The old stallion doesn't care one tiny bit that the treat he receives is completely valueless, that he could have scooped up debris from the very ground around them and fashioned the thing himself. He only cares that the shadow creature has given him something, given him something, freely and without any apparent desire for thanks or compensation - which is perfect because he wouldn't have given either even if the creature had desired it.
He grabs for the thin string with its decorative dead leaf and marches through the crowd of mixed reactions as if the garbage necklace were made of fine silk strands and adorned with priceless jewels. Away from the center of the commotion he even goes so far as to give the little thread a playful toss, the movement quickly stifled as drag in the air starts to tear at the leafs brittle center where something small and sharp has punched a hole for the string to run through.
He ignores the baffled and more than a little concerned staring of his companion. None but the unfortunate few who have had everything in the world and then lost it or else had it viciously taken from them can appreciate the signifigance of charity for charity's own sake, no matter how carelessly or maliciously granted. He considers the garbage necklace a gift and tucks it happily away in the folds of his backward scarf, careful to set it atop the more sturdy trinkets already housed there.
