Calder is a large, well-built warmblood unicorn stallion. In place of the standard unicorn horns, Calder sports a pair of antlers. He has a thick ruff of a mane – similar in appearance to a lion’s mane than that of a normal equine - that encompasses his entire neck and continues between his legs before tapering off. He also sports a lion’s tail that is long and sports hair almost all the way to the base. Calder came from a relatively cold climate and also sports feathering on his legs and a thick beard running from his chin to his cheekbones, both of which grow thicker when the air grows colder. Calder has a large marking across his back that is covered in scales. When he first entered Helovia this marking was only hair, a reminder of magic his kind once possessed centuries ago. However, the scales have since regrown since Calder has called Helovia home, something he attributes to the magic in this land reviving the innate magic that gone dormant in his kind. All of the unicorns in his herd sport scale-like markings like this as they are descended from the river unicorns that were born from the water and were once fully scaled centuries before.

At heart, Calder is a kind soul. However, he maintains a tough exterior to those he does not know well and keeps a quiet, gruff but not unkind demeanor. Calder is a brave soul and wasn’t one to ever say no to a dare during his childhood. He will fight when pushed, however he was raised in a place that valued harmony with nature over violence. Calder, like the others of his herd, values the earth and all of its creatures. However, unlike most in his herd, Calder is able to evolve and adapt when faced with change.

Calder was born into a small, close-knit herd of mountain-dwelling unicorns. This particular herd lived high up on the mountains near the banks of a stream fed by the mountain itself.

In the center of the river there was a patch of calm water that was created by a rocky formation. The water was shallow in the center – little more than knee deep. However between the bank and the smooth waters in the center the river raced past, unrelenting in its quest to escape the mountain. However if the stallions of the herd wanted to earn their names on their naming day, they would have to cross the river to receive the river stones that lay perfectly polished in the calm waters.

Calder was the first to cross in his third year. This was a precarious task and some young stallions perished on their journey from colt to stallion. Calder, however, was the first to reach the center. He dipped his head and allowed the river otters who lived in the rocky crag to secure the stone to his antler before watching to see who else would follow him across. Two others crossed the river in his third year.

The winter of his sixth year was unlike any he had ever seen. The snows grew to unbelievable heights. Trees snapped under the weight and for the first time in the herd’s history – the river froze solid. The herd suffered greatly. Their numbers fell by half that winter. And spring was not the gentle respite they were hoping for. The river tore down the mountain – swollen with melting snow. When naming day came for the colts to make the crossing, none of the colts would face the river – instead choosing exile versus being battered against the hidden rocks beneath the surface and cast down the mountain. The spirit of the herd was broken.

So Calder crossed the river once more. And in front of a collection of disbelieving faces, he struggled against the current and made it to the sanctuary in the center and received his second stone – an honor previously unheard of by his people. Even the otters regarded this feat with awe.

The morale in the herd lifted, for a time. But then the rains came.

The river began to bloat further, overrunning its banks. Grass turned to mud. Trees could no longer hold their roots and slipped from the sides of the mountain. And soon great pieces of the mountain itself began to slide from their footings and race towards the foothills. It was one such slide that would change the course of Calder’s life. When the mountain groaned and the earth no longer felt stable under his feet, he fled towards the river. He didn’t turn back; didn’t look to see if his family was following him – he simply ran, pausing only to pick up the river otters and allowing them to ride to sanctuary in the safety of his antlers.
