, a bellow pierces the air which quickly draws her attention away from her mental state. Nyx! Despite the heavy irony of a man screaming her name at this particular moment, the silver is quick to heed the command of her king. She stumbles through fog-dotted land, eerily reminiscent of her fight with the same man who now beckons her. She still aches from her spar with the blood bay and the other ensuing 'physical exercise', but that is forgotten as her limbs automatically haul her into a gallop. Aside from a distinct tingling tenderness around her nethers, it's almost as though yesterday did not happen - as though it was just a figment of her overactive, horny imagination.

Finally she sees him, a frozen ghost on the horizon with two shadowy figures nearby. It's these figures that her eyes are dragged to, like moths to a flame. "Jesus," she mutters, furrowing an unamused brow at the trio. What's Mauja brought back with him, the bubonic fucking plague? Those boils. Like seeing them on Sergeant Spots himself wasn't bad enough, it seems he has spread the joy to at least one of the fillies. How kind. It also begs the question of what he's doing with two yearlings in the first place - they're a bit young to be the starting point of his harem. This musing, though, takes second fiddle to the walking medical bill that he's brought so casually into their home.

With a small stab of concern, she wonders if it is infectious, and feels herself tense slightly, unbidden. Her child...Could the disease harm it? But there may not BE a child, she reminds herself. But there may be. She's not stupid - she did the diddle, in heat, with a very virile young stallion. Add a dash of guilt on the side and she has the potent recipe for Offspring Pie. Again, she banishes the thoughts to a deep, dark corner of her mind. "What's going on?"

Go, go, go. Walk, walk, walk. Hurry, hurry, hurry. The stallion lead Areli and I away from the forested area in which we had met, and pushed us further…deeper into the lands of this place. This world. Many a time did I wish I had chosen differently because the journey was so long, so far, that it seemed near the point of insanity to travel it all in what remained of the night.

‘He’s crazy,’ I thought to myself every few minutes, ‘He’s crazy and daft and stupid and…and,’ my thoughts faltered as I began to put the puzzle pieces together. He’s sick and got Areli sick. He thinks he knows somebody who can help Areli at this edge of the world. He was pushing for us to get there before daybreak thus tiring us both to our limits. He…he was smart. At least, if what I was thinking was his game plan was his game plan then he was smart.

Quickly I looked from the spotted stallion ahead and then to Areli who was a few feet to my side. The spotted rash seemed to only be getting worse as we travelled. Every now and then a spot would raise up, become all red and icky looking and then it would explode only to reveal and release some sort of yellowish white fluid that’s texture was akin to that of mud with small pebble stones in it. I couldn’t help but also notice that every time one of those raised areas exploded Areli seemed to wince and whimper in pain and the furry thing did too. Whatever Areli had, it sure looked painful and gross and I definitely didn’t want to experience such a thing.

“Are ve zere yet?” I managed to call out to the stallion through a yawn. As I finished asking the age old question a bird flew towards us and the stallion stopped in his tracks. Were we here? What was with the bird anyway? Did everybody here have some sort of pet or creature that they loved? And what in the world did the stallion mean by a magical disease anyways? I mean I know that there are diseases, my mother would help the sick in my homeland, but there was no magic about anything. She would use things like plants and mosses and water from different places to help others get better. Magic didn’t exist as far as I knew.

Just as soon as the bird had arrived it began to fly away and I could have sworn I heard the spotted stallion utter the word go but I couldn’t be sure. Heavy eyes looked at the stallion as he turned back to Areli and I. He mentioned something along the lines of how this place was up ahead and then began yet again to walk. This time uphill. A heavy sigh pushed out of my lungs and into the air as I forced my hooves to move despite them seeming to grow heavier with each passing minute.

“Hey,” I whispered over to Areli as I suddenly remembered the pieces of the puzzle I thought about earlier, “Sumzing doesn’t seem to be right about him. Am I right?” I took a quick glance at the stallion in front of us. Why else would someone who was sick go out and socialize with little girls? Certainly something was off, “If sumzing seems to be very bad, I’ll yell. I yell and ve run, got et?” Tired as I may have been, I was not stupid.

