Balé
The Innocent

Once he had mentioned a fire, Nayati looked puzzled. She rose her head to look at his face and said, "I don't...know, what that is?" She almost whispered it underneath her breath and it was apparent that she was embarrassed. "But o-okay," she continued. It was apparent that she was worried. The idea of Balé leaving obviously didn't thrill the tiny little princess. Her face fell and she looked away. Seeing this, the colt nudged her face up and looked at her. "I give you my word that I will be back. Soon." At this she responded, "Just...hurry?" Balé nodded and took a step back, his legs starting to tangle underneath him. Embarrassed, he turned sharply on his haunches and leapt into dusk. Nayati had laid down just inside the cave and watched after him as he took off. Balé looked after her as he cantered off but quickly looked away.

His legs were already heavy but started to drag upon the earth. There was a slight trail where his feet weren't picked up enough. Dirt spewed around him and he didn't care. The youngling's mind wandered absent-mindedly. With such a long, and exhausting, day the spotted colt could hardly think clearly.

Moving faster and faster, he approached the edge of the forest. Stopping abruptly, he saw a few choice pieces of wood he could use. There were some larger, more sustainable logs closer to the cave as well.

He got some rocks that looked like they could start the glowing mess, ones that he had seen others use before. Everything at hand he headed back to where Nayati was. He leapt off and galloped back as fast as his wobbly little legs would cary him. The heavy colt wasn't exactly the fastest of runners but he could move fairly fast when he wanted to...that is if he didn't fall over from being uncoordinated. Several times he tripped and almost fell face first in the dirt but he gathered his legs underneath himself. After each of these he slowed just a bit.

At the last stretch he trotted up to the cave, his strides very uneven and almost a bouncy walk as he neared the destination. He dropped the supplies in the cave, making sure to not get any of it wet.

He looked at Nayati, wondering what her expression would be like. He had, as he had said, made it back safely and in a timely manner. And so he began setting up the fire as he had seen before, not sure if it would be a success or not. Actually, he had little faith that he would be able to make it work at all but he could at least try.

Lining up the sticks and a little brush, he took the two rocks and set them by the clump of wood. Making sure Nayati was a ways off, he reared up and stomped on the rocks, trying to get them to rub together. If he was lucky it would only take him a short time to get it started. If he was unlucky he wouldn't be able to start it at all.

Nothing came out of it. He reared up again several times and once or twice saw a "spark" they called it. Maybe it would work. If it was in the little foal's favor it would. The odds were against him but surely there was a chance that he would get it right. By watching others create one many times he had the technique memorized though he himself hadn't ever actually made one.

He looked over at Nayati to see what she was thinking and tilted her head at her as if to ask, what do you think?

[I hope it's okay if he might build a fire, haha. I'm not so sure if he'll succeed yet but...that's not pushing any boundaries, right? lololol Again, Nayati and Balé are the cutest things ever.]

I'll take you for who you are if you'll take me for everything</style>

Thankfully he was kind enough to keep from teasing her for her lack of knowledge. Even so she was sad to see him go, even anxious. Nights were hard on her, and she didn’t want to be left alone. The previous few days where Abdullah and Romani had been gone had nearly broken the last of her courage. Bale leaving her, even if he had promised to return, made her wish to follow him on his small journey for whatever it was he needed. Body rejected the thought, reminding her that she had little energy left and certainly not enough to go parading out into the fading light with the colt. He touched her again, moving her so that she looked at him, and she smiled tremulously at his honesty. So long as she had his word, she would believe him. Watching him as he left, both worried for him and for herself. Memories couldn’t be evaded physically, and she feared that he would not return despite his promise. If that happened, could she bear to spend yet another night on her own? Did she have any bravery left to spare?

How long he was gone she didn’t know. Thin body trembled and she wished that her mane were longer, though it was already rapidly lengthening. It had been fuzzy and small for the longest time, and then out of nowhere hit a growth that made her look even smaller. However it wasn’t thick and clearly couldn’t be used as a blanket, and she wished to share her warmth with the other foal that was still away. The ground was greyish brown and dark from the slight cave, a sharp contrast to the white of her legs. Sighing softly to herself Nayati lowered her crown and curled up on the slightly damp ground. The rise of moonlight reflecting in dark rose orbs. Keeping an eye out for Bale’s return.

When he did she lifted her neck up again, smiling at his return. Why he had collected wood and rocks was behind her, but she didn’t know what fire was so she didn’t judge him. Lifting her front half to look over at him curiously, not needing to speak as she watched him move. Bringing hooves down onto the rock and creating a spark of light that made her jump in surprise and regard the rocks with a wary gaze. Would it hurt her? No, if it would hurt them then Bale wouldn’t have brought it in. Nevertheless Nayati slowly raised herself on thin legs and moved closer to Bale. Face curious, ears trained on the spotted colt. Did he need help? Sidling closer to him, not close enough to touch as she didn’t want to get in his way, but peering at the rocks with a half curious half nervous look.

She walked closer to him. He half smiled at her, a little embarrassed that this wasn't working as well as he had planned.

After a sizable time had passed he started to give up. It wasn't a big deal if he couldn't start the fire. She didn't even know what one was so it wasn't a loss to her.

He couldn't get the spark to catch so he pushed the wood away from them. A tad frustrated and extremely tired, he turned to the little spotted filly. Her ruby eyes open wide and looking after Balé expectantly.

Dropping his head, he spoke to her, "No fire for now. Sleep?" It felt kind of awkward and as he said it he realized that. Considering that in almost any situation he would have been awkward anyway, that didn't really matter.

The cave was dark and water dripped from the ceiling to the outer rim. A sort of moat was contained in the stone but it felt nice to not be alone. The company was comforting. He, slowly, folded underneath himself and lay down. Legs folded and head lowered he waited for Nayati to join him. His long cream colored tail curled around his body. In the middle of this cave it was dry. The water was mostly contained to the rim and barely any water reached them.

It was okay for tonight. Sweet Balé couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring. If today was any indicator then he would be happy.

He closed his eyes and was content. He was content.

[Sorry for the wait! University work really kept me busy and so many exams. :o ]