I looked at Areli with my blue eyes hoping, praying that she was on the same page as I was. Then I looked down to the pendant I wore around my neck. Two crescent moons encircling a smaller full moon – my family crest. It swung from side to side as I walked – it’s rough metal texture glinting in the waning moonlight as the night was ending and daylight beckoned for all creatures to arise from their slumber. Long ago mother gave it to me and told me to wear it with pride. Now it merely served as a reminder of what I had lost. My mother, my father, my brother. My entire family was gone and my home…the Celestial Wood was merely a place that would be lost to the ravages of time.

There was no home anymore.

NYX! The stallion’s booming voice startled me out of my somber thoughts and I looked around wondering who or what was this Nyx? Before I knew it though a pale figure appeared from the top of the hill and came towards us. Was this the Nyx person that the stallion was referring to and if not then who were they? Any who, the pale figure ended up being a mare and eventually she stopped after what felt like giving us a visual examination and then asked what was going on.

As if it wasn’t obvious.

Was this really the person that was supposed to help Areli? Because, to me, this person felt more like more muscle. After all it was now two adults versus Areli and I – two yearlings. Just what did the stallion have in mind? Was he up to something or was he truly being as kind as he said he was going to be? I could only hope that he wasn’t a viper hiding within the tall grass. Not just for my sake, but for Areli’s too.

Areli
the flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly

It had been one of the worst nights of her young life, and as the sun began to peek over the horizon, Areli had a suspicion that it would become one of the worst mornings as well. Whimpering and exhausted, she had followed Mauja back to the Edge with the ever-suspicious Galiel in tow. Even now, the other girl lingered at the fringe of the group, looking sideways at the large stallion with decidedly shifty eyes—not that Areli paid this much mind, for she was too busy cringing and sniffling. Her sobs had quieted long ago when her throat had grown hoarse from wailing. Now only pained moans parted her lips as each boil burst and spattered the forest floor with the distasteful combination of pus and blood. And water too, thanks to Mauja’s magic, which she unwittingly succumbed to. It was good that he hadn’t asked her, for fearing the pain she would have surely declined. She trusted him to help her, but she was not immune to the fearful stubbornness of children who refuse healing antiseptic in dreaded anticipation of its sting.

Even when they crossed into the Edge, Areli’s spirits remained low. Though she had often imagined coming home to her birthplace and playing amongst the tall trees once more, she hadn’t quite envisioned it like this. The familiar old scent of the pines comforted her slightly, but it did not ease the pain that enveloped her body. Head hanging, she didn’t have the inclination to do much reminiscing.

“Hey,” the sharp whisper cut into her hazy thoughts. “Sumzing doesn’t seem to be right…” Wearily, she turned her head back, lids heavy over her gold eyes as Galiel expressed her doubts about their escort in an undertone. The other filly might be worried, but Areli merely shook her head listlessly. “He said he would help,” she replied, keeping her voice low without bothering to whisper. “Besides, I know this place. We’ll be safe here,” she added. The dark filly hesitated slightly, not knowing how else to reassure her mistrustful new companion. But she didn’t have much of a chance anyway. Without warning, the stallion’s voice was suddenly ringing through the misty wood. “NYX!” he bellowed, startling Areli. Her neck shot up and she cast her gaze about wildly, looking for the cause of the commotion. And lo and behold, out of the fog came sweeping a unicorn mare of the same color.

She only took one look at Areli before her expression furrowed into concern. Though she questions what’s going on, the yearling leaves that for Mauja to explain. He had brought them here, after all.

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
“Are ve zere yet?”

Aside from the sounds of their travel—hoof beats thudding down irregularly, whimpers and moans, labored breathing—it was the first sound any of them made in a long, long time. The fragility of their silence was shattered there on the doorstep of the forest. Somewhere, deep beyond the gently sloping treeline, lay the white cliffs. "Soon," he had answered. Who had known how efficient a fuel guilt was.

But oddly enough, his own sores hadn't come back—they remained a badlands of healing crusts and scabs. Dry, unlike the weeping mess upon Areli.

He didn't really know what to make of it. Had Nyx's little shock just been a bizarre coincidence, or had it healed him? Was he infecting others, despite them not returning to him?

Questions without answers, and it seemed unlikely any of the Gods would bother to answer him if he asked. 'Oh, you know, we thought you needed a challenge, so we said, hey, why not let them get sick and figure out what to do about it on their own!' Like, what the actual fuck.

But he had already spent so long being angry about it that it was barely more than a shiver in his soul—not even a spark.

Galiel and Areli were mumbling about something, but his black-rimmed ears paid them little heed. Obviously, they didn't want him to hear, and much as he wanted to know what they were saying, he didn't want to pry. Leaning down with one ear cocked was a bit too obvious, so instead, he focused on the forest and the fog as he kept walking.. walking.. walking...

And finally, there in the pale sunlight, was Nyx. Bleak yellow struck the silver curves of her body, and drowned in the dim darkness of her hair. Nothing, except perhaps a lingering scent he was too unfocused to discern and recognize, told the tale of her little evening jaunt the night before, and so, it passed under his radar.

"Nyx," he greeted her, her name a sigh of relief. "What's going on?" she questioned, and rightly so. He fought the urge to say she was promoted to babysitter—it hardly felt like the time to joke around.

Because he had brought this down on them.

"This is Galiel, and Areli," he began, motioning to each in turn. "Areli, eeeerrhhh.. caught a spot of misfortune in coming too close to me. You know when you walked into me a couple of nights ago? With your shield? Believe it or not but this shit started healing up after that, but apparently I'm still contagious. I thought.. maybe you could do the same to her?" There was a faint note of pleading in his voice, in his eyes, those guilt-ridden seas of blue—because he had caused this, he had to fix it, and Nyx was his only hope in making this journey worth all of Areli's tears.

No pressure.

She looks between the fillies and back to her spotted monarch, still none the wiser. Unless he just wants her to be the welcoming committee for them, which she supposes she can manage. She can throw on a grin and welcome them to the Edge with all due deference, show them around, teach them how to be warriors. But that doesn't explain why Mauja called for her like his life depended on it, like the damn devil was on his heels.

He introduces the duo - Galiel and Areli. "I'm Nyx, one of the herd's warriors," comes her reply. Despite their differing appearances, Nyx comes to the conclusion that they are related, with their similar names. At that moment, a nearby shrub ruffles and Dominus emerges from it, dragging a deer's bloodied haunch behind him. With his white fur doused with red and his lips peeled back from the hooked teeth clasped around the meat, he cuts an imposing figure, and likely not one the fillies will want to see during their first foray into a strange land. The silver winces, silently bidding him to take his dinner elsewhere, but he doesn't listen. He stayed away during her spar with the blood bay and the ensuing steamy encounter, but his self-imposed exile away from her has come to an end. He sees no reason why he shouldn't be part of this gathering, so with a hungry glare at the two yearlings, he settles himself between Nyx's forelegs to rip noisily at his catch.

The ironheart glares down at him, shaking her horned head. Before she can introduce him, Mauja speaks again, and his words leave her with narrowed eyes and a slightly dropped lower jaw. Remember when you walked into me, with your shield? "Vividly," is the silver's sardonic response, although there's another flash of guilt about her accidental shocking of her king. From what he says, though, her inadvertant attack had cured him of the boils that plagued him - God knows how, but she isn't going to complain. His request is what leaves her with a flabbergasted expression, one ear forward and one ear back - she hasn't even said hello to the poor lass yet! Nice to meet you, can I frazzle you?

"You know how to make the Edge seem appealing, don't you? Welcome to our herd, come and be zapped!" That's one hell of an initiation ceremony. Her expression turns serious and she looks to the pegasus - Areli, her pretty young frame scarred by hideous boils. "The choice is yours - Areli, is it? I'm not going to frazzle you against your will, but if you want to give it a go, I'm right here." Shutting her eyes, she focuses on drawing her magic out of her body and onto it, covering herself in a thin shield of ice with an electrical current running through it. Dominus yelps as a spark jumps from her foreleg and touches him, and he stomps away with a expression of disgust to eat his dinner a short distance apart from the group. When Nyx's eyelids open, she looks to Areli in what she hopes is a warm and welcoming way, inviting the girl to come over and touch her electrified booty.

Soon? Was that all that the stallion could say? Soon. It was the type of reply an adult would give when they just wanted to stave off a child’s irksome behavior – which was precisely where I think I had landed. I’m sorry but after a night with next to no sleep and travelling what seemed like the entire world one such as myself probably would start to become a little annoying.

Next stop! Mild insanity.

Perhaps Areli was already at that stop, but despite that being a very big possibility, her response to my earlier whispers seemed to comfort me slightly. Somehow she knew this edge of the world place we were headed and seemed to be sure that we’d be safe. Even though I was just slightly less on edge, I was still watching everything as if danger lurked around some unforeseen corner.

Before I know it, the stallion is introducing us to the mare before us all. Nyx she says is her name and she even reveals herself as a herd warrior. A warrior? A WARRIOR?! What in the world was this stallion planning behind our backs? There was no chance in…in…in hell that we could stand up to both of them now! Not with two of…

What was that?!

My head snaps at a rustle in a group of nearby bushes and suddenly I’m on alert. Then…it…emerged. I could feel my ice blue eyes widen as the blood covered feline dragged a leg of its kill over to the mare. A leg. It killed something and something big. With eyes locked on the creature, my body and the world surrounding seemed to freeze. There…there was so much…blood. Cold chills washed over me as the thing stared at me. It was almost like the thing was thinking about eating me. I gulped. A jittery feeling began to grow deep within my stomach as I held my ever fearful gaze on the creature that was just tearing away at the limb he had brought here. What if…what if that was someone Areli or I knew? Were we simply just corralled over to this land just so we could satiate this beast’s hunger pains? Were we merely just a sacrificial collection to the two adults here? What the hell was going on?!

Breaths became uneven the longer I stared at the creature covered in blood. The blood of the person or thing it killed. With that simple thought my sanity began to waver as dreams, memories, and reality meshed together. The leg that was being eaten morphed itself into the body of Areli. Only, I didn’t know how it was Areli. The thing was so broken, so bloodied that she was almost indistinguishable. Then to either side laid the bodies of my parents. They had obviously been dead for some time as their bodies were no longer the vibrant colors I remembered them to be and their eyes…their eyes were completely white - glazed over with a film that bore one of death’s colors. Slowly a crimson colored pool seemed to rise out of the ground, racing towards me with bloodied fingers seeming to grasp and claw their way through the blades of grass. So I stepped backwards to avoid it.

I wanted to scream, wanted to yell at the top of my lungs at the creature who seemed to be eating Areli, wanted to run out of here like hell on wheels. But I knew…I knew it couldn’t be real. Something in my heart started screaming for me to snap back to reality. Maybe it was because I knew Areli was just to my side or perhaps it was the fact that it was naught but impossible that my parents’ corpses would magically travel from the Celestial Wood to…well…wherever this place was. Whatever it was it helped me gain a grasp back on reality (but not without shedding a single tear) only to realize I must have missed a lot while I was having my interpersonal breakdown.

First my eyes looked to Areli, who still looked to be in pain. Then I looked to the stallion that brought us here. Hm. Did they move forward or did I really move backwards? Then my eyes fell upon the mare ahead and…and I didn’t know how to act.

Part of me wanted to scream and run.

Part of me wanted to examine whatever the hell she was doing.

Silently, I watched from afar – not daring to budge an inch closer. What in the world was she doing? What was the point of whatever she was doing? Hairs on my neck began to feel like they were standing on end as some sort of…er thing covered her. Suddenly a spark seemed to travel from her leg and onto the creature sitting between her legs. The beast yelps and with his yelp I jump back a little ways and the beast seems to also head off as well.

Lightning?

Once I had the um unpleasant experience of seeing what happens when a tree is struck by lightning. Father had even told me numerous times never to fly through a storm ever because of the lightning. He always said that it would kill if I would try. But how in the world was Nyx able to hold lightning to her body and with no storms about either. It was almost as if she was sick or the lightning was being produced by…

“Majick,” the word slips through my lips as my eyes widen out of surprise. It was the only explanation I could think of, but mother and father had always said that magic didn’t exist and so I had believed them. But there really was no other way to explain what was going on.

“How is zis possible? Majick is not real. Muzzer and Fazzer told me…” I paused as I looked once more at Nyx and then to the stallion and Areli as I slowly took a few steps backwards out of a confused fear, “Vat is going on here? Vere am I? Vat is zis place?”

The words came spilling out in a frantic manner but who could blame a girl for acting as such when she didn’t know where she was, who she was with exactly, had just watched a beast eat the leg of something, and just see magic for the first time in her life.

Areli
the flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly

Miserable all through the introductions, Areli had barely glanced at Nyx. Though self-centeredness lay at the heart of the matter (instead of willful malice or intentional disrespect), Parelia would have skewered her alive had she seen her daughter’s rudeness. Manners had always been important to her mother, yet somehow she hadn’t quite managed to impart them upon her more freespirited daughter. Her boils were hurting too much to give much priority to ceremony, and Areli was too exhausted to bother with it all. However, the stranger got her attention when the pale lion stalked out of the bushes covered from tongue to tail in blood.

Of course, Areli had seen her father’s tiger often enough that she didn’t turn tail and flee on the spot, but a startled shriek still escaped her lips at his unanticipated and gruesome appearance. Bee yelped and dove between her legs, eyes wide as she  gazed upon the lion, only loyalty to her mistress holding her to the yearling’s side. While she surmised that the creature must be Nyx’s companion (judging from the former’s unruffled appearance at the sight of the bloody predator), Areli shifted nervously, looking to Mauja for comfort.

However, it was the mare who spoke. While she hadn’t been paying much attention as Mauja voiced his idea, Areli guessed that she was some sort of healer. “The choice is yours,” she was saying, “I’m not going to frazzle you against your will—” Wait, the girl thought, frazzle? A sudden hum filled the air, and Areli’s gold eyes widened anxiously as she watched even the sour-faced lion leap away from the sparks that danced off of Nyx’s forelegs. Beside her Galiel began to babble confusedly, accented voice running wildly up and down. Frightened, Areli’s ears fell sideways. But it was all too much for Bee, whose fur stood on end with terror and static. Just as Areli sidestepped in uncertainty, the wolf made a break for the bushes. Unable to catch herself, the dark filly stumbled over her companion and lost her balance, pitching forward…and right into the electric embrace that awaited.

OOC: Apologies for the delay!

but somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
If Mauja had thought their gathering was fucked-up and tense, it was nothing compared to how fucked-up and tense it was going to get. Nyx introduced herself as a warrior, with the sterling kind of pride and precision she seemed to carry everything out with, and from the corner of his eye Mauja saw Galiel sort of .. freeze up? Widen her eyes? He couldn't put his hoof on what it was, because it was brief and fleeting, just a heartbeat's thing—she didn't have time to properly display whatever it was she was going to be feeling, because it was at that time that Dominus chose to make his rather untidy and gruesome entrance. And whatever it was that had been on Galiel's face was replaced with blanked-out terror of some kind as she moved back, miraculously not tripping over anything. Areli, on the other hand, seemed to take it in stride, though her wolf cub did not.

And Mauja, he just furrowed his 'brows, fighting the urge to run in behind Galiel and herd her back, because if the way the creamy girl had been looking at him ever since they first met was anything to go by, she already thought he was shifty enough as it was, without him trying to forcibly keep her here. So he just turned his pained gaze down to the blood-stained lion and his deer haunch, and wrinkled his dark nose. "Disgusting," he told the beast, an echo of what both Irma and Diego thought of the situation—it was too messy, too gory, not enough finesse and precision .. he was a lowly slave gorging on soup with his whole face down the bowl, while the owls sat at their high table and ate with silver cutlery and dabbed their lips with napkins. Of course, that kind of thing rubbed off on Mauja.

"You know how to make the Edge seem appealing, don't you? Welcome to our herd, come and be zapped!" A weak and watery grin spread across his face. Nyx seemed to have some sassy remark for everything—at times it was a blessing, at times a curse, and somewhere deep down he wondered what kind of shit she had been through that she was so used to dealing with everything with comic relief. "Well," he muttered mildly, not wanting to stall it longer with idle chatter, "at least we're unique?" And Nyx's skin began to spark, little currents running along the ice forming along her skin; one of them jumping to the lion and sending him off with his meal, and Mauja huffed in mild amusement. Served the bloody predator right for scaring his girls.

“Majick [...] Vat is going on here? Vere am I? Vat is zis place?” And Galiel was backing again, even as Areli shimmied on the spot, and her wolf cub ran in between her feet sending her tripping straight into Nyx and ouch

Mauja winced. He knew what it felt like, to get all of those icy little nubs embedded in your skin, and the jolt going through your body like a whiplash—he looked aside, drifting over to poor Galiel instead, hoping she would not run from him. "It's okay," he called out to her, voice gentle, eyes gentle, black-rimmed ears flicked forward in the white mess of his mane. "Don't be afraid, no one will hurt you here." And unless she would retreat from him, he would attempt to reach out, to gently touch her forehead with his muzzle, blow hot air against her in an attempt to soothe—but in all reality, he expected her to bolt like a startled rabbit, hightailing for safety (and away from a disease that required such a shocking cure).

Still.. one can always hope, right?

I was going to wait for RE to post but I think since the disease event seems to be finished, RE isn't posting about cures anymore?

One of the fillies appears afraid of Dominus, and the lion fixes her with a ravenous gaze whilst lazily, darkly kneading his claws against the bones of his kill. Stop that, you're scaring her, the silver mentally hisses at him, but it's like talking to a brick wall. Majick. The girl's voice is heavily accented, and Nyx's interested gaze lingers on her as she continues. "Sorry, squirt, but magic is real. You're in Helovia, and here anything is possible. We'll make sure you don't come to harm, though." She spares a glance to Mauja, surprised he didn't explain all this to them on the way over here. Surely that's the first thing you do when you bring someone from the borders, to point out that here there be monsters?

Mauja declares the lion's eating to be disgusting, and there's a crack as Dominus smugly snaps the bone in half, then uses one hooked talon to scrape out the juicy marrow from the centre as though to prove quite how disgusting he is. "The lion's name is Dominus - don't be afraid of him, he won't hurt you." The white beast releases a sinister snort and fixes his sharp blue eyes on the filly, shards of shattered bone poking between his teeth. "Don't be so su-u-u-uuuure," is his singsong response to Nyx, but when she flattens her ears at him, he snorts and returns to plucking out the marrow without terrorising either of the girls further.

For the first time, Nyx notices the young companion nestled between the second filly's legs. She's just wondering what the little thing is when Areli proceeds to trip over it...and right into Nyx's electrified body. Whoopsie. The silver stands for a second to ensure the girl gets the full effect, before hauling herself smartly backwards before she can cause too much agonising damage to the poor youngster. She grimaces as she sucks her magic back inside, shaking off the remaining tingly residue. "Are you okay?" It'll probably have hurt, a lot, to be suddenly and unceremoniously zapped, and the mare fixes the youngster with her concerned glance. More concern than she'd usually possess, anyway - perhaps due to the child brewing within her own womb, making her that bit more maternal than usual. Even Mauja extends his muzzle to try and comfort the filly, and Nyx is hardpressed to contain her shock at the ice man's sudden affection. Maybe cute little children bring out his inner fluffy beastie. Not for the first time she wonders if he has children of his own - but that would involve him screwing someone, and that...is not something she can picture. Well, she can, but...no, let's not. Besides, would the world not implode if Mauja got laid? He always seems so pure, like driven snow. He dabbles in murder, that's apparent, but the other nefarious deed just seems so...below him, somehow. Like he's above such dirtyness.

Ah, the musings she has when she's afraid she's just kentucky fried an innocent child. Her king's sex life isn't what she thought would pop into her head, but hey-ho, it just did.

It…it just kept staring at me. The bloody monster kept staring…at me. Why? Why me? Why?! If it were possible for my eyes to widen anymore they would have, but alas it was not possible. The blood. All of the blood. It was everywhere. Everywhere. Flashes of memories from the Celestial Wood littered my sight. Memories of me finding the entire herd murdered and dead. Hot salty tears stung my eyes as Nyx spoke to me – calling me squirt. Magic is real she says. I’m in Helovia she says. Anything is possible she says. No harm will come to me she says.

But she was wrong.

Falling into a daze, I miss the words that the spotted stallion and Nyx say about the beast. I miss their actions between each other. I just keep falling into this dark pit, trying to grab hold onto the sides somehow but never grabbing hold anywhere. I just keep falling deeper into the hole.

Then Areli begins to move and it’s as if I’ve found a little ledge to stand upon. My icy blues dart towards her as she tries to sidestep away from Nyx and her lightning magic. Yes, away from it. Surely there was some other way, some safer way to heal the sickness she had.

And then she falls. Straight into Nyx and her lightning magic.

A scream pierces the air like a bullet, though I didn’t realize it was me screaming the word no. All I realized was that Areli, my…friend, pretty much just fell to what could have been her death. And that ledge that I had sought purchase on within my hole…well I was just thrown off of it. Once again I found myself falling deeper into the dark depths of the hole. Never to return.

Or so I thought.

Tears streamed down my face as I just stared at the ground. Ears twitched at the sound or someone approaching me and my mind began to yell at me. Run it said. Run. But I couldn’t. My legs wouldn’t move, my body wouldn’t even listen. RUN! Muscles spasmed within my legs as they began to register what my mind was trying to tell them, but it was already too late. Despite wanting to run away, I guess my body had just had handled too much to do so.

‘It’s okay.’ His voice rings out to me within my descent into darkness. Before I knew it he was telling me not to be afraid and that no one would hurt me here. Then he touched my forehead and blew air.

It was like a switch had flipped inside me. Instead of falling, I started rising but at the same time something started growing within me. Something that I never realized I had until now: courage.

“No!” I yell through my tears at the stallion while I pull away from him and then proceed to try to hit him repeatedly with my head as if I had a horn like he did, “No, no, no, no, no, no! Nuzing is okay! Nuzing!” My tears fall faster now but they burn with anger this time rather than fear, “You say you help us. You say you tell us everyzing ve needed to know!” I’m yelling at him and trying to hit him at the same time, but then my body decides it has had enough. Out of exhaustion, my legs collapse beneath me and I fall to the ground in a sobbing heap.

“But you haven’t even told us your name yet,” my voice softens as I devolve from anger to sadness. Surrendering to the fact that even though I was finally trying to stick up for something, there was nothing more that I could do beyond speak, so I let loose.

“You killed zem didn’t you?!” I asked him through my tears without even looking at him, “Muzzer. Fazzer. Bruzzer. Ze whole herd!” I paused between listing each of my deceased family members. Sobs racked through my body as I thought about them. All of them.

And now he had me.

Despite not wanting to look at him, I did. I looked up at the spotted stallion with puffy blue eyes and tear stained cheeks as I could only ask him more thing, “Vhy?” I muttered, “Vhy you do zis? Vhy!?” I’m almost yelling my last word but I was growing too tired to even do that. But it didn’t matter anymore, if he really did kill my family, my herd…everyone I ever knew and loved, I was surely the next to go.

So much for a long life of happiness like I had dreamed of so very long ago. Hello torturous agony and death.
